The Search for the Lost Shapira Scroll-- Was it Genuine or a Forgery?

  • This lecture, given Nov 9, 2022, to the Flint Institute of Arts, one of the Sheppy Dog Lectures, offers a summary of the Shapira "Dead Sea Scroll," discovered in the 1860s on the east side of the Dead Sea--subsequently dismissed as a forgery by most European scholars leading to the tragic death of Moses Shapira. We now have new evidence to believe the leather strips that Shapira bought from the Bedouin in 1878 were in fact genuine ancient manuscripts. Unfortunately, the "strips" are now lost--but we have high hopes of finding them. Here is the very latest on the scrolls, their backstory, and how our Quest is going to recover them and have them tested scientifically for date and provenance. I am honored to have been part of this distinguished lecture series--and that it is dedicated to the beloved dog of the patron, Dr. Alan Klein, makes it all the more special!

This has been driving me nuts since you posted up a video the other day. I read through the hebrew of the scrolls (I'm a novice) and I'm seeing alot of repeat from deuteronomy down to the letter. It's difficult to decide
I want to see some examples of differences which show ancient Words perhaps not found in torah
Also, I think there may be clues in the way characters are drawn, but I don't know minute details of the paleo script

Look at Dershowitz's article and book...academia.edu, free download. Lots of differences pointed out, that make it really stand out. It is not pulled from our MT for sure.

@@JamesTaborVideos thank you. I'd really like to think this mythology that holds so much sway over civilization has some shreds of truth (events actually occurred) and a condensed law really appeals to me whether or not "moses" actually wrote it
Last spring I had a kid goat that I bottle raised and the others rejected her. She would cry and cry when left behind. It got annoying. One day I heard her screaming in the back and nearly ignored her but decided to check anyway. A coyote had her cornered and she had managed to squeeze through a fence to avoid being caught. On the way back to the house it really sunk in that the story of the boy who cried wolf is definitely true. It's just a matter of when, where, what was the kids name, etc.. this particular kid is called Wendy. She's the only one who has a name right now🤣

It would be amazing if there a proper name for that boy but it's probably just another Wendy lost in the thousands.

Hey James , I was wondering if the animal sacrifices are included in the Moses Scroll and if they are , are they presented in a way that Yehovah commanded them ??? I ask because I believe like The Ebionites , that falsehoods(tares) had been inserted into The Torah over time and even according to the prophets , Yehovah never wanted nor commanded them , so I'm wondering if the scroll can confirm this or not

Exciting, if it didn't perish in a fire somewhere and it's C14 authenticated it would be the discovery of the century, if anyone deserves to find it it's Dr. Tabor! Hope you will keep us posted

i suspect the guys that dismissed it as a forgery were doing it on purpose to supress the price out of jealousy perhaps and maybe they wanted to buy it for cheap to hold it for a later time when they would deem it real and profit from it. maybe they didnt survive to play it out but someone does have it and i think it will surface when the hype gets high enough. this is just my speculation on some possible scenarios

Shapira was caught forging artwork etc much later. All for profit. The quandary is that this particular object may be authentic.

So because he had sold forged statues in the past that he himself could have done so without knowing they where fakes. It has happened where even great scholars have been deceived so why not he could have thought they where real at the time but was wrong. So simply because of that incident nobody believed the scroll was real. He was so upset over it he took his life eventually very sad. I believe this scroll is genuine & definitely needs to be re-examined!! What an amazing find.

No advice about this. Question without solution. What's important is the value we attributes to our interpretation giving our feeling of the facts. So Thank you for putting facts in light. Torah should have stand a teaching, not a written book. That explain why we are discussing the shape of the letters, and not how to get a higher level od Wisdom in God sun light.
