- This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 São Paulo's schools have planted mini-forests - MapBiomas creates highly detailed land-use maps of Brazil. It processes satellite images using Google Earth’s powerful algorithms to divide Brazil into 9.6 billion squares each measuring 30m by 30m. Formigas-de-embaúba is a Brazilian NGO that creates mini-forests in public schools using MapBiomas’ technology while educating a new generation of conservationists.
2:15 How Bangladesh builds climate resilience - Bangladesh is one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries. The country is prone to disasters such as cyclones, flooding and landslides. But in the past 50 years Bangladesh has made a lot of progress on climate resilience. Its journey began when it was hit by the deadliest cyclone in recorded history. In 1970 Cyclone Bhola took the lives of 300,000 people. Today, cyclones of comparable intensity cause 99% fewer fatalities in Bangladesh thanks to decades of investment in climate resilience.
4:24 Why young people want to volunteer differently - Numerous global causes continue to need volunteer support from humanitarian crises to food banks, care for the elderly and mental health support. However, the way people offer their time is transforming, according to International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
8:00 This coal mine is now a sustainable energy source - The UK’s coal industry left behind an extensive underground legacy. It’s thought that 25% of UK homes and businesses sit above coalfields. After decades of disuse, many of these tunnels have filled with water. This water is warmed naturally by geothermal energy and can then be used to heat buildings above ground.
