I agree, take away the fear of failure and you can focus on success. I advise people to rehearse the answers to questions they may be asked. Be positive and prepare more then the next person.

That's good advice. I had the same experience. The mere fact that you prepared a lot takes the nervousness out of you. Because you have repeated the answers and know you will be talking fluently and with ease. That's the most you can do.

The key is to ignore reality. Doesn't matter what you say or don't say. You have to be in a good mood, you have to FEEL GOOD. Picture yourself with a sizable bank account, nice car & house. You

Your advice is spot on. I wrote down some common interview questions and answered them:
    1) What is your experience and how will it contribute to this role?
    2) Why should we hire you?
These questions are always asked in one form or another. I have a second interview next week 🙏🏼🙏🏼

This helps it’s true preparation is key... I successfully defended my dissertation because of preparation... a week before graduation I was laid off. I haven’t been interviewing in some time but I reached back on the preparation I did for the defense and related to a job it helped... WRITE DOWN REHEARSE and remember they are human like you just pray for the RIGHT JOB not A JOB ✌🏽 thanks for the reminders

Don, this video was absolutely wonderful. I'm getting ready for an interview and I had casually assumed I would be able to just recall all the experiences I had at a previous job. While sitting down and trying to recall those things, I was amazed at how foggy some of those memories had become. Now that I've recalled them and written them down I feel like I did them yesterday. Also, you're very pleasant to listen to. You remind of my childhood doctor who used to make me feel very relaxed. Thank you!!

  • @Apk24dc5
    @Apk24dc5 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I had an interview couple weeks ago, and I felt that I wasn’t able to answer the questions like how I wanted to because my nerve got the best of me and I usually don’t get nervous when I talk to people. I just felt that I panicked on questions and I started pulling random scenarios and try to put it all together on the spot, even though, I had rehearsed my answers in what I wanted to say. (Till this day when I think about it, I face palm myself ) I felt that the interview did not go as well as planned but I did receive a strong lesson from it. Confidence is key, having an optimistic mind will definitely help. Being prepared as to what to say is crucial, but the most important part is to learn how to be comfortable in the situation that you’re in, which will allow you to be able to be in control of your actions and help you deliver those answers properly and promptly. The way that I feel like I had failed was that I had panicked and did not allow myself to give myself enough time to think of how I could approach the question and answer it properly.

I loath interviewing with a mask on because I feel like all they are looking at are my wondering eyes. The only way to ease nerves is to not want the job, meaning you have a job already or have another job in the bag. If you're unemployed & bill collector is buzzing in, it's almost impossible to stay positive.

I took a whole week to prepare my 4 pages response to all possible behavioural questions before I went to interview with employer A, and I walked out of their office with 99% confidence, yet the other guy got the job. A few days later I went to another interview at employer B and thought my performance was terrible, I couldn't even give a complete answer, let alone good one, to "your ability to think on your feet", and to my surprise they gave me the job......

For the first interview, its hard to know, because we don't know who the other person was, and how their interview was. They could have been the boss's nephew. So shrug that one off. For the second one? I think sometimes nervousness can HELP. If the interviewer, or the boss, is secretly concerned about their ability to be the leader.....they may like some nervousness, and know that you are not too confident to take advice, or learn from them.

THANK YOU! I often have this very problem and it boggled my mind how to resolve it. The only times I'm not a nervous mess is when it's a more casual, conversational style interview. But you always need to be prepared for the traditional questions and interview style. I am already writing down stories from my past work history stored in my long term memory. I'm going to see how this works for my interview tomorrow. And will continue watching your videos!

Thinking back to the past experiences you did with your colleagues, friends - a time when you were comfortable, you feel like yourself, you were the boss, you were doing what you do/ doing the very best... you start talking your stories and experiences.
Best Way to do this: Start writing down your experiences, write down all the details, break in phases. Rewriting everything you worked on, transferring long-term experiences into short-term memory, which you could talk about things fast and without a lot of thought.
Think of the good times and fun you had on those projects, which makes you relaxed and they will see the real you.
Start with 1 project, then work on another 2-3 that is relevant to the position (competencies, skills), rewrite and reread them before the interview, and continually reinforce past experience into short-term memory. Then the interview is going to be a lot more easy, you will talk with smile and will going to be yourself.
This will eliminate brain freeze (totally) if you rewrite all your past experiences in detail, and go through again and you will have more to fill the blanks. Then you will be unstoppable and on your best game during the interview and able to answer any questions - you already thought about that ahead of time. That's a biggest reason people fail in the interview - they don't think of those ahead of time, during the interview your nerves are high, so it won't work.
Think about all you plan to talk during the interview (Not sure what they will ask? Go though the job description and see what they are looking for, and start thinking about the experiences and relate to them)

I used to be super nervous in interviews. Then I had the mentality. I didn't have the job to begin with. What's the worst that can happen? I won't get the job??? That's not a terrible outcome because I never had that job anyways. When I got through to that mentality of having nothing to lose, I became extremely natural in every interview.
Now, I understand that if you're unemployed and strained for cash, that mentality might not work. I was laid off Oct 2020 and tried my best to think positively. "Hey what's the worst that can happen in this interview? I don't get the job. But I really didn't lose anything". With that mentality, I felt natural in every interview and got 5 job offers in late Oct 2020, a mere 2 weeks after being laid off.

Everything is not clear cut and not enough time to explain it all . All I know is watching these videos helped me get through my first interview and I landed the job . I will continue to watch as I move up in the company .

The hirevue was strange not personal, only had 3 or 4 video recorded questions and a few written answer question. my job doesn’t consist of being on a computer a lot besides for repair information or documenting service or technology like that but I am young enough to still “get it” haha. Thanks Don for the tips. I’ll remember this one for an interview. Hopefully my solid back ground sells some of what they need as it’s hiring for the same job I’ve done the past 11 years for a highly regarded company (current employer)

I once had an interview that went horribly in every way. he thought I was late bc the email said one time but I confirmed a different time with the secretary due to my work schedule. so he thought I was late, he was unimpressed, I got so nervous it was just a cringe interview. then when I left I had a parking ticket waiting for me on top of not getting the job. I learned a lot from that experience though 🙌🏼

Don, thank you very much for the tips. This is great, great, great! Can you please give me one advice? My native language is Serbian, and I am having an interview, video interview, in English and it is much harder for me. Your videos are great for me. Writing down my answers really makes me more comfortable. Since I'm a non-native speaker should I make it simple or should I use fancy phrases? Is it more important how I sound or what I'm going to say? How to slow down because sometimes I want to say some many things and speak too fast because I don't want to forget it. Naturally I think both Serbian and English while I speak. When I speak more than 10 minutes I am relaxed. Thank you very much!

@@DonGeorgevich Thanks man I feel like I tanked it honestly and the interviewer could tell, but now I know what questions I need to work on since I usually start strong at the beginning with why I want to work for them, its just after that when I start to argue with myself internally about what I should share next

I've been a robot for years and I'm petrified of the next interviews I'll be having, which will be soon. I'm doing a job I never really chose, but ended up doing. Go in, do it, go home, same shit different day, all blurring into one. I'm looking to get my CV together for external jobs as well back in my field of choice, but haven't done that for years and previous job in that area was a shitshow.

The problem is when the interview is short and fast, when that person doesn't have a time and you can sense that and you can't do much about it. Im a designer and im not very good with the interview thing.

I think this is not 100%, to never ever show any nervousness. Being an older person, with much younger interviewers, much younger bosses, they are often secretly concerned, that I won't take direction, that I will be too bossy. So in SOME cases, showing a little nervousness is good. You are allowing that the interviewer is the boss.
