I agree, as a young woman I moved away to get my social work degree. It was difficult for my portuguese parents to accept my decision but they encouraged me as difficult as it was for them. It was the most important thing in my life 38 years ago; I am very grateful they supported me in moving away while studying. My very Portugese parents sent food, snacks and fruit( pot roast, chicken, casseroles just ready to reheat etc. ) down almost every weekend. It fed my roommates and I and they loved it….I think sending food/snacks is a parent thing.

“First you give them roots, then you give them wings.” One daughter spent a year in Japan in college, now she travels there frequently. She’s actually flying there on Christmas Day. The other daughter lives in South Africa, and I haven’t seen her (except for FaceTime) in a year. It’s going to be a lonely Christmas.

I'm sitting in tears. Saying goodby is hard. I left home at 18. Did not move back to my home state until I was 50. When my daughter was early 20's she and her family moved away. So I know how you feel. You not have to apologize for taking a vacation. You deserve it. merry Christmas and Happy New year

I did a year abroad in college (13 months, actually!), and it was such a great experience! Congrats to Haley for taking that step. I learned more in that year, outside of official classes, than I did the rest of college. My parents were sad for themselves but excited for me, as you mentioned.
I feel like traveling teaches you more about the world than reading about it. Such a wonderful thing. 😊 A year away would be fascinating!

My son is in the military and was stationed on the other side of the country from us. He was deployed for a year and barely any communication. It’s hard on a Mommas heart , but isn’t it wonderful that our kids are out there making the world a better place ❤️

My mama heart sure felt all the emotions while watching this video. Our youngest daughter served a mission for our church. 9 months in El Salvador, 9 months in Belize. It was SO great for her! I was happy for her and all the experiences she would (and did) have. It was a challenge for me, but I'm so grateful for that. Hugs mama.
As a military mom, I have learned to say "see you later", not "goodbye". Your daughter is on the adventure of a lifetime! She will have so many great stories to share. My son spent a year and a half in Japan and got to do so many cool things there. My heart is with you and your family this Christmas, we know how hard it can be when your loved one is so far away. This is what I did for my Airman and continue to do with my brother (also an Airman). We never say goodbye. Only take care or see you later.
I was a bawling mess when my son got his first apartment across town. He surprised me the next day by showing up back at home for a visit while I sat outside all by myself with the dog. Its so hard, but we all know its part of the whole growing up and moving out phase that we experience with out kids. I 💯 feel your pain. My daughter went to college in Alabama this past May. We drove her there from Texas, pulling her car.
On the way home, I cried from the moment we hugged goodbye until we reached Louisiana 😂

I personally collect a box all month of things that remind me of her or that I know she loves and I send it to her in a usps if it fits, it ships box. She's always surprised and happy and it keeps us connected. ❤

Lol we had a phone in our dorms and apts.
When I was stationed at Clark AFB Philippines it was 1978. No cell 📲. It took 2 weeks to get a letter from the States. I was 19. I remember one time I had to wait longer than 2 weeks for the letter from Mom. I was so upset. It was hard being away from home, but it was also good. An experience I'll never forget.
My son is at a local college, and my brother who's in a city across the country keeps suggesting that my son transfer to the university in their city since my son could live rent free with their family. I keep LOUDLY shushing my brother! 😂

I will say that my mission was the first time I was away from my family for the holidays and it was the best Christmas. I had so much fun, and when I worked at the MTC after, I could see that they made Christmas great for the ones in the mtc too. Wherever she is, she’s going to have a great time 😊

Oh my goodness, I was crying through this video. Thank you for sharing it and love she is having adventures. This is what we want our kids to do. Travelled to the USA from eastern Europe to study for 10 months, at the age of 17! Was it brave, oh, yes! Was it great, oh, yes! Was it heatbreaking, oh, yes! Was it the greatest adventure, definitely yesss! 25 years ago, Contact via mail, rarely phone, but I’d do it again!

She came back and completed her final year in VA and then when the scurge shut the world down, she went back to Korea to teach English. Haley, travel as much as you can while away and don't stop. Explore the world while you can!

@@christinewallace9251 it’s pretty obvious it’s a mission. You go away for a year and you can only bring two bags with you. I’m sure it’s just because she doesn’t want people discussing their religion, but I find it admirable to give a year of your life to spread your beliefs. She rocks!
@@beautyequalshate maybe....but I think the two bag thing is pretty much a norm for young adults going overseas for a season, for whatever reason! I don't think it's more connected to missions travel than anything else haha. The cost of bringing any more than that is so high for a short term temporary trip!

After taking my youngest daughter to college, I bawled the whole three hours back home!! For several years it was just us two!
I went home to an empty home & it sucked for me but so exciting for her!!
I didn’t go to college because I was the youngest, my mom had Multiple Sclerosis, my dad left her, and my two older siblings lived a few states away!!
I was the only one she had!!
I was also diagnosed with MS in 2003 when she was only five!! I always told her I’d be fine & her future was far more important!
I hope Hayley has a wonderful time where she is. I'm sure she's going to learn a lot.

Even though I was a Marine daughter and an Army wife...sending two of my sons to basic, and then "the sandbox"...I sobbed for days...On the plus side, when they left for basic they didnt have to pack (they can take nothing with them) and when they got stationed where ever ...either we packed and sent their stuff, or stored it because they couldnt have it where they were.

Christine, if it is a mission, it's so much better now than it was 10 years ago now that you can video chat and call almost any day. Before it was letter/email once a week and phone call twice a year. So hard! Know that God will protect her, mission or not. 😊
