  • Thanks to Nintendo for providing the review copy of ARMS.
    ARMS seemed to have a lot of hype around its release, but it died off quickly. Let's analyze why by comparing it to the Nintendo's other newest IP: Splatoon 2.

    I think the big thing it lacks compared to Splatoon 2 is an interesting world. The gameplay is solid, character designs are amazing, but one of the things I love about Splatoon is the lore & Arms pretty much glosses over that.

    • @TechBlade9000
      @TechBlade9000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @James Vasquez He doesn't want lore like Kirby or Splatoon lore, he more so wants a singular player campaign with a story that isn't a repurposed multiplayer

    • @nathanielgarza9198
      @nathanielgarza9198 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that’s a big reason, but a bigger reason is if you want a good Nintendy multiplayer game you got this or Splatoon 2
      Splatoon is a slightly more established title
      People would know outright it has more content
      Advertised a little less niche then a fighting game
      I think Rtgame said it best. This or Splatoon 2 for the same price. Unless your a casual fighting game fan you have already a better option to get your fix. I am not saying Arms is bad, but Splatoon is more marketable

  • @UberEric
    @UberEric 7 ปีที่แล้ว +137

    While I do see your point in how ARMS released to little fanfare while Splatoon 2 blew up, but I think you're forgetting that ARMS is the first of its kind and Splatoon 2 is a sequel that aims to fix some of the problems people had with the first one. From the get-go, Splatoon 2 had an advantage.
    Also, I would argue it's unfair to compare ARMS' player involvement and controls to Splatoon 2's as those games play vastly different. One's a fighting game and the other is a shooter, after all. Yeah, you "move and punch" in ARMS but you "move and punch" for practically every fighting game. Splatoon 2 is inherently more involved because it's design needs it to be more involved.

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree with you, but a couple points:
      1) Splatoon 1 also had more content than Arms, so the fact that the sequel has an advantage isn't necessarily accurate, as Splat2 doesn't add too much from the original (or so I've heard)
      and 2) I did say in the video that Arms isn't worse than other fighters in terms of content, we're just spoiled because of Smash
      Don't forget that my stance is I wanted Arms to succeed, but I'm just pointing out why some would feel that it didn't. I don't hate Arms by any means

    • @UberEric
      @UberEric 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      snomaN Gaming totally see where you're coming from. Splatoon when it first came out was pretty barren but over time it was practically overflowing with content thanks to constant updates. My hope is ARMS reaches that same level some day and ARMS will be up there with the greats. They've been teasing a new character/stage on the Japanese twitter as well so 👀👀👀

    I've been kind of addicted to ARMS for the past weeks.
    Despite the flaws mentioned, I love ARMS and I keep playing it almost every other day, and it's pretty much the only game I play. I can have sessions of up to four hours sometimes and I just don't get bored. The thing is, yes it's a fighting game, so the game is always about... fighting. But look at Street fighter 2, it still got a physical release even after all those years. ARMS probably isn't gonna appeal to as much people as Splatoon or Zelda, but for those who love this type of game, it's awesome.
    In ARMS, every fight may look the same but it's not: at every new opponent, I have to learn to read their playstyle and find some effective way to counter it. Everyone is so different: with so many ARMS, a good amount of fighters and stages, the number of playstyles is infinite. It's even better when you get matched with someone that's able to read your playstyle as well, so you must keep on evolving, change ARMS and be original throughout the match. It's a game that is really challenging mentally, and you always need to be really alert to understand and react to so many things that are happening so fast. This is the feeling that gets me addicted to ARMS.
    I don't care if it doesn't get as much hype as other games, the game is awesome for it's core audience. I hope a lot of people agree with me.

      I totally agree. I think you have to play this game for a while before you can judge it.
      If you play ranked for a while it isn't repetitive at all. There's always new enemies with new tactics. I'm amazed how well all the different arms and characters actually work out.

    • @HessianPeel
      @HessianPeel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. Like I said in my response to him on another comment, playing ranked, especially once you get around Rank 15 or higher, becomes a constant test of your strategic ability. Party Mode doesn't really show you how deep this game gets.

    • @jhlc1235
      @jhlc1235 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, i have a style that involves not moving at all, and baiting punches that I hit through with a heavy. I change that by equipping 2 small / med arms the next round. It works a lot more than I thought it would, even in ranked matches.

    • @consume2870
      @consume2870 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said , but it goes a bit deeper.
      What fighter you choose determines your play style , for example a spring man is most likely Mildly aggressive to Aggressive (From what I have seen.) and a master mummy is usually a player who likes to lay low.

    A big part of the problem is that compared to Arms, Splatoon's entire design is based on keeping the game fresh. Everything, the rotating maps, timed Salmon Run, weekly updates and Splatfests, is meant to make the world feel alive and constantly give the player new things to do.

    I think the biggest problem with arms is its skill ceiling. I've been playing Splatoon 1 and 2 for over 800 hours combined, and I don't even feel as if I can competed with some of the better players. With arms, I had been playing for almost 20 hours and when I brought it over to my friend's house they started to fight near my level I'm only a few hours. I think the low skill ceiling is the biggest problem with arms. I would love to see a competitive scene grow around it though.

    I bought Arms release day. It was fun but did get boring really fast. In addition to lack of variety, the roster is just too samey. You can't really find a character that uniquely appeals to you like most fighting games and have fun mastering them. Unlike say, Smash and Pokken Tournament. Unfortunately, I'm not too hopeful for Arms' future. First off, in addition to the problems just listed The Switch also has several fighting games out and coming out for it, all of which have way more lasting appeal than Arms.

  • @LeisdogOP
    @LeisdogOP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    ARMS at least had functioning online compared to Splatoon. I'm serious how did Splatoon have such archaic online when ARMS had great online. Seriously the only problem at launch was there was no 3 rounds online with friends, which they patched in one week. Splatoon didn't fix its online in its sequel.
    Also ARMS could be an episode of good game design by itself on taking out the execution barrier of motions and advanced combos out of fighting games. Making it only about reading your opponent and mind games, the thing most fighting games players would say is the best part of fighting games.
    I love both games but I tend to gravitate towards ARMS because it just feels so pure in its gameplay. Splatoon feels like a war with a million things going on, but ARMS feels like a boxing match. Just you and another player trying to get inside the other's head.

      To be fair, it's not like Splatoon was getting much attention from the gaming world a month or so after its release, and people also had the issue of a lack of content and repetitive gameplay that you had for arms. I think a video like this would have had a better look at things if you pushed it back to 6-9 months after release.

    One big thing with arms is casual play online is random. I don't get to choose what game play mode I'm in. It's random if it's 1 v 1 ; 4 person brawl; 3 team mates vs a boss;etc. This just seems like padding in place of actually letting the user choose the game play they want

    Arms was a fun and exciting but every match is the same thing, the different arms and stages don't help mostly because they don't change anything and what they do change is more annoying (like the skate circle boards or the test tubes) then exciting. Plus the single player is just a bunch regular fights rolled into one. I think a proper name for Arms is the best non-addictive game ever.

    I don't think ARMS failed as a game. Like you said, it's a solid experience. That said, I do think the lack of content and variety is a real problem. I was hoping for big monthly updates for ARMS, much like how Splatoon has a Splatfest every once in a while. If the updates for ARMS were more frequent, I think it would have had a better staying power. Maybe in a few months Nintendo would release new game modes and content to round out the experience and make it more fleshed out (also an actual Story Mode is all I want)

    It was made clear to me that ARMS wasn't gonna make the cut after only a little bit of time with the game. The individual characters do not offer enough variety in play styles, and every character potentially having access to every glove actually reduces variety rather than enhancing it. Smash Bros is already a simple game to learn, but the tools each character has feel far more unique, even the clone characters in Smash that aren't the repurposed alternate costumes feel more distinct than most of the ARMS cast does from one another. Every character in Smash has at least 22 moves, every character in ARMS has under 10. The game has very little in the way of fundamentals that are fun to master and is more just a series of baiting and punishing. The fact that you claim to have found it fun for hours rather than about 3-5 games is the most puzzling part of this whole video. The emergent variety in how matches can play out moment-to-moment just isn't there.
    Worst of all, it's slow and boring to watch unfold even for the players themselves. No friend of mine would ever want to sit down and play this game with me after a single match. It does not bridge a gap between casual and competitive markets like Smash or Splatoon. Even Splatoon 1, with its lack of launch content, still offered an engaging ebb and flow with objective-based combat that could take on many different shapes depending on how the game was going at any given moment. I know this comment is harsh but despite financial and critical success, I see ARMS as a failure in every regard but character design.

      The glove argument you made is spot on. If the game had double the characters and each of them could only use 1 pair of gloves (1 playstyle) then it would make a difference. Maybe add in 2 fighters vs 2 fighters matches kinda like MvC: Infinite with the second character jumping in and all would make everything more entertaining.

      I agree with the fact that unlocking all the gloves for everyone reduces variety but the game can be a lot faster and involved than people give it credit for. It's an extremely difficult combat system to master but it's surprising how robust it is on a core level. There's also way more variety between characters than you claim if you practice using their unique mechanics. ARMS 2 can definitely benefit from letting each fighter have their unique ARMS only accessible to them as well as a few extra mechanics to build upon what's already great. I also wish there was a queue for normal couch co-op 2v2. The randomized pairing and randomized game mode thing isn't fun.

    As many others have said, I believe it has to do with the fact that ARMS is the first in its own franchise. Splatwoon had a pre-existing fanbase, and surely some people played ARMS just because they were waiting for Splatwoon. Among my friend group, ARMS is still popular and we all still have a blast with it. I think it's still too soon to tell how much of a win or fail it is since it's been just two months since its release.

    I feel like I gotta preface this as someone who has played neither of these games or even owns a Switch, but this vid KINDA sounds to me like you wanted Arms to have a better single player and have like special input attacks or fatalities or something to shake up the game play. And like I GET that, but I think the content Arms does offer is really cool. Unfortunately fighters focus on multiplayer, and if the base game doesn't grab you then you're not gonna play it. I'm also kinda confused by some of your arguments, like with different modes & weapons. Like don't loadouts in Arms function differently compared to other ones?
    TL;DR Arms comparison to Splat2 feels tangential, and I would've liked to see you explore why Arms is a failure to you.

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      So, the different arms do different things, but not really. It's more visual than anything. They all exactly feel the same, same with the characters. ALMOST to the point of feeling like a skin swap. That's what I meant by the lack of variety in gameplay. And I suppose yeah a lot of it boiled down to a lack of single player content, and that's why I said we've just been spoiled by Smash. The funny thing is, I focused on Splatoon 2 as much as I did because there literally isn't much else to talk about with Arms. I hit almost everything about the whole game.

    • @HessianPeel
      @HessianPeel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Wholeheartedly disagree. Facing a Spring Girl is a night and day difference when compared to going against a Master Mummy, for instance. One is designed to sidestep damage, hopping around like a rabbit on speed, meanwhile the other is a big, slow meat shield who's designed to weather a storm, due to being a heavy (hardly any knockback from normal punches) and having his health regen shield. That's not even adding arms into the equation. Different arms work better or worse depending upon your opponent's character and loadout. Up against a Master Mummy who knows what he's doing with two Megatons, while you only have two light arms? You're probably gonna have a bad time, since you can't block his punches with your own and the area his arms take up makes dodging, or getting a punch in around them, a tough proposition.
      When I first saw the game, I thought it was just a game where all you do is "move and punch," AKA Wii Boxing 2, but I realized immediately how wrong I was upon playing the first Test Punch, and I've gotten a far better idea about the depths of my wrongness the more I've played, namely in ranked. Once you get to higher level play (Rank 15-20), the game becomes super strategic. In Party Mode, that's not nearly as apparent.
      Basically, if you think all the arms and characters are the same, that's on you, not the game. Each character has their own distinct abilities, with only Max Brass and Spring Man being super similar (Max Brass is a heavyweight version of Spring Man, minus the mobility). Likewise, each arm differs in a variety o ways. You have arms that partially blind your opponent, stun them (making for easy grabs or followup punches), hurl them far away (distance is often key; get cornered by a good player and you're most often screwed), etc. On top of that, each arm has a weight, which decides whether either player can block the other's punches with their own or if they just go straight through, as well as a different manner of deployment (some arms have two part deployments, others move in an arc, others go up and down, others shoot projectiles, etc.).
      So, yeah, while I normally like your videos, I think you're wildly off base with this one, to say the least. There's just as much depth to the combat in Arms as there is Splatoon 2. Is there as much content? No, but you're comparing a sequel to a game that had already gotten its own content updates to a brand new IP that's just started to get its own updates. It's apples to oranges in that regard.

      Travis, as a person who played smash bros from the beginning to now and a person who played arms, and zelda games and many others, but not arms or splatoon 2. I'll tell you the reason why the game likely fell off. The game may be very strategic, and it may have it's own depth of complexity(I was that guy shouting how deep the gameplay could be at the reveal trailer), but the main issue with the game is that you can't see the variety of depth as an onlooker specifically.
      You watch smash bros melee combo vids from 2006 and you see people doing gimmicks to win, but the same character from a different player and you see super heavy risky play that turn out extremely well. And then you see those things across the board for every character. Watching a Mario somersault juggle is different then watching a C. Falcon, Ganondorf or even Dr. Mario one. The same goes even for watching single player games such as Zelda, because the action looks cool. It appeals to those who don't know.
      I think it's more so that, it doesn't look cool enough unless you are a god at the game. I've seen enough gameplay that people tend to rely on frost and specific characters a lot or they forget their options when playing. The lack of how strong some of the punches look at a long range makes it feel slower and more sluggish and anything that looks like that in a fighting game will throw people off. For some, it's all about speed.
      So I understand you point, but unless someone are putting up a bunch of high skill tutorials with examples, you can't expect it will have as much traction, especially considering all the popular youtubers who aren't consistently playing. But that's just me.
      tl;dr
      It has depth, but the regular player and non-players cannot see it or is appealed by how slow or boring it may look to care if it's as really as good as some may say.

    2:31 "But essentially, the moment to moment actions are exactly the same."
    I don't think this guy's played Ranked. The complexity in the game is crazy, and there are heaps of different play styles which you have to learn to counter. Once you've gotten past the newcomers, you see how complex the game is.
    You have to not only take into consideration which character you're fighting, but also which ARMS they're using (and on which side, even) and what stage you're on (in a way comparable to Smash).
    The new characters and ARMS (specifically that mirror one they've teased) are definitely going to spice up the competition when they come out.
    It might be lacking in content compared to Splatoon 2, but it's complexity is insane, and it's unlike any other fighting game.

    • @Theoszombie
      @Theoszombie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The complexity is probably why some people got "bored." They couldn't just mindlessly mash like most fighters. This is one of the best anti-mashing fighting games I've seen and I love that it easily weeds out the weaklings that are unable and unwilling to explore new and interesting game mechanics. I never got really good at the game but I've had a ton of fun. ARMS 2 is a must for Nintendo in the future.

    • @pmurtnidalaP
      @pmurtnidalaP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with you except for that last point. I'd love for ARMS to sell as much as Splatoon 2, but I think a major snag to that idea is the fact that fighting games just aren't as big a thing as they used to be. The heyday for fighting games was back in the 90s with your Street Fighters, Tekkens and Mortal Kombats, and it's gonna be difficult for any fighting game to match those sorts of numbers again. Shooters had their heyday more recently, so Splatoon's likely to turn more heads on that note alone.
      Still though, I reckon ARMS could outsell the original Splatoon if they keep the updates coming more regularly. It helps that the Switch is more popular than the Wii U was.

As far as changes go for the sequel, it's very much a splatoon deluxe (although completely worth the price, something about it just feels better than the original). Splatoon 2 is still getting new maps and other stuff in free updates along the way like splatoon 1, so I think his comparison is fair. Splatoon 2 has more content.

    I agree with pretty much everything you said. But I haven't even bought arms because I don't think the game at its current state is worth the full $60 price.
    At most it feels with how much content it has that it's only worth $40. Plus the mechanical depth just isn't there.
    Like you said, you just move and punch. It makes the meta feel static because while with this level of simplicity in a competitive fighter allows the better player to win, it's not the type of meta that looks like it can evolve like Smash4 and I hate that game's competitive meta, but the fact that it's still alive is evidence of the power of an ever evolving meta.
    The problem with arms and I can also stretch this out to pokken is that the mechanics are too straightforward and thus static.
    It's like cooking with only one food, one spice and with one cooking dish. You can make like 4 different things, or put some spin on those things, but that's about it.

    I've been wanting to weigh in on this for a while now. I've actually spent more time playing ARMS than Splat2n, and I suspect that trend will continue. All of the points you made were absolutely true and I disagree with none of them.
    However, they all work in reverse for me personally. What most people see as "greater variety of content" almost always strikes me as "more distractions." There's a lot to like in Splat2n (I'm also partial to Salmon Run), but to me it's a bloated game built on a core that isn't as engaging as ARMS'.
    Again, most people will pick a shooter over a fighter any day, but to me ARMS is just way more enjoyable at its core than Splat2n, which means no amount of extra content is going to make Splat2n the better game (for me).
    I really enjoy both games, but I don't blame people for prioritizing Splat2n over ARMS. For me, though, ARMS is the more enjoyable game, no contest.
    Plus. Local multiplayer on one Switch. Just saying.

    ARMS succeeded business wise but failed as a game. It was a day one buy for me and I played it for like 10 hours. But there is one major difference between smash and arms, and it's not the fact that smash is a 2 fighter with a lot of characters and arms isn't. It's the fact there is nothing to "learn". Nintendo pretty much explained everything in trailers. Grab beats shield, shield beats punch, and punch beats grab.
    But what about the elemental abilities? The abilities are so linear even a child could understand them within an hour of play time. Some of the best tactics in ARMS don't even require the use of your rush attack to utterly demolish the opponent. There are no combos, so it doesn't even feel like a true fighting game.
    And no, I'm not saying this because I'm too used to smash. All of the fighting games that I've liked, and are actually fun to play, have some sort of way to do combo's, or unique moves that only that character has. Arms has none of that, the only thing you could call "unique" about ARMS characters is the fact that each character has their own ability.

    • @FlmDownBrst

    • @UmbreonGamingatYT
      @UmbreonGamingatYT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know all of that stuff and then some, but you did confuse me with those names. I played the test punch, and I learned the in's and out's of both Helix and Kid Cobra. The tips and tricks menu was one of the first things I checked and read every tip, the "insta counter" was the only thing I didn't know from that menu.
      This technique I learned from a match against a really good min min...
      I call it the Minmin Icedragon Lock, which basically guarantees a few punches and a grab. The Idea is to set the ice dragon arm to her left slot, and then charge it after a dash. After that all you need to do is ensure you get a solid hit on your opponent with the ice dragon, and keep hitting them with said ice dragon until they shield, then you grab before they can react.
      That match inspired me to find other "combos" such as the fact you can stun-lock a master mummy then follow-up with a double hit or a grab with a charged seekie (stun elemental)
      The game is basic, there is nothing fun about it once you learn some decent tricks. Widegrab for kid cobra and overall shield coverage. Rush attack a ninjara when his shield is up. Wait until ribbon girl is decending to the ground before using attacks or grabs. Once you have a basic understanding of the different arms, then the game gets boring and repetitive.

      This. I've only played about 10 our so hours of ARMS myself and I feel like I've explored most of what the game offers. Not saying I "mastered" the game or anything, I don't even consider myself that good at at, but that's partly because I didn't want to get good. The system just feels too simple to me to want to sink my teeth into. This also creates a problem where people would find easy to pull off "cheese-strats" that are just frustrating and not fun to fight against. And even the "good" fights feel like they mostly just came down to luck or just waiting for the other player to make a mistake. I never really felt like I was fighting tactically. It could be that I'm just missing something, but I honestly don't think so, I feel underwhelmed by ARMS' fighting system and super quick matches. I experimented with different arms and fighters, but they don't change the game up that much in my opinion. You're still like the video said at the end of the day, movin' and punchin', which would be fine if it were more fun than it actually is.

And the Grand Prix mode the skill needed for 1-3 are basically the same but from 3-4 it's incredible how much of a difference it is.. and the sad part is the game is great had lots of potential but it couldn't pull it of..

      THELAW 34 I know but I don't want to play against the same player one after another and even when I'm not fighting a spammer it's extremely easy because the skill cap for many players isn't high so I haven't lost a single match for a few weeks maybe 30 so battles. I fell like every character is the same and you can play every character similar. That isn't fun because in smash you play every character differently and there are 50+ of them but in arms the 10 characters are the same. And I do like arms but I'm only really going to play it at party's where other people will play right next to me.

    I feel Arms is starting to die out. A lot of the hype surrounding it has slowed down because the mystique behind the game kinda vanished after release. It's a very bare-bones fighter compared to other established fighting series, as... All you can do is fight, and every character more or less controls the same. There aren't specific classes to the characters like other fighting games, and certain character quirks (Cough, cough, Twintelle, cough) have way more potential for interesting use as others. Another thing Arms sorely lacks is characterization. These are some fantastic character designs, and it's a shame to see them all play more or less the same, with little distinguishing between them. They're all fighting for the same basic reason- To win the cup and make a lot of money. I get that that's the joke, but there's a lot that could have been done to give the characters a bit more personality. Maybe something basic like giving them different HUDs? Like... Kid Cobra is a streamer, so have a stream overlay as his HUD to make him a bit more unique! It's the little things like that that gives fighting games their zest. Imagine if Street Fighter only had Ryu, Ken, Sakura, and Akuma as playable characters. Yes, they're all distinct characters with different strengths and weaknesses, but they're all based on the same core principles. Have Helix's punches go in a spiral, or have Twintelle's flow and swing around like hair or something, I dunno. AS it stands, Arms is a fantastic game mechanically that you can really dig deep into... But that's all it really has going for it. And there's a ton of other fighting games you can sink an equivalent amount of time with their skillcaps, so Arms really doesn't have much going for it besides the stretchy arm mechanic.

    Poorly constructed video. Heavy bias on the creator's part and the reasoning is very subjective. Comparing ARMS, a fighting game that is only 2 or so months old to Splatoon 2, a shooting game with an already large fanbase, is a horrid examination of the two's successes and failures. Let alone, there is no reason to compare them as they are completely separate genres with their own following. That's like comparing Guilty Gear to Call of Duty, which are both entirely separate and have nothing comparative to each other, with different audiences.
    I also feel like it's ironic when Splatoon players complain about ARMS being light on content, at least if you were to play it casually. Splatoon 1 initially was also light on content, and gradually got more over time. ARMS is getting an update soon and making characters and stages is more time-consuming than a new weapon every other week.
    (I did not write this a guy on Reddit called Mime-Control did and I feel he put across the main point very well.)

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I'm not comparing them because of their genre, but because they are both Nintendo's newest IP's, and splatoon 1 and 2 seemed to have more content than Arms, so if they want Arms to succeed I think they needed to improve the things in the video.
      But don't forget I said I WANT Arms to succeed, I don't hate Arms in any way

      snomaN Gaming The amount of content in splatoon 2 at release isn't comparable to splatoon 1. Splatoon 1 had 5 maps turf war and single player. Then after a week it only had 2 modes. No private battles or squad. The game only had about 30 weapons too. I'm sorry but, did you do your research?

If you have no opinions on something, find out information that doesn't involve opinions, and use it to form your own (criticism) that's not biased! You just love the game and refuse to let anyone talk badly about it! If you don't believe me, look up the definition!

    I wish ARMS would have deeper lore and a interesting story mode like Splatoon 2. I would have liked that ARMS had something similar to Splatoon's sunken scrolls, so that we could learn about their world and know more about the fighters and their relationships.

  • @cosmojerk6191
    @cosmojerk6191 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    No. No. No. no no no no NO. None of that, shame on you.
    It's clear why ARMS failed, you're just going way too deep into a simple answer. I really feel like you should've informed yourself better when it came to talking about Splatoon and AMRS, because all of your reasons for why ARMS failed can be applied to the Original Splatoon on the Wii U.
    When Splatoon 1 dropped it also lacked variety, since there were only 2 Game Modes, Turf War and SplatZones and the latter wasn't even available until a large pool of players got to lvl 10, yet, because the game was SO FUN, it kept people hooked and playing for enough time. They were playing essentially the same mode every time, but it was enough to keep them for the long term and ARMS is no different...oh wait, IT IS DIFFERENT! Because it actually has much more variety than Splatoon 1 by a LONG SHOT. More characters, stages, arms, modes, etc, there's way more content here than in Splatoon. So variety isn't the issue because otherwise we wouldn't even have a Splatoon 2 to begin with.
    And in terms of content it's the exact same story, in fact your 2 arguments are actually THE SAME thing, but spoken with different words. Tons of other fighting games also have the "problem" of having basically the same content over and over. You describe AMRS as "Jump and Attack", but that's literally EVERY FIGHTING GAME EVER, but to fix this they add more characters and different abilities to keep it fresh. ARMS is no different in this regard. It also has many characters, specific abilities, objects and gimmicks in the stages to make it feel different. Every fighting game will get repetitive if you play it for enough time, regardless of how much you wanna mix it up, so neither the content nor the variety is the problem here.
    The real reason for why ARMS failed wasn't because the game was not "good enough", but rather the poor schedule that Nintendo did when launching this game. Just think about it. AMRS was only 1 month away from Splatoon 2, a game that had TONS more hype around it because Splatoon is much more well known and easy to love. ARMS was a new IP, something that just couldn't compete with Splatoon. You may say that this also applies to the Splatoon 1 launch, but the difference there is that when Splatoon dropped it had no competition. It was released on May 29 and the next BIG game for the Wii U that truly mattered in the long run was Super Mario Maker, which released in September 10! Meaning that it had well over 4 months to be established as fun and worthwhile game and it wasn't overshadowed by anything else. ARMS however only had about a month, which meant that, even tho people knew it was a fun game, Splatoon 2 was just around the corner, and when you compare a new, weird looking IP that you're not sure is gonna be any good and then look at Splatoon 2, which is a sequel to one of the best games on the Wii U it just doesn't stand a chance. It was released WAY TOO EARLY and WAY TOO CLOSE to Splatoon 2, so it got overshadowed in NO TIME FLAT.
    See? A simple answer to a simple question. And no, I don't hate this lovable Snowman, but this video, at least in my opinion, is of your weaker ones I feel.
    P.S: Also, you're using Stick Controls in Splatoon 2...that's so wrong in so many ways...

    I still have a blast playing arms with some friends occasionally.

  • @GoodGuyPlayer2
    @GoodGuyPlayer2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    (TL:DR at the end)
    The thing is, that even with certain changes between the characters, you could sort of "mimic" a standard fighting style on Arms that could fit in most combinations. This is near to impossible in Splatoon 1 or 2, where if you take (for example) a Rank S+ Roller user and give him a Charger you'll see a massive skill drop in less than a minute.
    And Nintendo focused on that in Splatoon 2, making you step out of your comfort zone from Splatoon 1 by forcing you into training with various sets instead of just a couple (i.e.: Story Mode and Salmon Run) and with a faster 2-hour rotation system and four Ranked modes (instead of the 5-hour rotations and 3 modes in Splatoon 1), these make you seek for constant improvement.
    I used to be a pretty solid Rank S charger in Splatoon 1, and mostly used a couple of guns from just 2 types (Fresh Squiffer/any of the Zappers), while in S2 I've tripled the number of weapons I frequently use in order to reach Rank S in 3 out of the 4 modes (I'm still stuck on Rank A in Rainmaker).
    TL:DR.: Splatoon forces you to stay sharp and improve constantly, the stakes are higher, Arms not so much in comparison (still a great game tho)

    Even though Arms has sold very well, mainly due to extremely good marketing, the player base dropped significantly. They haven't released new content as fast as they said they would, and the game just gets fucking boring after a short session.

  • @rollingriver9321
    @rollingriver9321 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I kind of agree honestly. Yeah, sure they're different genres and all but there is a difference between why Splatoon is so much more successful than Arms. See both games centralise around a weird mechanic. In Splatoon it is Ink and how it effects your movement, in Arms it is the stretchy arms. Take those mechanics out of those games and Arms becomes a poor and dry experience, whereas Splatoon is actually decent game underneath with a legitimate competitive scene. This is why the original Splatoon would be played all through the Wii U's life. I don't see Arms reaching that level.

    • @isaacargesmith8217
      @isaacargesmith8217 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Genre doesn't mean people will like a game. Fighting games do sell in the millions and they are far from the niche thing people assume they are, at least to the extent people think at least. A LOT of people do love fighting games and here's a reason some of the most well known gaming characters are people like ryu, chun lee, Heihachi, morigon, and scorpion. Plus we live in an age where a game like undertale, a shmup AND classic jrpg type game has sold millions. If anything shmups are one of the more niche genres and classic style JRPGs are to an extent that as well, and yet that game's sold amazingly with critical acclaim.

    • @rollingriver9321
      @rollingriver9321 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a gaming as a whole discussion. This is Nintendo and clearly Nintendo operates differently from the majority of gaming scene. Not that there isn't overlap but your comparison doesn't hold much water. Just look at Smash Bros. it sold 4.8 million on Wii U and Splatoon trailed behind at 4.27 million.
      The way I see it, Smash Bros is a legitimately quality game and is why it is still just so popular. It too surrounds itself on a weird mechanic as well, that being there is no lifebar and stocks are taken by pushing your opponent off the stage (a simplification but you get the point). It's not possible for Arms to reach the same variety of situations as either Splatoon or Smash Bros because once you play it a few times you've played all there is. Arms is a cut and dry experience without the depth that games like Smash Bros or Splatoon offer and that is why I think its not "successful".
