  • @dangitnicky
    @dangitnicky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +225

    10:00 Normalizing failure is why I adore engineering/maker TH-camrs.
    My close family member works in education and they noticed the fear of failure is rampant among young people today. Making mistakes and failure has become less common in their childhoods thanks to the access to essentially any answer to any question, grade inflation in many schools, participation medals and generally higher expectations & standards they feel like they need to measure up to thanks to social media. TH-camrs now sharing their failures in their content feels like a good step towards undoing the harm caused by picture perfect Instagram influencers and other flawless study-tubers.

    • @Noah-lj2sg
      @Noah-lj2sg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      kinda a weird take. There is grade inflation, but that's partially since more people are staying in school and getting better educations. I wouldn't say young kids AREN'T making mistakes: It's simply a different environment.

    • @dangitnicky
      @dangitnicky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Noah-lj2sg Well not really, kids staying in school getting better educations aren't actually related to grade inflation. Grades would stay the same as curriculums change and courses adapt for the times. What is required for the kids to learn has changed a lot within the past ten years. Regardless, there are tools to mathematically curve grades such that assessment matches to what existed back in the day. There's systemic problems in NA education right now that are setting up students for failure as the universities haven't adapted this change yet.
      With covid and the stay at home schooling, grades have gone up as most school districts have adopted a laxer policy on grading. In my country, most of the school boards adopted a "no late" policy where all summative assessments can be handed in within a day before the course is ending. This policy and many others are still in place even though we're back to in-person learning. It's virtually impossible to mark kids fairly when most the class hands in work right before report cards are due.
      Then there are other policies where students can do a grade/course recovery program where they can retry previous tests/exams until they get a mark they're happy with. It's a problem that is creeping up in NA schools, there aren't any mathematical tools that exists that can curve grades like that.
      Other aspects of life aren't as lax so when students get their first failing grade, or they didn't get into their first choice highly ranked school they find themselves more devastated compared to other generations who didn't have that issue. If they get a grade that is less than perfect (or at minimum, what they deem acceptable) it causes problems with the parents.
      In the name of accessibility they make schooling failure-proof, but that doesn't translate at all when they move onto college or into the private sector, where failure is rampant and is to be expected.

  • @Fixthisbuildthat

    Love seeing Mark on the channel, he's the ultimate combination of science, engineering, learning and fun. Going even deeper into the "Maker" spacer it would be great to see Colin Furze on the show. He's making some big moves with a big new facility instead of his tiny backyard shop. I think there's a great story in there about growth, authenticity, and how he's approaching that transition with his audience.

    16:45 It’s so interesting to hear Mark say, “This isn’t what Mark Rober does.” It’s wild to hear him think about himself like a brand with a reputation, and how he avoids actions that betray that brand, even if it’s something as good as giving away money

    6:45 is one of the most interesting parts of the video for me. Super interesting.
