I am 69 now so it was over 50 years ago since we went as kids. , probably 60 years and I was pretty young. Years later I took my children there to let them have the same experience. So glad you found it and enjoyed the BBQ and Brunswick Stew.
Not my favorite bbq but love visiting there because of the history and tradition in that building. Stop by everytime I'm anywhere near! The smell of decades of woodsmoke just permeates the entire building!
I am in Atlanta, so my personal go-to for Barbeque is Old Hickory House, which has been around for over 50 years. I love that they serve chocolate cream pie, my favorite. Their cornbread , ribs, sandwiches, cole slaw, and Brunswick stew is to die for. The location is in Tucker in the Northlake area. ( Robin is their Number One waitress, too ! ). Oh ! They also serve the BEST fried green tomatoes !❤️

But, their chocolate cream pie is to die for ! As well as their fried green tomatoes and petal sauce. Hoping one day soon you can move back to the Tucker area. Would love to meet you for an early lunch one day ! ALSO, their counterpart in Norcross is JR’s Loghouse Barbeque. Super good. I live inbetween the two restaurants.❤️

The place looks like the real deal and I loved seeing the firewood burning and their ham that's cooking all day and night. Has to be the best ever. Fresh Air is a state treasure. I'm 70 and lived in Georgia my whole life. Both of my parents loved bbq, and we ate it often. There used to be hundreds of authentic, old south bbq joints all over the state. Unfortunately the old school, labor intensive method of smoking meat on a real pit is dying out. The ones that are left need to be appreciated and enjoyed for as long as they are still going.
You all need to look up the origin of Brunkswick stew! Very interesting. My grandma used to make it in late fall outdoors over a wood fire in a large cast iron kettle- pot..it consisted of end of year fresh vegetables from the garden and meat from hunters' luck! Brunswick, Georgia claims to be the originator of this mouthwatering delicacy 😂
I love this that place! Get some BBQ to go and eat it at Indian Springs State Park or High Falls State Park...great food and beautiful scenery in the area.
Shane’s tour was pretty neat. Looks like a great place. Can’t get better than hickory smoked. Not sure about that Brunswick stew though…Everyone is different, but I like mine more chunky not oatmealish like that looked like. Couldn’t see the meat and potatoes in it. It was like a soupy mash. Hope it tasted better than it looked. lol Glad that you and Tammy got to eat some great barbecue. Every place has their own unique food. Living here in Savannah, we have great shrimp and grits. I do miss great fried catfish and coleslaw from living in NW Tennessee!!! Y’all be safe and hope all will be fine at your home. It’s coming up through Savannah, but we are ready and prepared!

I can vouch for Fresh Air. I travel down to central Georgia at least twice a year to visit family and Fresh Air is a mandatory stop along the way. I do it as much for the Brunswick stew as for the BBQ.
Definitely a hotspot during deer season! Nothing like fresh air after a great morning in the fall woods. The smell is truly memorable, and yes the saw dust is real.

This and Southern Soul are the two best places to me in Georgia. Also he’s not kidding about the smoke from Georgia traditional BBQ. I love outside of the US and I get together with guys from all over the country to make BBQ and you can always tell mine due to the ridiculous smoke cloud.
Don’t think you’ll find a BBQ restaurant with more “BBQ restaurant atmosphere” any where in the world than this Fresh Air in Jackson Ga. Plus most smoke the front shoulders of a hog which is called a Boston butt, but Fresh Air smokes the more tender & more expensive hams of a hog. How many BBQ restaurants have been successful for 95 yrs? Have eaten at many BBQ restaurants in each of the 8 most southeastern states and out to KC This is still my favorite.

Taste testing BBQ all the way home. Love trying local foods instead of big chain restaurants. I always get a plastic bib , otherwise dribbles on my top tells everybody what I had for my last meal. Crush restaurants recommended by locals.
I loved Old Hickory House. I would go to the one in Forest Park. Their sliced beef bbq sandwiches were delicious and the Brunswick stew was awesome! I think the company closed down.
I live in NC and I'm so tired of BBQ! It's the same thing everywhere, same sides, jus tired of it. Plus, now I don't eat pork because Torah. So I have to always get chicken. Just whining here, I guess!! 😂
Fresh Air is trash. I actually danced a happy dance when they closed the location on Atlanta Highway in Bogart/Athens. The pork tastes like it was steamed in white vinegar. Zero smoked flavor.

OHH is the OG. I used to eat there at least 5 times a week. Now I'm in Athens, so I only get OHH every couple of months.

My dad, grandfather, cousin and myself used to eat here every weekend during deer hunting season when I was growing up.

Great BBQ Tim. I have only experienced BBQ in Kansas City and OKC. Kansas City is home to the American Royal every year, a BBQ fest.

Nope, the best BBQ and Brunswick stew is at Smoakies at exit 102 Cordele, Ga. Just a rifle shot from the exit ramp.
