New act idea: the wardrobe person runs underneath you two on the sway pole, frantically cutting loose threads as you swing back and forth. It has everything: danger! Sewing! Sharp blades! 😂😂

As someone who grew up onstage, I’m feeling the adrenaline on the wardrobe repair! Working as a dancer in an outdoor drama one summer, the entire skirt came off my bodice during a performance.

Back when my mother had a dance troupe, we had a performance in which one of the dancers ripped her tights and the only pair available was from a dancer who performed just before her and immediately after her.
So we quick changed the tights off one dancer on to the other just inside the wings. And did it again, immediately after.
Afterwards, both girls said that putting on warm tights was the most disgusting feeling, ever.
Needless to say, after that, we always packed a couple of extra tights.
Happy to hear you made your entrance!
I was really feeling that story!!😱

😂 totally understand that one I was in a play where there were three different sisters as characters played by three different actresses of three different sizes. Part of the twist was that the family was poor and wanted to marry their daughters off but could only afford one dress to show them off to suitors. So we each had to change into the dress after somebody else had been sweating into it!

Hey Shannon, best emergency embroidery hoop I figured out is the top of any plastic food container with a snap on lid, round or square ,doesn't matter! Just cut the snap together part of the lid and bottom off ,trim carefully or wrap with tape so no sharp edges. The 2 edges function just like an embroider hoop! And you get to eat whatever was in it! Haha! Merry wishes to all,🎉

People in the performing arts field are amazing and a little bit magical and you and your seamstress just proved it. I think the wardrobe department in theater is underappreciated by outsiders but very appreciated by those who are in it daily. I was in theater in junior high and high school, and as you know at that stage generally the actors have to finagle the costumes with help from random moms or other students.

  • @theplussizecostumer
    @theplussizecostumer ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh, jeeze! I feel for the wardrobe person. Been there more times than I can count. The first time something like that happen was when I was in high school. We were doing a children's show and at the beginning of the play one of the actors was supposed to go out in front of the curtain and do a prologue. In rehearsals I never really paid attention because I was busy working on costumes. So opening night, everyone is backstage waiting for the prologue to be finished so we can start the play when I hear the person presenting the prologue say that the main villain had a big black eyepatch. No one said anything about an eyepatch when we were making the costumes. I think it was a classic "I thought you knew" moment. So I ran back to where we had some black scrap fabric, found a piece that would work, trimmed it up to a vaguely eyepatch shape, found some 1/2 inch gold braid, found needle and thread, sewed the fabric onto the braid while running to the wing where the villain was waiting, and tied it on his head with just 5 seconds to spare. Everyone said I saved the show. I don't know about that. All I know is that when doing a children's show, if the kids are told something significant about a character and it's not there, they WILL notice.

What a stressful 10 minutes that must have been! Credits to the wardrobe person for not throwing her machine through a window as well at that point...
Also I have a question about Phil, if you're willing to answer more personal questions. I'm super curious to know how long you two have been working together, and if you are just work partners or life partners as well?

Thanks for the book suggestion. I am obsessed with my library’s Libby app. It’s an audiobook app and every time I borrow a book (for free) my library gets the credit which helps with their funding. ‘Hooked’ was not available but ‘Wendy, darling was. There is another ‘Hooked’ by Emily McIntire which seems quite dark but I did borrow it. The best part of audiobooks is I can have someone read me a story while I sew. I never have to choose between my two favorite activities.

Just wanted to say how much I’m enjoying your Vlogmas videos. They are so chill and refreshing, it’s a great break in the hustle and bustle of the season. It’s a perfect mix of crafting, book reviews, travel vlog, circus, and personal stories. I shouldn’t laugh, but I absolutely did, at the “cheeky” pants issue. I was really surprised that you don’t have a backup pair of performance pants, given how rigorous the show is, number of shows in close succession, and all the travel. It doesn’t leave a huge amount for cleaning and repairs.
The chicken scratch sample looked great and I’m excited to see the end results, along with the crazy quilt stocking.

Omgosh! Yhat was one heck of a wardrobe malfunction 😂😂 After my car accident i took up belly dancing and during a performance I started out on my knees. When my music que came up i grabbed my veil and went to get up only to discover that I was on my skirt and had forgotten to pin it to my belt😱😳 Fortunately no one saw anything because my veil was in the way and my skirt had an elastic waist band and it snapped back into place when I got off my skirt. All the other dancers who were back stage later shared their embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions with me afterwards and made me feel a lot better about myself. One girl even shimmied her belt off and kept dancing. It takes dedication to be a performer of any sort. You never know whats going to happen when a eyes are on you. 😉
Like I said before I've heard good things about Hooked but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. Now that vests are done and all I can spend some time on reading. It may be a little while before i get to it though. I have a friend who went out and bought some Wheel of Time books and wants to read them together. Its been a long time since I read through the series. I don't think I ever finished becuase Robert Jordan died before he finished the seires. I think I read through the last one he wrote. So we will see. 📖 📚
I actually have plans to finally start my cotehardie today. I need to do some prep work today and do measurements and hopefully get a mockup done. If not I have some time to get it done. It's just something that i have been wanting to make for about a month now. Just something for some casual history bounding. 🪡 Anyway good luck with the pants situation. I'm sure you will figure it out. Its going to be an adventure one way or another. 😁

3:08 The knit stitch: it looks kinda like a “stem/woven stem” stitch without the yearning lace effect and garter stitch as the background. The slanted looking knit stitches woof be done with passed-over slipped stitches on the RS, but I’m just guessing.

Aside from the crazy costume fix...a great story by the way :) I'm curious about what type of pants you need for the costume....like wouldn't a pair of thick leggings from Old Navy work? I'm sure I'm missing something but if they need to be a tight, smooth knit it seems like the emergency fix of just buying something rather than trying to sew in a difficult environment would be easier. As much as I love learning about sewing in difficult places with limited supplies....the stress of this makes me anxious for you :) Also...you've motivated me to not only add the books (both of them) to my Hoopla list, but I checked out two books on knitting and embroidery so I can learn how to do such relaxing things....just loving that you've invited us all to join you on tour! I'd love to know more about your circus associations too....can you include mini interviews of some of the other performers. I'm always interested in knowing how people came to be where they are and doing what they do.

Another good emergency embroidery hoop involves a tape roll and an elastic band. Or just the tape roll and some of the tape I guess, but I've never tried that option. In case anything goes wrong with your hoop. Though sounds like you might have to focus on making pants instead now. Good luck!

Depending o the embroidery project, GET A SMALL SIZE EMBROIDERY HOOP cause I bought a relatively large diameter hoop around a foot wide but I found it too unwieldy for embroidering small monograms, tiny flowers etc so I just never used it, getting a smaller hoop that you just move around the fabric is much better for me but since your embroidery covers a larger area your experience might be different and you might actually prefer a larger hoop, you know what, if you can just buy two hoops and try them out.

The the embroidery on gingham @ 6:30 reminded me of sashiko. (A type of Japanese needlework, pronounced sah-shko if you want to get technical.) Wondered if you'd ever heard of it? If not I thought it might be something you'd be interested in trying (or at least learning about). It's much like embroidery, with its own specific stitch patterns, and (from what I've seen) very geometric.

Alternating diagonals is a stitch pattern you can find online. It's more angular and basically diamonds instead of leaf patterns. Patten 107 from "250 Japanese Knitting Stitches" looks like a much lower resolution than your version, but has the curving stitches that the Alternating Diagonals lacks.

Oh no, not the pants! Glad you made your cue but also, aaaahhhhh! Claps for amazing wardrobe, I hope their machine gets sorted! Maybe have some leggings on hand for backups? The embroidery samples look good! 💜

One of my charity shop purchases today was a gingham apron for £1. At that price it was not worth me attempting to make one, anyway I plan on doing some chicken scratch embroidery on it.

I've been teaching myself to sew this year (with great success!), & among my thrifted fabric is a lovely green & white gingham... Sheet? Curtain? (Need to look again) that I want to make a some sort of dress out of. & watching your Vlogmas escapades, now I want to try chicken scratch embroidery on it too, lol!
Thank you for sharing! Merry Christmas to you!

Sounds like a MAD rush you must have been so happy to get back on that stage *just* in time! Good luck making yourself a new pair on tour😬
That sweaer looks so cosy and pretty, what a lucky find in a random goodwill :)

I'm glad you didn't choose the Patrick Rothfuss book. I have a book by him, which I have finally given up on. It's interminable.
That sequin set is from Dollar Tree. It came in four different color ranges. I have them all, lol.
I bought that pattern back in 1980! If you do ever make any of the other garments, be aware that the armscye is very high and small. Also, the pants are very close fitting.

Now you know why I refused the computerized sewing machines. I just looked at a supplier of parts for the 1222E (they had zipper feet, bobbins 👍) and even almost 40 years later this machine (refurbished) is priced over $1000. I couldn't believe that!
IF those items arrive, I will post the name I had of the supplier.
I did costuming, and emergency repairs usually used fusible or patching such as you had. Making pants on the move will be interesting.
    Onward! 🇨🇦

I got my parts today. "Sewing Parts Online" was the company in Dickson Tennessee.
Bobbins are correct, got 2 zipper feet. Spent $20 or so.

I could see you on Broadway playing Peter Pan. Your acrobatic skills and upbeat voice would be a perfect casting. Have you ever done any acting? Your video making and camera expertise goes along also. Just wandering.

Exciting times! I used to do costuming when my daughter was in figure skating. I remember hand stitching a hole closed in over-the-skate tights for one of the other skaters right before they were going on for a group number. She had put a hole in it during the warmup. 🙂
