  • In this video we discuss the Five IEC 61131-3 Programming Languages. These consist of Ladder (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Sequential Flow Chart (SFC), Structured Text (ST), and Instruction List (IL)!
While many of these languages can do the same functionality, they also each have special advantages and specific drawbacks, and as a well-rounded controls or automation engineer you will likely need an understanding of them all!!

Why am I only seeing this video now?? 😁 thanks for the shout out, enjoyed learning about these programming languages, I’d never heard of them before!

Hey Dale!! You're very welcome for the shout out and thank you for all the support as always my friend! Not sure why this one did so poorly by views - I had quite a few people asking for this from my old video about top things a controls engineer should know, and I know its something fairly niche to my field but still commonly searched for! Maybe I did a bad job titling it or didn't make it very Search Engine Optimized, but regardless, very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching it mate, cheers!

Glad to have come across this channel.
I was looking up to see what is "IEC 61131-3 programming language" from a job listing in LinkedIn for a controls engineer. FBD reminds me of MATLAB Simulink and LabVIEW.
ST, reminds me of lot of if-else statements I wrote for an application for a physics lab.
Q: How about C? I am familiar with C++. I decided to learn C where I heard it's used in controls.

Thanks for watching and glad you found it useful! In my opinion structured text is the closest to a C based language and some of the semicolon syntax is quite like C++. I typically say if someone has a more electrical background they will prefer ladder logic and if they have a more software focused background they will probably prefer structured text, but after years of being in the industry, you would probably need to learn both ultimately! And fbd is very nice for totalizing and PID loops and a lot of complicated instructions as well!

Is there any certificates in these languages? I learned ladder logic working my first job out of college, but now that I have moved I am trying to bolster my resume with a certificate.

Hi! I am not sure there are certificates in these languages because every PLC manufacturer (ABB, Rockwell, Siemens, etc.) had slightly different formats and conventions, and no place I have ever worked has required or offered any certifications but if there is it would probably be done through the IEC organization!

    What's CFC logic?

Do you mean SFC? Sequential flow chart?
