Debunking Critical Race Theory Myths

  • “Critical race theory” has been called “anti-white” and “not American.” Protests against teaching critical race theory have rallied conservative parents in places like Loudoun County, Virginia. Conservative politicians have already banned the topic from being taught in several states.
    But why is this legal body of work causing so much controversy? And is it even warranted?

      Critical thinking is defined through the enlightenment rationalism and logic. Critical Theory is defined through neo-marxism coupled with applied postmodernism which adjudicates treatment based on intersectional hierarchies of immutable identity treats. Equity is the antithesis of equality. The word critical and theory hold different definitions from how they are described traditionally and shouldn't be confused for each other.

    The intersectionality wars( Critical Race Theory )
    When Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term 30 years ago, it was a relatively obscure legal concept. Then it went viral.
    How the right started worrying about critical race theory and learned to fear intersectionality
    Beginning in 2015 and escalating ever since the conservative response to intersectionality has ranged from mild amusement to outright horror. In 2017, writer Andrew Sullivan argued that intersectionality was a religion of sorts: In his view, intersectionality “posits a classic orthodoxy through which all of the human experience is explained - and through which all speech must be filtered. Its version of original sin is the power of some identity groups over others. To overcome this sin, you need first to confess, i.e., ‘check your privilege,’ and subsequently live your life and order your thoughts in a way that keeps this sin at bay.”
    When you talk to conservatives about the term itself, however, they’re more measured. They say the concept of intersectionality - the idea that people experience discrimination differently depending on their overlapping identities - isn’t the problem. Because, as David French, a writer for National Review who described intersectionality as “the dangerous faith” in 2018, told me, the idea is more or less indisputable.
    “An African American man is going to experience the world differently than an African American woman,” French told me. “Somebody who is LGBT is going to experience the world differently than somebody who’s straight. Somebody who’s LGBT and African American is going to experience the world differently than somebody who’s LGBT and Latina. It’s sort of this commonsense notion that different categories of people have different kinds of experience.”
    What many conservatives object to is not the term but its application on college campuses and beyond. Conservatives believe that it could be (or is being) used against them, making them the victims, in a sense, of a new form of overlapping oppression. To them, intersectionality isn’t just describing a hierarchy of oppression but, in practice, an inversion of it, such that being a white straight cisgender man is made anathema.
    “Where the fight begins,” French said, “is when intersectionality moves from descriptive to prescriptive.” It is as if intersectionality were a language with which conservatives had no real problem until it was spoken.
    In a 2018 clip for Prager University, an online platform for conservative educational videos, pundit Ben Shapiro described intersectionality as “a form of identity politics in which the value of your opinion depends on how many victim groups you belong to. At the bottom of the totem pole is the person everybody loves to hate: the straight white male.” At the end of the video, Shapiro concludes, “But what do I know? I’m just a straight white male.”
    Intersectionality is so stupid
    - Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) February 19, 2018
    In an interview, Shapiro gave me a definition of intersectionality that seemed far afield from Crenshaw’s understanding of her own theory. “I would define intersectionality as, at least the way that I’ve seen it manifest on college campuses, and in a lot of the political left, as a hierarchy of victimhood in which people are considered members of a victim class by virtue of membership in a particular group, and at the intersection of various groups lies the ascent on the hierarchy.”
    And in that new “hierarchy of victimhood,” Shapiro told me, white men would be at the bottom. “In other words, if you are a woman, then you are more victimized than a man, and if you are black, then you’re more victimized than if you were white. If you’re a black woman, you are more victimized than if you are a black man.”
    I had sent Shapiro Crenshaw’s 1989 paper prior to our conversation. The paper, Shapiro said, “seems relatively unobjectionable.” He just didn’t think it was particularly relevant. “I first started hearing about this theory in the context of a lot of the discussions on campus, the ‘check your privilege’ discussions. That was the first place that I came across it, and that’s honestly the place that most people first came across it in the public eye.”
    “I call that the anti-intersectionality intersectionality”
    Crenshaw said conservative criticisms of intersectionality weren’t really aimed at the theory. If they were, and not largely focused on whom intersectionality would benefit or burden, conservatives wouldn’t use their own identities as part of their critiques. (Shapiro’s tongue-in-cheek disclaimer of “I’m just a straight white male,” for example.) Identities simply wouldn’t matter - unless, of course, they actually do, and the people at the top of our current identity hierarchy are more concerned about losing their spot than they are with eliminating those hierarchies altogether.
    “When you’re going to sign on to a particular critique by rolling out your identity, exactly how was your identity politics different from what you’re trying to critique?” Crenshaw said. “It’s just a matter of who it is, that’s what you seem to be most concerned about.”
    There’s nothing new about this, she continued. “There have always been people, from the very beginning of the civil rights movement, who had denounced the creation of equality rights on the grounds that it takes something away from them.”
    To Crenshaw, the most common critiques of intersectionality - that the theory represents a “new caste system” - are actually affirmations of the theory’s fundamental truth: that individuals have individual identities that intersect in ways that impact how they are viewed, understood, and treated. Black women are both black and women, but because they are black women, they endure specific forms of discrimination that black men, or white women, might not.
    But Crenshaw said that contrary to her critics’ objections, intersectionality isn’t “an effort to create the world in an inverted image of what it is now.” Rather, she said, the point of intersectionality is to make room “for more advocacy and remedial practices” to create a more egalitarian system.
    “Intersectionality was a prism to bring to light dynamics within discrimination law that weren’t being appreciated by the courts,” Crenshaw said. Nolwen Cifuentes for Vox
    In short, Crenshaw doesn’t want to replicate existing power dynamics and cultural structures just to give people of color power over white people, for example. She wants to get rid of those existing power dynamics altogether - changing the very structures that undergird our politics, law, and culture in order to level the playing field.
    Still, as Crenshaw told me, “plenty of people choose not to assume that the prism [of intersectionality] necessarily demands anything in particular of them.”
    The conservatives I spoke to understood quite well what intersectionality is. What’s more, they didn’t seem bothered by intersectionality as a legal concept, or intersectionality as an idea. (I asked Shapiro this question directly, and he said, “the original articulation of the idea by Crenshaw is accurate and not a problem.”) Rather, they’re deeply concerned by the practice of intersectionality, and moreover, what they concluded intersectionality would ask, or demand, of them and of society.
    Indeed, intersectionality is intended to ask a lot of individuals and movements alike, requiring that efforts to address one form of oppression take others into account. Efforts to fight racism would require examining other forms of prejudice (like anti-Semitism, for example); efforts to eliminate gender disparities would require examining how women of color experience gender bias differently from white women (and how nonwhite men do too, compared to white men).
    This raises big, difficult questions, ones that many people (even those who purport to abide by “intersectionalist” values) are unprepared, or unwilling, to answer. Once we acknowledge the role of race and racism, what do we do about it? And who should be responsible for addressing racism, anyway?
    Intersectionality operates as both the observance and analysis of power imbalances, and the tool by which those power imbalances could be eliminated altogether. And the observance of power imbalances, as is so frequently true, is far less controversy
    Take Care and God bless

      @BigHenFor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The quote he's referring to is:
      "Strong minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events, and weak minds discuss people." Socrates.
      And I think he has a point. Critical Race Theory turns a critical eye on how the ideologies around race has permeated the public space, and has influenced to development of culture, politics, law and economics over time. That's it. It isn't anti-white unless you actually believe that the construct of race is true and has any value. It is a lens on race ideology being a tool of the powerful to enforce social, polical and economic hierarchies that serve their interests more than those they persuade to buy into those ideas. At it's heart it is an examinstion of the allegory of the Emperor's New Clothes, or as it's more commonly known, the American Dream. As it looks at ideas, it is a multidisciplinary subject that bolsters critical rather than conventional thinking, and it is being defamed by political interests that pretend they have no biases, and that people believe everything they are taught at school. Life is a greater teacher, and Life with its lived experience gave birth to the discipline in the first place. This moral panic is a kind of Fahrenheit 451 situation, and shows how insecure the hierarchies we are encouraged to believe in are, so much that they have turned truth into a battleground in an attempt to keep hold of their power. They trade on the insecurities and fears of their supporters, who swapped their birthright - true freedom and peace for all human beings - for a mess of pottage that they ate, and are still hungry. They are broken and enslaved in their minds, and fear the dawn each day. The powerful need us to believe in these fears, and to live divided as people. Your mind is your own. Use it to observe, and choose what you believe with discernment and care. Hold lightly to those beliefs, and test them against reality often. Think deeply and widely, and question.

    Why do we need Critical Race Theory in school to begin with? What is so important about teaching children about race? It just seems that this really doesn't have anything to do with ending racism but is actually keeping it alive. You want to teach about racism than let's teach about racism through the history of mankind thousands of years before the existence of the USA and let's talk about racism in other parts of the world like Russia China North Korea and Latin America and Africa. Let's talk about the treatment of minority groups in China or the mass incarceration of jewish people in the old Soviet Union. Critical Race theory argues that any system that produces unequal results is inherently racist. It removes cultural or personal differences that may account for differences. For example, the high access rate for new African immigrants vs the black population. It conveniently avoids the “inconvenient minorities” like Asians, Indians Middle easterners. Secondly it’s view of history is blatantly false, it’s argument of slavery as driving the economy of the US is blatant propaganda from the confederacy; the King Cotton Myth. Third it attacks scientific reasoning and empirical evidence in favor of anecdotes through standpoint epistemology. Fourth it doesn’t actually solve the issue facing society at the present and gives institutions an excuse for inaction; by blaming it on “well the system is bad and that’s how it always is. Finally, it’s make focus is on race and not on class. There is a reason JP Morgan Chase and She’ll Corp. funding this.

When the spanish came the monarchy and tribe system were slowly abolish. The spanish replace the tribal system of government to civil form but not yet democratic because everyone is appointed by the spanish government officials. The form of labor change from slavery to oppress labor forms. Labors in the hacienda are paid very little for work. We fought the spanish for independence and the americans came and colonize my country. But we revolt again and gain independence, chinese immigrants arrive in our country and build businesses, they succeed and dominate the locals because of their mindset of work hard perseverance. Aside from their individual character they have a close community they help each other to succeed. I am not saying that racism do not exist in america. All I am trying to say is that my be the solution for this inequality is for black community to be closer together hand in hand help each other instead of using their finger to blame the system and white people.

      @@Snacks256 ,can you show me where Texas is removing mention of the civil rights era and women's suffrage? Those are pretty basic and have been taught in all 50 states and have been for a long time. The people who are claiming that critical race theory is not being taught. Are being pedantic about what is being taught. Until recently, there was no term to describe the viewpoint that systemic racism exists, that people fall into two categories: oppressor or oppressed. that biological men are women when they say they are. that all whites are inherently racist and by birth, directly responsible for slavery. I will call this worldview X.
      Worldview X INCLUDES, but is not limited to critical race theory. Like most people, I don't care what you call it, but critical race theory is the common factor in all of this woke guilt garbage. What the critical racists are doing is exactly what intelligent design proponents did to deny that intelligent design is really creationism. In the same way, they claimed that creationism wasn't on the agenda, the wokesters are claiming that critical race theory, under their narrow definition is not being taught. They think they can convince people that CRT has nothing to do with all of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, White Fragility, Intersectionality, Multiple genders. They think that matters. If the CRT term isn't proper, we will oppose the ideas individually by name so when they decide to package them as something else, we will be able to oppose that too. But do show me where Texas is censoring the fact that women once could not vote or the importance of MLK to the civil rights movement and therefore, what those two things are.

      You are an American who refuses to be labeled. I’m a former Democrat, hell, lifelong actually, 43 years. I’m sick of this Woke/CRT commie bs. By design, any “Critical Theory,” (CT) purposefully instills psychopathology. To be a CT, by definition, demands from its followers: activism. They must hold to the idea that “all systems,” all “whatever’s” are broken and need to be dismantled, destroyed. Most of “The Woke,” are not aware of, Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcus, who derived Critical Theory as derivative from Carl Marx‘s original ideas. These authors were shocked that the communist revolutions Marx predicted were not happening. The conclusion: Culture. Culture held people together more than race, class, or gender. But the brilliant essence, central to the theory, the great gotcha, of “Critical Theory,” is that it does not seek to address or remedy problems, as problems cannot be solved without tearing it all down. Thus, we see constant, unfixable, and unsolvable, criticism all the time. This will break even the most durable of human tolerance, and eventually violence will result.
      Destruction and division is the goal. Once the pathology is created, it is on autopilot. The god of critical theory is the narcissistic victim, and the devil is any system in which that victim resides. Most, if not all, “Woke,” adherents simply could not face a world where they are not victims.

      What conservatives are doing is using the complexity of the definition/description to characterise any and all discussion of racism, segregation and racial disparities both current and historical as CRT and then try to have all of it banned.
      TL;DR
      CRT is an analytical framework that tries to explain how inherent bias, cultural assumptions, definitions of "normal" identity, power relations, etc interact to create systems of inequality and inequity. And to construct activist programs to alter the system and its foundational elements to promote (social) justice.
      CRT assumes that racism is pervasive and systemic, rejects "neutral" law and knowledge, places emphasis on narratives of lived experience of subordinate groups. The theory promotes the idea of "interest convergence" i.e. that black civil rights only advances when it (also) benefit a majority of whites. It emphasises that those advances are always temporary: Brown vs Board of Education led to "segregation academies," zero tolerance school discipline, white flight and charter schools so that schools are more segregated today than before Brown.
      I'm slogging through a second textbook and it's like much of the rest of the specialised humanities: full of jargon and abstractions with the occasional insight or enlightening observation.

    This video is intentionally skirting around the main point of this cultural dispute.
    CRT - in the form of the original legal theory and its doctrinal framework - may not be taught in k-12, but the offshoot of CRT - in the form of indoctrinating young children into believing and professing that they are either oppressors or the oppressed, just because of the color of their skin - is definitely being taught in more and more schools.
    Instead of harping on the difference in definition, how about actually investigating what the parents are protesting? Why not have a discussion on the reading materials and assignments that parents say are painting kids of one color as terminally underprivileged and those of another color as irredeemably privileged without taking into account social class or household income etc?

    • @Celestina0
      @Celestina0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you’re saying the parents aren’t protesting CRT, they’re protesting the idea of white privilege? Schools should be free to teach classes on white privilege, because it’s a well recognised phenomenon.

    • @mljh11
      @mljh11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How about protesting the teaching of black children that they are forever the oppressed and never the oppressor, so much so that some of them believe assaulting Asian people for their race is not a racist act?
      Is that ok to protest against?

    • @Celestina0
      @Celestina0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mljh11 yes if that was happening, but it’s not being taught, and if it was it wouldn’t be CRT

    • @mljh11
      @mljh11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's happening, and it's a direct result of this ideology.
      Claiming it's not the dictionary definition of CRT doesn't cut it. Do you think sexually assaulting young kids or committing cultural genocide against indigenous peoples fits the dictionary definition of Catholicism? No of course not, yet why do we see so many instances of such things happening in the Catholic church? It's because some tenets of their ideology will be interpreted by some believers in a certain way and result in such outcomes. Same for CRT.

    • @Celestina0
      @Celestina0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mljh11 those actions are blamed on Catholicism because it was literally the Catholic Church doing them. If black kids commit racist attacks on Asian people I don’t see how you can blame that on some obscure legal theorists

    I don’t really like everyone to takeoff their political hats for like five seconds and use some critical THINKING skills. Why is any group asking you to be afraid of some big bad? To distract you? Who does that ad nauseum? The far right, why? They don’t represent anyone’s interests but their own and if they make you afraid of something like CRT, which is just history, then promise you a solution (when one isn’t needed) they can look like heroes. Look at the language from the think tanks like the heritage foundation, basically saying that CRT is the “next big thing”. They mean that in terms of creating fundraising and pushing forward political propaganda. Please, please, please 🙏 ASK QUESTIONS, read - from credible resources, ask your librarian for help - they are seriously underutilized and amazing researchers, before you protest something you don’t understand.

    • @jackhammer3423

      And ask for critical thinking and bust into clearly biased rhetoric?

      Critical though involves hearing the other side out and some methodology.

    Well they sure are in a panic to teach CRT but not so much how to do math or read and write well. The districts that push CRT have the lowest scores and lowest graduation levels. It is not about education. There are lots of words for it but education is one that does not fit. Indoctrination is one. Opinion is another.

      My concern is that it’s threatening to put the hard work of men like MLK as insignificant. We were learning to be inclusive and come together as Americans.
