The idea of a god was created by humans to answer complicated questions that humans could not understand/answer at a time when everything was primitive. For example: Human does not accept to die so he created a paradise where you live forever. Human does not accept that a killer is executed and that It his sentence is over so he created a hell. Human does not understand how the universe can be so big so he created a creator. Human does not understand why humans are the only species that evolves quickly and not the others it is probably that someone put us there. I think you get the idea but now that we have all the modern tools we understand that all this makes no sense that it was a primitive way to reassure/ manipulate people.
Very simple reading of religion. Maybe respect humans enough and other people enough to imagine that they weren't so simple in the approach? So many different people, so many different cultures, different languages, different continents, different times. All have a connection to a divine. Maybe there is more to it then - 'primitive man dumb, us clever'
@@starkiller23610 Very simple indeed Culture? Created by humans. Language? Created by humans. Continent? They were there before humanity. Different time? Yes a time when man had no help no machine no rocket no telescope or computer to help them understand. Being primitive does not mean being stupid they were primitive because they had nothing to understand except their brains and the brain can have a lot of imagination if it wants/need. And humans have no connection to anything you’re here just because one day your parents had unprotected sex that’s all.
Since you say that the universe began to exist 13 billion years ago, then it must have a cause (cause and effect). And that cause by necessity should be uncaused. because if it had a cause, then you'll have the problem of the infinite regression that will make it impossible for the universe to exist. Example: you're in a library and in front of you a queue with infinite number of people, would you get the book? Never. So Their brothers in humanity, that uncaused cause , we as believers call him God. Simple.
I see your point, however I find it hard to rule out a creator, due to the simple fact that we have intelligent life, and we experience emotions, and I think the fact that humans naturally tend to create things is reflecting the fact that Creation took part from a bigger part

He contradicts himself. "I don't believe in a god" can be taken as "I don't believe god exists". He then claims "God cannot be known to exist or not exist". There are only 3 takes on religion holistically. 1. Those who believe God exists (religious) 2. Those who believe God DNE (atheists) 3. There have always been great works by people in history who have been associated with particular religions. One the tricky parts there is that religions have not been kind to ‘non believers’ so many scholars have nodded at the appropriate time while not believing.

As an agnostic, I like this way of putting it. There's so much that seems just straight up unanswerable. Even if there was an answer to how the universe began, if it was created by an entity or if it just had always been, any answer we can think up not only doesn't make any sense to us from our current understanding of reality but also it doesn't seem likely we will ever be able to find an answer.
@@Raiddd__ For one, what happens to our being after we die? That question seems unanswerable because all we've ever known is existing. The concept of not existing or ceasing to exist doesn't make any sense to us. But then again the ramifications of existing forever doesn't sound too pleasant either.

And there is no "showing" it to another person. They have to go through their own personal journey to make their own personal discovery. There is no other way. And I completely agree there are lots of fake religions created to control people and extort resources from them. I was just surprised not all of them happened to be that. Also I thought this "personal discovery" was depicted VERY well in the "True detective" season 1. You also have a pragmatic main character. In the initial episodes they show phony religions. But in the final episode he discovers the truth personally. And again, there is now way to convey it to another person. They have to have their own discovery. In any case, I completely empathize with any genuine atheist. Their train of thought was once my own, too.
@bryanbigler3339 lacks any evidence to there being a God. How every other God has been found to be false over the years, it's just the main one's turn. The fact that there's been no major or minor magical event like the parting of the red Sea bit camera shy are we God.. The fact that the bible was writen by men for men to control mankind through fear and bribery Can God forgive any sin?
@@bryanbigler3339 My parents were atheistic, too. None of has been baptized. We've never attended any church meetings. We weren't fighting against faith, we just considered it a silly notion. Friends were telling me about their religion for a while. And they kept saying I need to pray to God and ask God, if what they were telling me was true. I genuinely considered that a futile idea, because I was absolutely convinced there was no one to pray to. No one to answer. God was just a fairy tail for adults. Friends kept saying I needed to pray, if I wanted to know the truth. Eventually, I started caring about those friends more and I decided that no matter how absurd their suggestion sounded it didn't really cost me anything to do it. So I decided I would actually try asking God, if what they were telling me was true. Just so that I could honestly tell them "I've tried what you asked and, as I expected, nothing happened". Obviously, I wasn't going to try more than once. Even once seemed bizarre enough. So one evening I just locked the door to my room (to not be disturbed) and asked out loud: "God do you exist and is what my friends told me about you true?". To my astonishment I've got my answer. They turned out to be right. Something I considered absolutely improbable. After an event like this you can't go back to not knowing. I understood there was another dimension to life I never knew existed. I've asked many questions since and received many answers. I always believed, if God existed everyone would have known about it already. Just because of how important that knowledge would have been. I believed people would have the same knowledge about God and would not have been arguing about God's nature and the purposes of God's interaction with humanity. I believe, it's because people often are just taught by their families to believe whatever their families believed or whatever happens to be the dominant religion in their country. Neither of which are an indicator of truth. Now I'm strongly convinced that the only way a person can know, if any information they come cross about God is true, is to ask God directly.
People should have respect for what another person believes, and leave it at that, and the world will be a better place for us all, while we are still here
In my country, Christians are trying to make laws according to their religious beliefs. They are trying to teach creationism in science class. They want to list the Ten Commandments on public property. These are great reasons to fight against these beliefs. If people would keep their beliefs to themselves, then no one would feel the need to argue about it.
What Brian Cox is trying to say is, we're asking the wrong questions about the universe. Instead of wondering who created it, we should be asking if it was created at all, if it had a beginning, or if it needs one. He points out that we might be making a big mistake by trying to apply the rules we see inside the universe to the universe itself. Let's use a simple analogy: think of a video game created by a developer. The characters in the game can only understand and question things based on the game's world, which operates under rules set by the developer. These rules might not at all resemble the rules of our own universe. For example, in our universe, every effect has a cause, but in the game, things might just happen without a cause if that's how the developer designed it. Applying this to the universe, it's possible that the universe operates under a different set of rules and might even be eternal, not needing a cause for its existence. Just like we might think of a god as eternal to avoid an endless loop of questioning who created the god, we could think of the universe in the same way. It might have always been here, starting from what we perceive as a singularity and then expanding. The why and how of its existence and whether those questions are even relevant might be beyond our current understanding.
You could imagine the analogy of a circle. From an outsider perspective, we, humans, see the circle in it´s whole, as a geometrical shape. For someone living in the line of circle, however long he or it will continue on the line of the circle, he will go on forever, because it comes around infinitely. Someone living in the circle itself, could find the edge of the universe it lives in, name it the line, then come to the same conclusion.
@NameLastName-zo7py not sure how you missed the point, but he's simply stating the logic of an agnostic belief. How did you feel he made the counter argument to the notion that we haven't the ability to know whether there's a god or not? I'm very curious
@@KoBez44I suppose you could but is that any easier to grasp than what this fella said? Not in my opinion, and the point of an analogy is to simplify complex ideas I thought
Its simple people.....Whats the harm and what if its more than just numbers. Its a natural cause of higher thought that faith is produced to perpetuate "will" and the Universe (Cox) to ask Why in a seemingly deterministic Universe. Its cold to not "feel" past the edge. We assumed the Earth was flat, wrong. We thought we were the center of the solar system, wrong. We assumed we could not fly faster than sound, wrong. We now think light speed is a constant. A round world, the 3rd of 8 worlds at the edge of a small galaxy, breaking barriers everyday. We are always wrong until we are not. There is always another layer to existence. Why does there need to be a beginning in time to justify a God, may it be just a higher place making our layer be what it is naturally. Maybe its bigger out there, different rules different laws, different life (God). Rules that may even dictate Gods choices to create, similar to our daily creations (Machines). Similar to the rules that dictate the PC developer in a realm of space time creating a binary electronic universe in the computer game. Therefore, its shortsighted to believe the layers end at Cox simply because of the rule of time. Maybe Cox cant ever equate it. Could it be beyond our programming. Maybe over time our higher thought reveals a way of living that transcends instincts. We dream now, we believe in things we cant see. Maybe that's the start to enlightenment. Without that mental change it would have not allowed men like Cox to contemplate and equate what is equatable scientifically. It may simply be meant to believe not be discovered, not calculated. Different rules. Its worth the faith, just in-case.
I mean i would say worrying about if theres a god or no god is beneath Brian Cox. He is literally thinking about the foundation of the universe and steps into unknown territory every day. To worry about stuff that cant be disproven or proven is not what a scientist does. Thats sort of like the opposite of trying to gather evidence to expand ur knowledge of the universe is to sit and ponder a yes or no about something that cant be disproven either way and theres no evidence for.

People who believe in a god always comes back to the argument that it is illogical that our existence is pure chance and doesn’t have a designer. The only thing we know is that a series of astronomically low odd events occurred for our existence to take place. The universe is way bigger than the possibility of human conception. So big in fact, that the odds of these events happening are greater than the odds of them not happening somewhere in the universe. The historical events that made our planet inhabitable had to happen in the specific order that they did for us to exist, and evolve from single-cell organisms to what we are today. @@kalaharikreef7371 It was a joke - I agree with Brian. And my joke is just as true as Brian's reasoning. Science do not rule out a creator. But that does not mean that there has to be one. And, and that is even more important. It does not say anything at all about any properties of that unknown creator. The main problem with religions is that they are giving the creator/god detailed properties. Somehow we knows that it is blue and has an elephant trunk. Or we know that it does not want us to eat pork. All those detailed properties makes different religions totally incompatible. Also, nothing in today's more modern world give any support for the ancient claims. No burning bushes are talking to us today. And we do know how thunder and lightning is made today, and it is not Thor that makes them with his hammer Mjölnir.
But science is a religion. It already presupposes that “nature is behind all” and can only give naturalistic answers. Separating religion and science does not make sense, since science is indeed religious in favor of nature, but it cannot say where nature begins or ends, so it just presupposes that everything is nature. However one thing that this hypothesis that “nature is behind everything” needs is time, which is why Charles Lyell’s uniformitarianism and Charles Darwin theory of common ancestry were widely accepted: Because they defended the idea of the existence of millions of years. Modern science wasn’t born with the desire to know the truth, but to completely be gone with the idea of there being a sentient creator and appeal to nature, while believing that this is unbiased and non religious, but it really is…

Everything we observe in the real world was created. A car had a creator, a house had a creator etc. Based on observation it is common sense that the universe has a creator. Science is the study of the physical world and can explain how things work, not why things work. From science we know an spontaneous electrical impulse causes the heart of a foetus to start beating. What causes and why is the an spontaneous electrical impulse in the first place?
What a very silly comment and the 4 that liked it I don't understand why. Jesus the son of God walked the earth and performed eye witness miracles that defied physics that doesn't mean I don't believe in physics or the universe but I'm not going denying Jesus Christ. Christ he is and always will be king of this mighty Universe it's been proven time and time again not that it needed to be.
Actually, that’s not entirely true. If everything needed a beginning, then we'd be stuck in an endless loop of asking, 'Well, what started the thing that started the thing?' That’s why cosmologists often talk about concepts like the Big Bang or the idea of a timeless universe. And let’s not forget quantum physics, where particles can pop in and out of existence without a 'beginning' as we understand it. Also, if everything needs a beginning, where’d God come from? Did he have a beginning, or is he the one exception? If God can be eternal, why can’t the universe (or whatever caused it) be the same? The universe may not follow our everyday logic of cause and effect. It’s like trying to use a recipe book to explain a black hole-doesn’t quite work. Just because our brains like to think everything needs a starting point doesn’t mean the universe is playing by those rules. TL;DR: The universe is weird, and 'beginnings' aren’t as clear-cut as we think. Think about that!
@@echoch.4693The analogy of the infinite line can be used to understand the issues with the concept of an eternal universe-one that has no beginning and has existed forever. Imagine you’re standing in that line with infinite people in front and behind you. If something valuable, like a gift, is to be distributed to everyone starting from the first person, it can never reach you because there is no starting point. Similarly, if the universe were eternal, with no beginning, then we could think of the passage of time in the same way as that infinite line. If the universe has existed forever, it means an infinite amount of time would have to pass before reaching the present moment. But just as you can never reach the first person in the line because there isn’t one, we could never reach "now" if time extended infinitely into the past. There would always be an infinite "amount" of time still left to pass before reaching the present moment. This suggests that just like in the analogy, for us to have reached "now," there must have been a starting point-a beginning of time or a starting moment of the universe. Without such a beginning, it’s logically impossible for us to arrive at the present moment because we’d be stuck waiting for an infinite past to "finish." (Forever will have to finish for now to exist in that case). This illustrates why the idea of an eternal universe without a beginning poses a paradox, proving that the universe, like everything else, must have had a beginning in order to exist and reach the point we are at today.

At that moment i just have to logically tell you how a scientist created this mobile phone. Similarly if you see a table and ask who created it or made it, you are told that a carpenter made it. God is immaterial and outside of time or more accurately, in infinite time. In the beginning there was no space, time or energy, but there wasn't nothing as "nothing" is metaphysically impossible. If it is infinite(unbounded), then it transcends time which is in the realm of the supernatural, because it will take an infinite amount of time to traverse it.
Even we haven't completely understand our planet Earth
What’s one thing that seems in principle unanswerable?
@@Raiddd__ For one, what happens to our being after we die? That question seems unanswerable because all we've ever known is existing. The concept of not existing or ceasing to exist doesn't make any sense to us. But then again the ramifications of existing forever doesn't sound too pleasant either.
Antaganism was so perfectly used here. I can't stand that need for people to input their idealogy into your sentence, especially in this case.

@@allmight8127I used to think God was a "Santa Claus for adults". Just another story. As they say "You don't know, until you know". Once you discover He actually exists, there is no going back.

Could we look at god as the developer?

@@ThunderRat I don’t know… just like you don’t you. The difference is you’ve decided to lie to yourself that some complex being (even more complex than life) called a creator did it. Your logic is completely flawed. It’s more reasonable to pursue the line of questioning is how could abiogenesis occur in nature where there is lots of matter and lots of time. Where chemistry, becomes biology. There’s more evidence to support this theory than of any creator.
But I’m quite happy to say that I don’t know, you don’t know and not a single person alive knows.
You’re welcome to believe in your fairy tales, but until you present proof, you don’t know.
@@ThunderRatas someone else commented somewhere in this comment section. “The watchmakers analogy:” the watchmaker (a god in this analogy) is more complex than the watch (humans or anything else in the analogy). If something exists that is complex it has to have a designer. The only problem is, then who created god? Because if that argument is to be used to explain complex things it has to also be applied to a god/creator. We can’t pick and choose what the argument applies to.
And there is probably intelligent life somewhere else in the universe, possibly with ever far greater intelligence than humans.
But it comes back to the point that we just don’t know. We can’t say for sure that there wasn’t a creator, and we can’t say for sure that there was. There is no proof to either statement. And saying that there is proof of a creator of the universe, or that there isn’t, is false and ignorant either way.

However one thing that this hypothesis that “nature is behind everything” needs is time, which is why Charles Lyell’s uniformitarianism and Charles Darwin theory of common ancestry were widely accepted:
Because they defended the idea of the existence of millions of years.

Something has to have a beginning for it to exist. Think about that
Actually, that’s not entirely true.
@@Geoppler All of that just to assert that an infinite length of time or infinite series of events cannot be traversed. Do you believe God exists and that he has existed for an infinite length of time?
@@petemiller2920 if there's God that's all powerful, can he create a thing that is so heavy the he cannot carry it?

@whygodisscience And most people who say they don't believe there is a god usually say there's no evidence to back it up. So why not show us the evidence? I think there's a Santa Claus. Why would people say there isn't? Same idea. When there's no evidence people tend to realize something probably doesn't exist or if it exists it works differently than others believe it does.
@whygodisscience From experience, a lot of the psychiatric drugs can cause negative side effects...I experienced these...or the person isn't receiving the right combination. I once was having issues with depression. When a mood stabilizer was added to my anti-depressant I was able to go back to work within a week after being bedridden for weeks. Similarly if you see a table and ask who created it or made it, you are told that a carpenter made it. At that moment you dont ask who created carpenter.
So in conclusion, when a person is logically told that god made human, it is irrelevant to ask who created god. But yes, when we will se god after death (in afterlife) and we see him and think he must be created, at that moment it will be relevant to ask him who created god.
God is immaterial and outside of time or more accurately, in infinite time. In the beginning there was no space, time or energy, but there wasn't nothing as "nothing" is metaphysically impossible. However, the primary focus of the verse is to call attention to the power and creative ability of God, urging people to reflect on the creation and the signs that lead to belief in Him.
And why are we so certain that the holly books in all religions are 2000 years old and have the God's word in it? This is something that humans say. It can mean absolutely nothing.
I don't think the Creator reaches us through words and language that we developed here on Earth.
I believe, we do not reach God through words. Words are for the mind.
We connect to God with our soul. There is no language.

and everyone who says he/she knows is LYING.
It all comes down to belief and faith because we really don't know
