    I have an older Huskee 42" cut. Gears 4-6 went out recently so I pulled the upper drive belt and it was cracked all over and chunks missing. Couldnt find which size I needed so I matched it at Tractor Supply with a 5/8 x 48". After install it came off the pulleys twice soon as I put it in gear. Guessing the new one is too big? Do I need the 42" v-belt since the deck cut is 42"? Bout to go buy a few sizes smaller and do trial and error. $25 a pop.

      Hey Kevin,
      I would check this site out, you should be able to find the belt you need here with some searching: www.mtdparts.com/equipment/mtdparts/parts/part-types/belts . Please let me know if this helps.

    4 years later and this is the best TH-cam video on a drive belt replacement. Thank you for creating this

    Thank you so much. This instruction saved me. My main drive pulley center bolt actually goes into a black steel bracket with a threaded hole for center bolt. No nut on bottom.

    Thanks for getting good shots with sufficient light.
    MTD (Huskee) engineering is totally incompetent! My belt failed due to rough surface on the pulley. Check yours.
    The pulley is directly below the battery and was rusty. Instead of spending $65 for a new pulley, I cleaned it with a circular (not orbital) sander, and a stone grinder-bit in my drill.

    Tractor won't go up any inclines it just loses power I'm guessing the drive belt is slipping or the transmission belt. Does fine on flat ground though

    I Have the exact same Tractor and Just Changed BOTH Belts as you Did. Tractor Runs Fine BUt there is a Terrible Squeal from the Drive Belt. I've jacked up the mower , engaged the pedal and looked every where for a loose pulley etc, and found None. can't pinpoint where it's coming from?? What would make it Squeal so load on and off? Do all new belts do that?

    • @DavidStumph
      @DavidStumph  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, no squealing on mine. Can you tell if the belt is rubbing on anything? Does it feel like the belt is engaging all of its connection points solidly, with no slipping that you can notice? Did you use an oem belt or another manufacturer (be honest)? Can someone engage the belts while you look around closer? Other than that, I’m not sure entirely without looking and tinkering with it myself. I hope you find the cause quickly!

    • @MrDanoconnor
      @MrDanoconnor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Figured it out...I had the Belt on the wrong side of one of the Keepers and ir caused BOTH Belts to Press and Rub Togeather Very Tightly causing the squeal ...Because the Belt BROKE OFF, I never seen or knew which side of the Keeper it went on, so it was an oversight. Thanks For replying.

      MrDanoconnor no problem, glad you figured it out and it sound like without further damage. Great work! It’s very tough to show how the belts are routed so I did my best to show the diagram at the beginning and offer the best vocal descriptions to what I was showing on screen. Happy mowing!

    Is the bottom bolt reversed threads?

  • @ChucksBasix
    @ChucksBasix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, my mower has been sitting for about 2 months now. Something broke, not sure what, just got around it today and noticed one of the springs on the transmission idler pulley is gone, but that doesn't explain why the accelerator peddle just falls all the way down. I seriously hope the tab that holds both those springs didn't snap off.

    • @ChucksBasix
      @ChucksBasix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, two springs broke at the same time, one for the peddle to return, AND the one that holds tension on the tranny tensioner, go figure!

    In replacing my belts, I came across this video, sadly, mine is slightly different... You have to actually remove the bolts holding the transmission in place at the rear, as well as the bolts by where the shift lever connects to the transmission and lift the mower up about 2 inches to get the larger pulley to clear just enough to let the transmission belt slip off. There's less than 1/4th an inch between it and the mower body.
    Another thing, there is no bolt for the variable speed pulley on my version of the mower (seriously, our's appear identical till it comes to the tranny area) that's on the bottom, there's a pair of bolts on the left side right above the transmission mount bolts, and it makes it a REAL pain lining the pulley assembly back up.
    Just a few tips...
    #1 Drop the entire deck and remove it, it saves you a few headaches, and takes like, 10 seconds more to slide it off that front bar, and another 10 seconds to slide it out of under the mower. So much more room, and much more comfortable to work on. Also a great time to lube the hubs if yours are able to be greased, and to replace those belts as well if they haven't been.
    #2 If you drop the deck, and look up at the tensioner arm for the transmission belt, you will see a spring, if the belt is fully worn out, and the tensioner is maxed out, you can easily reach up, pull the spring towards the back and off of the arm. Makes replacing that belt a good bit easier!

      Hey dude, what model/serial you working with? I'm running into a similar issue with a shift lever on Huskee. Model# 14AI808H731 and Serial# 1A083H20266. Can't seem to find the Owner's manual for the 808H's. I can find "Operator's Manuals" but that doesn't give me the "how to route the belt around the shift lever" (shift lever located between the drivers legs just below the seat. I got all 4 belts replaced but that lower drive belt is rubbing on the shifter or somewhere else. It's a pain in the rear. Poor engineering IMHO.

    How do you push the mower on trailer if it doesn't run

    • @DavidStumph
      @DavidStumph  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as there are no other issues, if the mower is placed into neutral and the parking break disengaged by pressing and releasing the brake pedal, the mower should move freely forward and backwards. If you find this is not the case, something else is amiss and warrants further investigation.

    • @michaeljeter8838
      @michaeljeter8838 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidStumph thanks and that's what I was thinking but while in neutral it acts as if it is in gear. I didn't know what is causing this. I'm stumped.

    • @terryzerr1072
      @terryzerr1072 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      check your brakes... could be the pins may be needing cleaning.... just put mower in neutral & try moving mower front & backwards... if your suree your in neutral... then more likely it is a brake issue... first try adjusting the brakes with the adjusting nut... (see owners manual)… hope this helps...

    My top pulley is stuck. Can't get it off. Tried a puller but can't get it up there because of those damn plates around the pulley. What damn engineer came up with this design... UGH
