    Sarnia toxic issues have never been a secret to us who lived there.

    It's so easy for people to say well move, it's not that easy. This is where we are from, our home. Aamjiwnaang is all we know, our history is here

      Plus, you really shouldn't feel the need to move. This is not some uncontrollable earthquake or flood zone in which your choices are limited. These issues are entirely controllable.

      People are still dying from the pollution that seeps through the soil in Sarnia. The carcinogens float in the air above industry every day. I left in 78 after high school because I knew what ESSO, Dow and the like we’re doing to the city. Your history will be that you stayed in Sarnia and died of cancer.

    Has there been any update on this story? We were looking to retire in that area as I would like to be closer to friends and family; I am a ex-pat from Michigan. I will not increase our chance of cancer from benzene nor tulene by at least 30%. Where is the US EPA? Where is the Ministry of the Environment? "Chemical Valley"; a shame on Canada AND the US for not protecting our people and our beautiful Lake Heron, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie. Isn't anybody listening? This is heartbreaking.

      If you’re still interested in living in the Sarnia area. It’s a large enough city where if you live on the North-Eastern side you really won’t even notice the valley maybe only if you go downtown on the odd weekend for lunch or something. Honestly you’re only really going to put yourself at risk if you live right beside the place or you work there. Both my grandparents have lived and worked in Sarnia 70+ years and they’re still going strong at 92 and 90 years old.

    My home town is Sarnia. Both sides of my family trace their roots through Sarnia/Bright’s Grove. I loved living in Sarnia as a kid. But I left after high school. There’s always been this joke that Sarnia is the only city with morning breath. When the wind was blowing south to north, the smell from the oil refineries was stifling. Sarnia has the highest cancer rate in Canada. My parents both died of it. My seven aunts died from it. So many of my childhood friends died of cancer as well. The heavy industry is to blame. Dow Chemical dumped perchlor into the St. Clair river in the mid ‘70s. Dow has vacated the site they once polluted, but all of the valuable river side property is unsafe and Dow would rather pay taxes on that land every year rather than spend hundreds of millions to reclaim the soil. Centennial Park was completely closed for years because of carcinogenic soil under the grass. Only half of the park is open today. I‘ve always loved Sarnia, but I’ll never go back and I’m grateful and extremely lucky that I never stayed. I’d be dead today too. Just an update… two of my cousins died within weeks of each other this past spring. They were the same age as I. Cause of death - cancer. They were born and raised in Sarnia and lived there until their mid-20’s. The legacy of Sarnia lays in the obituaries of the thousands of people who have died there since the 60’s up to today.

    This is absolutely crazy. It's crazy that living in the 21st-century people of Sarnia is asking for their basic right and being ignored by Industrialists.

      I have been diagnosed with environmental asthma. Been living here for 40 years. When I leave here I don't have it. I use two inhalers, but when I leave here, I don't use one. I guess I should move.

    Who is this a secret from? Everyone in the area knows about the valley. I watched guys dumping 55gallon drums of ??? into the river in like 1993-94. They weren't even hiding they pulled up and 3 guys pulled probably a dozen drums off and dumped the contents into the St. Clair. This was by the Suncorp docks.

    I live In sarnia.. the alarms rarely go off. But we do have a weekly test alarm every Monday. I live on the furthest part of sarnia, closer to the chemical plants, and it is literally always flaring. And there is always an insane amount of smoke coming from there, yet they act like everything is fine. It disgusts me living me. If you drive near the plants the smell is a mix of oily rotten eggs, but my older buddy says it’s not the stinks you should be scared off, it’s the ones you can’t smell.

    Omg they say around 7:20 that they fined the company 800k.. that's not even a slap on the wrist for the multinational energy corporations!! They are poisoning this community and apparently everyone who could make a change is willing to look the other way. This is shameful, I hope we move to a greener future. For Aamjiwaang's sake and for humanity's sake.

    And guess what! There's a beach nearby where people swim in that polluted water.

    • @vstar7196
      @vstar7196 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wrong. The beach is upstream of the St. Clair river, at the southern tip of Lake Huron. The beach water has always been safe because the polluters (Dow Chemical, ESSO, Petrosar) were spewing their chemicals into the river two miles downstream.

    Lol it’s not the 1930s anymore guys. Sarnias cleaned up a lot since then. Not to mention that we’re basically on a peninsula off of Lake Huron. The winds off the lake carry anything that flies up to the outer areas of Lambton county.

    Kalamazoo spill whistleblower, John Bolenbaugh, points out that spills are lucrative for oil & gas companies. Once a spill occurs, insurance covers the costs and cleanup companies (typically owned by the oil & gas companies) are hired. Shutting down operations for proper maintenance costs money. Spills generate revenue.

      I always loved going back. So many family and friends. But today, I have no family left alive in Sarnia. All died of cancer. And of my friends, none remain in Sarnia. They either died or moved away to save their lives. My last visit was 10 years ago to pick-up my mom’s ashes. She died - of cancer.

    First off the current STEL for benzene is 2.5 ppm and seeing as the reading at the Harley Davidson dealership was 50.2 ppb any person in the area would be almost 50 times under the STEL and 9 times under the TWA allowance of 0.5 ppm. Secondly, you showed the light from controlled flaring and a sunset being refracted by steam. How can you argue for 'Fair Warning' using an example where a bunch of imbeciles can't tell the difference between that and a chemical plant fire? Here is a tip - if a chemical plant is on fire then you will see black smoke.

    • @garynickels1359
      @garynickels1359 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sun sets in the west video was recorded from the USA (WEST of Sarnia) Just lots of STEAM with flaring behind it lights it (good special effect) Yea 50PPB is well below standard . One sided lots of half truths poor reporting there's a story there but their missing it "surface news"

    • @xcali5066
      @xcali5066 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Nickels I know the sunset wasn't behind the steam but it would help make the steam more visible. Think of a foggy day when you're driving with your headlights on.
