This is a great video for anyone who understands sound waves or wants to know more about how they react with surrounding surfaces. It was very enjoyable, all the comparisons side by side with all the different mics was perfect.
@@DrumBeatsOnline for sure, it's always appreciated when people work to introduce people to these concepts. I do industrial ultrasonic testing looking for defects in welds using reflected sound waves. I have to be a sound wave nerd unless I want to be broke ass. I really appreciate the video, it was very entertaining. I'm certain a lot of people will learn a lot from it. ^_^ sick drumming in the video though
More mass = more sound proofing. The foam really helps most with decreasing reverberation (specifically high-mids and high frequencies with the thickness foam you’re using), which is what the space really needed. Sounds much better for vocal clarity and I prefer the drum sound treated! Can pump in the reverb in post!
The reduction in external volume by way of “treating” the room was negligible, and given the associated cost, it was ‘diminished returns’. So, it was a valuable experiment because of that (for me, at least). Thanks for posting!
Crazy how much less echo you got. Great work. I am curious as whether you treated the whole room (four walls, ceiling, floor), or just the section of the wall behind the drum set? Also would love a video teaching us how to record our practice with music. My drum sounds so loud and totally drone out the music sound when I tried to record my homework for DBO
Love the space! For your videos it’s light years better. Great for your speech. It was awesome you did the comparison. I had a space I ended up doing the whole acoustic treatment. Everything was spot on other than the drums. It was nice I was able to control the reverb but had a low midrange overtone that was hard to eq out. I Ended up changing locations and now in a bigger space with only carpet on the floor. Been afraid to do the treatment again because the drums sound so much more open and bright. It’s awesome to hear your comparisons and if confirmed my suspicions. Going to try mobile acoustic walls to try help with reverb and eq. Keep up the good work👍🏼
The drums sounded way better to me with less treatment, your voice no dought is way better with. It's like you created a huge control room. Maybe somewhere in-between would be the sweet spot. Enjoyed the video.
Very Interesting Topic and Helpful Video . Was looking for this kind of tests , as I was trying to soundproof my drum room , and yeah found the perfect video. Gabe to the rescue. Thanks mate.
@@DrumBeatsOnline I fuckin’ bet haha pretty insane. Hey! Don’t know if you’ve seen my cover of Bow Down but I would be stoked if you scoped it! Just over on my channel. Lmk! 🙏
This is great info! Next year our new house will be done and I will have my own personal drum attic. But since we have neighbors on both sides, soundproofing is inevitable. Thanks for this!
It is much better noisewise for your neighbors but i think it is a little too much recordingwise. Some echo is missing to my ears. Thx for doing all this hard work for us!
Wow, that's very helpful. Many thanks. Was looking for a section wherein you would demonstrate how the sound-proofing worked - before and after sound-proofing.
I like the new studio much better. Thank you for this video 🙏🏻 its very interesting. I have my edrum set at home but its not the same.. so your video is really helpful! My favourite drummer 😊🥁
Treated is better of course but I think people haven’t truly discovered what it is that is loud about a drum kit. For example. If you put a thick roof on a section on the drums (Snare side) and you put a wall with foam on the side and infront of the drums you’ll reduce a ton of volume. Companies should make foam that goes near the rim of the snare drum on the angle infront of the snare between where you’d put a cymbal and that would cut more volume. I never want my cymbals to be quieter except for my ozone because that thing is harsh.
Awesome, i'm really throwing myself into drumming right now, I'm a Civil Engeneer but never work on an acoustic project. Studying a lot these days and ready to apply some tricks in my drum room as soon as possible. Btw, its great to see videos like this, just show how important acoustic treatment is. Congrats my friend and keep drumming!!
sound proofing is alway important to keep your neighbours happy but internally I think you went a little too far, I prefer the live sound in most test. you did great with the editing of the video so well done my friend! I think I'd try flippable panels on the wall to offer that flexibility you want.
I think it’s crazy how much it gets rid of the echo. Also if I want to get drum mics just to start recording mine what would you recommend but not to expensive?
For sure! It's pretty awesome. All depends on your budget, but the EAD 10 is a really cool solution. Otherwise, maybe get a couple sm57's for that you could use in a multitude of different ways.
So awesome man great work k. This video. One day I hope to have a studio that sounds this good. All of my family and neighbors can't wait for me to have one either but they care more about it being as quite as yours 😜.
I like the sound of the untreated room better when it's with the drum mics. But treated sounds way better on the other mics. The snare punches hard when it's untreated. You using any room mics?
Much preferred the untreated room. I like a big ambient drum sound, makes the drums more fun to play. The new way is cleaner...but lifeless in some ways too. Just my opinion....
My question with these things is: why won't you just fill all the walls and ceiling with acoustic foam if you want to reduce volume? Besides cost. Does my idea make any difference or does it make your drums sound bad?
Imho treating made it better for a camera and room mics but drum mix spoiled cuz it lost it's slight reverb that was needed for snare and other drums. Also kick became a little boomy. However these words are subjective and don't make sense if you got a proper mixing console where you can edit the eq and add as much reverb as needed. Good job tho! Glad you won't be as loud to your neighbours as you used to lol
SUCH A GREAT VID !!! I can't say which one is better cause the one without the soundproof had a bit of reverb(which I like) and the other one was all great even tho there is no reverb ALL I can say is U ARE GREAT!!!!
From a recording perspective the live room would have been a lot cooler for the drums and the natural bigness and ambience. All tho treated helps with the speaking immensely. I think this is why some people have treated control rooms and a more ambient live room.
My neighbours have started complaining about the noise from my drums 😔 I’m playing an E-kit and I’ve got a shock absorbing mat, I added extra mesh to the heads, bought thinner sticks, I covered the beater with cloth, but it’s still too loud. Anything else I can do?
Judging by the space you have in that studio, you could have built a studio in the studio by building a second wall insulated within this existing one and almost completely block the sound trying to get out.
Nice video - and editing, too! Of course the treated room sounds better, but I was surprised at how much more defined your toms sounded in the treated room. Awesome!
Hi Gabe: I have 2 issues. 1. My main enemy is my kick pedal/kick drum pounding on the floor (otherwise the ceilings ng of the lounge room below where my wife sits to watch tv. I have put high density foam under the pedal & more recently put a special Roland anti sound pad. But sound still comes through (& even though sound comes out of nearby electronic amp). How can I deal with this?? 2. I would like to have heard a sound like report from neighbours - before & after sound proofing. Regards Owen Brown from Oz
How does his drums sound that good from a camera mic that close? Any time I record that close, the sound is super muddy and you can’t tell what’s going on.
zoom and camera mic doesn't mean much in this comparison - you should have mic'd just outside of the drum room - then mic outside your house where neighbors would actually be
The only way to sound proof is to add mass and to islote vibrations. The best technique is the concept of building a room within the room. It's the most cost effective. Sound treatment does very little to sound proofing.

It’s a classic!
Nice work man. One thing. I would HIGHLY recommend you putting a de-easer on your voice. Keep up the good work!
very informative and real and clear review of how would you get when you have acoustic treatment installed.
Sounds awesome with the soundproofing
The wooden blocks aren't lessening the reverb, it's called a diffuser, it just changes how sounds reflect and stops standing waves from occuring
Sounds so much more direct and clear. Which you would expect.
What was the DB reduction for outside the studio?

So dry and punching, perfect! 🤘

i think you can still improve the low end more with some bass traps. the mids and highs are very tamed! great job
Omg i didnt expect how much the difference is 🤯

My drum studio is NON square (no hard angles). Just a couple of baffles to knock down standing waves.
I’ve gotta say I like the untreated drum mic sound best. The treated sounds too dead, I understand it obviously serves its purpose for recording etc

Hey Gabe, how do you circulate air throughout the room
It has been a serious problem for my room
Not gabe but have you considered using s-ducts?
honestly i kiund o flike the reverb on the untreated room...just gotta use a good room mic for the treated room to make it saound 3d
I like the processed drum mics in the untreated area. The treating killed too much of the ambient body. (Unless you're into 70s tones?)

I personally like the reverb sound of the untreated. But I am sure there are good reasons to have it treated. Probably for better recording?
not really.. I prefer it untreated. the thing is that you have to commit to the reverb
What is the height of the ceiling?
Now you need to add Bass traps to get rid of that 300Hz and below box sound
Chann.....
Love it....
