I remember when the first ceramic bearings came out years ago. Around here the surf casting boys were all a buzz. No matter what test ya use Carl, the upside is so great that you can't go wrong in my book. They are lighter, and noisey and worth it for sure, especially if your reels are used in saltwater and are not Super Daiwa Mag sealed, it's the other best alternative. Not that you are fishing the acid environment, as I am. I'd like to switch out all mine to ceramics......"maybe even my Blinged -Out Zillions, just so they are 100% the Ultimates, but then I need the pin removal tool too! "Pricey". Right now, my Blinged-Out Zillions will pay out line off the spools with just the weight of a mono leader and a swivel!!!!!!!! Gawd how I love those reels. Thanks to YOU. Keep it real Brother! If ya ever go on vacation to Florida. Please call me. I'll take ya fishing and we'll do a Bass Guy gets SALTY video.
Excellent question. I had wondered the same thing. Because otherwise...why bother getting them, right? They in fact do make a difference. The stock bearings in the Chronarch are rather good, so its not a huge difference. But it is certainly noticeable and appreciable.
I put the boca bearings in my Abu inshore and I’m pretty happy with the results. I have heard on the web that you can remove the orange seals and notice an increase in performance.
Also, keep in mind that reels come stock overgreased. After heavy use for a few months, clean out all the grease where they shouldn't be. Or else they get into your bearings and spool and your reel will start making noise and perform like garbage. I've had a couple very good deals on reels from people who think its broken.
After 2 yrs of heavy use with my curadoe7, I finally cleaned it cuz it became absolutely horrible, and I was able to achieve 40s average free spool-100% fully spooled with mono. After a week of salmon fishing, I got 17s average free spool-85% spooled. MAINTENANCE is the key, hybrid ceramic makes a little difference for casting but is defenitely worth it for durability. ABEC 7 is an overkill, spools can't generate the speed that ABEC 7 can handle.
This is a crazy upgrade. Those bearings are pure speed. I just picked up a 201e6 yesterday and it casts even better than my Gen 3 Revos. How much is the bearing kit for the Chronarch?
Definitely a lemon. But don't let that put you off to Shimano products. I have heard the same stories about the other major brands. All products, fishing or otherwise, have a certain percentage that will fail soon after purchase. Some part in there was probably a hair out of spec or cut a little out of alignment. The good part if that the one they send back to you will definitely be tested for functionality before leaving.
do you still upgrade you bearings, and do you think it is worth it? fully understanding that if you do still upgrade you think its worth it, and if you don't, you dont think so.
R Squared Fishing I've upgraded nearly all of my bait casters with boca orange seal bearings. If you have the extra money to spend it is absolutely worth it. To note there are also other high end bearing manufacturers to look into like ZPI.
What do you Think? Upgrade my Chronarch or buy a Shimano Metanium Can't Shimano Metanium be Upgrade also I need a long casting distance baitcasting reels. i mean a long long casting distance Big thanks
Upgrade the Chronarch unless you have the money to burn. The Metanium isn't going to be 10X the reel the Chronarch is, but that's what you'll pay getting the Metanium as opposed to the bearings for the Chronarch.
Just nit picking really, but it's not quite as fair a test as you might think. Reason being, the stock bearings are lubricated (oiled), the ceramic hybrids are not (dry). For a fair comparison both would need to be lubricated with the same viscosity oil and then timed. The resulting spin times will be similar with the hybrid just edging it. One last thing to note, the higher the ABEC rating, the more cleaning maintenance is required to keep the bearings operating at their optimum speed due to the tight tolerances. This is more so with hybrids because the bearing balls are much lighter than stainless steel meaning any build up inside the bearing will drastically reduce it's running performance. Hope this helps.
Don't know what you are doing. Hear your comment on method, but you are really stuffing up there someway. Curado with standard bearings 9 seconds, not too different from your spin, Orange seal bearings first spin 2min 7.84 seconds. I suspect you have contact in the shaft or have not taken ALL the grease and oil out of your spool system. Also did a Citica and that gets up to 2min 15 seconds time and time again so its not a one off 'fluke' Good luck - Andrew
I must have gotten a lemon, my Chronarch went back to Irvine for repair in less than a week. It is, without question the worst performing reel I have ever purchased. I tried this spin test in free spool and it only spins for 3 seconds. It sounds like it came out of a sand box and maximum casting distance is about 60 feet.

Hey Mike....yes, being that the ceramics are meant to be run dry (no oil), they remain noisy.

You could of done the test with the cast control know completely taken off right? Still it's a rad mod. Cheers!

Lubrication is not good for ceramic bearings.
I just started using a bait casting reel and i was woundering the web site where u order ur bearings from
oluna1981 www.bocabearings.com/
What line is that
nice demo
