my dad would always play this song in the car when i was a kid, i didnt appreciate it then because i thought it was horrible and the album cover was “weird”. but ive come back to them now, i have no words for how good this is and live is one of the best hands down. thank you dad, i didn’t appreciate it then but i do now
A perfect song that represents the darker thoughts that run through everyone's mind when they're feeling at their lowest or most vulnerable. We alone are our own worst enemies.
Damn, this takes me to my teen years. Jamming out in 1994 at 14 and again in 1999 when I turned 19 trekking across India. Oh to go back to those years just once. Guess I'll settle for time travel through music.
One of the 90s best band ! They seemed a little weird at first, but grew on you... I was fortunate to get a personally signed CD of my Throwing Copper disc... Which I had already played to death on the long crowded ride to n from work at the time, complete with the wear n tear on it ... Thank again Ed !

I like how this song goes right into the action. It doesn’t work for every song, and maybe this was the only way this one did… but it suits it so well.
I can't imagine a more perfect song for my fire and I. . .Fear is not the end of this. . .and only love can save us now! 1 of the best things to ever hit radio . .. .LIVE!
the words I Alone Love You ran thru my brain whenever I was with dashing Dave. I lost him suddenly in 1998 at age 34. RIP my dearest love and favorite lawyer. I will love him until I take my last breath.
this is the ultimate dark night of the soul battle song. I could see this being played as the score to a movie about Jesus' battle with temptation in the desert
Reminds me of when i was a little girl. Always had it on the radio with my dad when we were going somewhere. And if it was not in the car with my dad, it was in the car with my best friend back then and her dad. Childhood memories for sure!!! love it
@@marka6187 l completely agree, the 90s was an unparalleled decade of the most brilliant and original musical creativity. Right up there with the 60s and 70s in terms of innovation and genius. We may never see its like again.
@Sarma Sniper You are all wrong. Anyone could figure out that this song is about prostitutes and taking ungodly amounts of drugs. Just kidding. The great thing about lyrics like this that are somewhat vague and ambiguous is that the listener can interpret the song however they want. I always kinda thought this song was about the many challenges many people encounter while re arranging their sock drawer.
oh shit that's crazy memory..i was a child and sometimes used to listen a lot of original cds of my brothers..this one and selling the drama i use to listen in loop..great 90s..
The show 'Homicide Life on the Street' (1993-1999 RIP) brought me here a long time ago. I think this song appeared twice in the show's soundtrack. Great song paired with an even greater show.
i remember reading an interview in the 90s where he explained that the song is about the alienating effects of organized religion, and that what he's doing is portraying god as an abusive father or abusive husband that controls through fear.
live _did_ get far too christiany for my tastes starting with the fifth record. but, i'd place their first four records in a category with bands like u2 and rem, and nine inch nails, that were more about questioning faith and trying to get past it - but without losing the communitarian aspects of religion. they're great records for kids that want to believe people are fundamentally good, but have a really hard time with the basic premise of a sky god.
Very well put Jessica. I'm not religious or spiritual per se, but the message of the song being to discover your own beliefs and not subscribe to dogma is welcome even if it is still pro-deism.
A scientist that lost his religious fiance... I come back to this and cry. We battled about who was right. She experienced something I cant until it's too late...

Yesssss!! I just rediscovered this song when the chorus got stuck in my head..
Same! I haven't listened to this for like 8 years!
The band admitted years ago that the song was about Jesus calming the storm, when the disciples were on the boat and afraid.
Its a metaphor. Not discrediting what you have to say but we are all on a boat out to sea. Jesus is with us saving us from being castaways
The song is about not listening to others opinions on spirituality and learning for yourself what you believe.
Wonderfully said. It's also makes me feel this way about someone who DOES always seem to be despondent afraid and ready to be rejected.
