Proud moment as a original member of MDFS..My group originated the name, the discipline, the concept and the brotherhood of MD. Little did we know it would evolve to another level.
I am in this area, an OG snare player from Boston 93/94 and Cadets 95 and these guys always thrown down! Different style yes but they keep a balance of “show band” and DCI technical at the same time. So legit
Love you guys reviews, a fan actually. I am a former hbcu percussionist who enjoys both corp & show style. As you continue to do reviews like this of hbcu, please keep in mind a couple things. 1. Every hbcu line is different. One will not play or sound like the next. This is based on region, history, etc. Once you start hearing “SWAC” lines DO NOT judge from a DCI perspective, judge from a musical perspective. There is no right or wrong way to play, but as long as there is material, cleanliness, & togetherness. 2. As you were wondering “do they play this before or after games” not exactly. They were the college feature to the high school competition that day. In the spring, most hbcus are able to primarily focus on drumline, so more competitions, battles, showcases happen during this time. It doesn’t work like WGI however there are judges & awards at different competitions and/or showcases. 3. With most hbcus lines, showcases like this are comprised of different cadences already in their book that woven together for this show. However, this show is only 10-15% of all their material OUTSIDE of band music. This is completely separate. So that gives you a perspective of how much time goes into this. 4. Listen to feel. I love MDFS & they are really technical but what I love the most about them is even though they are technical, that internal groove never stops. That is something that cannot be written, you have to just feel it. And that is the overall culture of hbcus lines in general. Outside of face to face battles or competitions, we are here to entertain FIRST! You guys should check out their full 2023 PASIC performance. The instructor and band director gives great insight of this line & will showcase more of their material.
I’m so glad you are looking at fantastic show style collegiate Drumlines! You should give The Ohio University Marching 110 Drumline a look and a listen!
It is interesting that HBCU drumlines, particularly this line, have evolved into a hybrid of drum corps and their traditional genre, resulting in a new version of HBCU drumming.
Thank you for this reaction vid of the Money Team! ✊🏾🔰 Behold the Green and Gold! The Million Dollar Funk Squad has been doing this for DECADES! Light years ahead of the pack
@ Depends on what u like. MDFS is more DCI. Cold Steel is more showtime. Both have a hybrid style. Both are great drumming groups. CS is more entertaining and MDFS is more technical.
You’re absolutely correct. Alex Blake, marched Cadets of NYC, Vision Elite, United Percussion, Boston Crusaders, And The Blue Devils. And, I believe he’s on staff, or helps out from time to time.
12:21 yea HBCUs do have drumline battles after the what we call the “5th quarter”, throwing their best cadences at each other. basically just after the game and also call outs and small cadences during the game. basically just trash talk with their drums across the field.
Gas always been the best band in the land… they go to camp before the football team arrives and they train. I’m sure nothing has changed over the years, better look them up
Most of the good college drumlines I knew of from 15 years ago aren't great anymore, and so many of the HBCU showband drumlines have become fantastic. Are college lines no longer cool for serious dci/wgi drummers? Back in my day college lines were the fun outlet you didn't have in drum corps or indoor.
you should take a look at norfolk 2019! its like as if they got all the local i&e champions and put them all on the tenor line. "Norfolk's "Million Dollar Funk $quad" Percussion Feature @ the 2019 Band Brawl" - at around ~17:37 is when that tenor madness happens.
Pretty sure there is no tape or anything on the strand and what not down there just a certain head setup along with tuning is how hbcu drumlines do it for the most part
When they march they dont have 14 snares but i will say they probably let the entire line perform at certain shows...Million Dollar Funk $quad is the name of this drum line...i would recommend you guys watch them vs Cold Steel a few yrs back

Great show. MDFS and Cold Steel are the two best HBCU drum lines.
@@Avery-Mac cold steel is a wonder but are nowhere near MD I swear

This is why i keep saying mdfs is the best hbcu drumline period....
This group has had members that marched DCI Cadets and Blue Devils to be exact
The most recent member marched the Spartans this past summer.
