It is about alchemy ( and album title is "Alchemy index" - dough!!! :) ). Lion represents raw energy of the nature, trying to "break in", to get to sleepy, undefined spirit. Since the wolf's teeth are red, lion is most probably green (these colors usually interfere with each other in alchemy). Usually, wolf is a symbol of man's free spirit ( or animal nature), and song describes so called "melting process"', where everything must be ripped out of man's spirit in order to clear redefine it..
Hmm i like your view of the Lyrics. I see them as an Unholy alliance, or an unknown enemies like a spy. You know the Lion is the enemy, but not the wolf (Mocking man's best friend) So when you let you guard down with the wolf, and he betray you. because in the end they are both apex predators and want to feed. it can also be seen as the known beasts around us in life and the beast inside all, both hungry and both waiting to eat us. i think of the quote "strange times make for stranger bedfellows"
@@thepsychoticwizard1151 Lion is temptation. Wolf is man's carnal nature. The 'you' is man's soul. When a man's carnal desires let temptation in, they rip his soul to pieces.
@thejockeykid882 I read a comment a while ago on another video that I think explains it quite well. This is what the person wrote: "This song is a metaphor. The wolf is temptation and the lion is the devil. The wolf lets the lion in at the end to rip open your flesh. They both want the same thing in the end which mean your soul. This is an adult lullaby meaning be careful who you let in your life," and I'd like to add to be mindful of your own weaknesses. I hope that helps!
I myself have struggled with this recently, But God is good, He is protecting my loved ones and myself I praise Christ the conqueror of evil and lover/healer of people
This is an amazing song! Beautiful tune, very relaxing. It's also perfect music for when I'm writing, as my current project is about a group of criminals whose codenames are the names of the animals from the Reynard fables. The three main characters are Reynard the Fox, Isengrim the Wolf and Noble the Lion. This is literally Reynard' s theme song, I swear. X
Whatever the meaning is behind this song. Its beautiful no matter. I love this song its so mythical and mystical. Reminds me of the old fairy tales ive been told... Love you Thrice!
To me personally, the wolf in your bed mocking man's best friend is the haunting memory of someone close to you who you loved hurting you in a terribly impactful way that you see people at your door asking you to "open up" as the lion. The wolf's teeth are red from what has already happened and the lion's claws are sharpened for war as what is to come if that door opens. Of course, the door opens and "the real fun begins" as what comes through that door rips you apart just as you are tearing yourself apart all the time. The wolf "cleans up the mess" as in time the pain dulls (but never leaves) and you move on, or at least try to. Then it all starts all over again.
i personally have always taken the song as this: The Wolf represents your best friend, The Lion represents your worst enemy. Your Bed represents your head/mind. Outside Your Door represents your enemy not being able to know your secrets. The Wolf betrays you and tells your enemy, basically letting him into your bed too. And because The Wolf did this, The Lion and The Wolf rip your apart emotionally and make it so you break and never kill your trust for everyone and everything. :)
That is great. I fit this song right into the dynamic of my favorite TV show. Sons of Anarchy. A character (Gemma) had an affair with her husbands (John's) best friend (Clay) , and together, they kill him (john). Of course that is all in the back story but still. This is AMAZING.
@leukocyteofdoom That's a very literal interpretation though. It would be like saying Daedalus was simply telling the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, when really (in my opinion), it's more about drawing parallels between the story and parenting today. With Thrice, there is almost always a deeper meaning behind what are seemingly the most straightforward songs.
@LittleShyell actually imho, the wolf's in your head(thus in your bed, close) and the lion is temptation. wolfy here is poising as a dog, "man's best friend", waiting for the chance to betray the person i.e. "the wolf lets him(the lion) in". cause the wolf can't "kill" the person by itself, so it has to lay low, poise as a dog, and wait for the lion(temptation) to finish the person off. in the end, the lion gets dibs, but the wolf does get to eat what was left, "the wolf cleans up the mess".
The Wolf is what is hide inside your unconscious mind , inside your soul ..... The Lion is what is present in your conscious mind , is your Ego what You think You are.... both are the builders of your life ....

Saving Simon. “The Wolf cleans up the mess.”Jace giving Simon his blood.
@beadlep1 Oh, that's really interesting! I still need to get around to reading Dante's Inferno, but my need-to-read list is just so long, haha. Anyways, thanks!

Alot of people dont seem too get this song...The Lion is outside threats to your society such as terrorists for example. The Wolf is your own police force/military. The point of the song is too illustrate that in the end both will serve the needs of there families before yours.
It reminds me of The Mortal Instruments. ( Clary, Jace and Simon) *Spoiler for City Of Bones to City of Glass* The Lion is Jace and the Wolf is Simon. "Claws sharpened for war." Jace literally confessed that to relieve himself of stress, he fought things. "The wolf's teeth are red." Simon is a vampire. "And what a monstrous sight he makes, mocking man's best friend (Wolf)" At one point, Jace DID.... strongly despise Simon. "Both the Wolf and the Lion crave, the same thing in the end." Clary.
I know this song has been discussed to death, it seems, in the comments, but let me give it a shot. To me, this song represents vices, and how a little bit is "alright" (The Wolf; Example: drinking every now and then, socially) but some people become consumed by them because they think "Well, if a little isn't hurting me, going a little deeper isn't going to be so bad, right?" So, then enters the Lion (Drinking to excess, being drunk and throwing caution to the wind). The lion ruins your life, financially, relationships, job, etc. The "wolf cleans up the mess" part to me is yourself justifying it by relating it to whatever got you hooked in the first place. Rationalizing it as a common place thing and denying it ever affected you as much as it did. Feels like it goes along the same vein of "Digging My Own Grave" by Thrice in that regard. It would make sense to some degree, no?
@LittleShyell speaking of parallels, there's the parallel between a wolf and a dog in the song, the wolf being something familiar(similar to a dog) yet malicious. i believe this song is quite literal though? i mean, the wolf and the lion -literally- devour the person in the end and that's it. other than that, there are more than one fitting scenarios, seen as there can be more than one interpretations on what both beasts represent. btw i never was fond of greek mythology...
physical being is literally torn apart, man dies in order to be reborn with "purified" spirit, released of all negative influence. Just google out for something like: "green lion in alchemy"... And sorry for my bad english. :))))
@LittleShyell Really tha way I look at it, tha wolf could represent just about anything negative in your life and tha Lion being tha devil. Whether tha wolf is tha wrong type of people, drugs, fears or any number of things that in tha end could destroy you.
@Rubyeke I personally like this metaphor better. -not much of a religious person- But I really just love the song because it's so pretty. And I like it for what it is, the actual song. The lyrics are gorgeous and talking of a lullaby about the lion and the wolf. To me personally I always thought little red riding hood when they talk about the wolf in the bed.
Wolf is anger, the lion is the devil, and the anger acts as our friend 'the wolf mocks man's best friend'. Eventually we get to angry, and the anger let's the devil into our hearts to kill us.
People are theorizing... Keep me away... Okay but I think the wolf represents life and the lion represents death. The wolf is sort of tired of holding onto you, and in the end they both want you with the lion. So I'll explain. When it says the wolf lets him in, life is letting death take hold, explaining the gruesome-ish line. Then the lion takes his fill, a.k.a. the soul, which is the biggest part of a human, and then the wolf cleans up the rest, a.k.a. letting the body decompose and clean. So there's my take on it. Probably wrong but...
could this song represent two sides of you. the wolf is the part of you that is acknowledge the most or the side that your more comfortable with . the lion is the other side of you that is more dark angry or more insane. you try to separate them as long as possible but then when the wolf let's the lion in it tears you apart and you can't help. but let it. when the deed is done and your sane or normal again your left to deal with the consequences of your other side
the wolf represents the wild instincts of dog .... ?!?!?! kinda like the story if the scorpion and the from....in that it coulds be dealing with the nature of nature....
@LittleShyell seems like it could have a lot of different meaning to a lot of people just how you persive it like as if it is two men going for the same girl it is like most of there other stuff music means different things to different people
Not to like condescend, as my opinion is just my own (though I hope someone may agree). I feel like the Wolf is...well us. People in general. The Lion can be the devil, or sin, or death even. But just something horrible and bad. I think that Sin / Violence / Evil nature and Desire fit it the best. It say's mocking man's best friend; as in dogs. Dog's are suppose to be good, the good side of human nature, while the wolf is the bad, the bad side of humanity.
Well, scripture describes the devil searching for souls as a lion searches for its prey. In many ways the lion may appear majestic, gracefull and everything desirable, just like the devil,....we don't realize the beast within until the beast pounces and devours it's prey. The wolf seems to represent the sin that eventually leads you to the lion (devil)
Though- after listening to it several more times, I think this could also be linked to religion. Not attacking people, but i mean in a sense of destructive nature that Religion has brought to mankind throughout history. Just several thoughts.
The lion is the devil. The wolf represents false prophets, teachers, and any "christian" who leads you astray. The whole point is that the lion can not get to you unless the wolf betrays you. So figure out who the wolves are in your life and distance yourself from them. Do not be deceived by false doctrine.
