Just a little history for you; the 8171 GP10 is an ex-Illinois Central Gulf (I think she was an ex GM&O) unit that once saw service here in Indianapolis, Indiana. The unit had the distinction of pulling a Christmas Train with a good friend of mine dressed as Santa in the right-hand seat. The 8171 also traveled the main line on ocassion from Champaign-Urbana to Chicago. You made my day! Thanks for letting me know she still survives - at least for right now.
I'm not a huge fan of leasing companies, but NRE does make good strides. What class 1s view as "junk" NRE sees as valuable assets, even if they are rebuilt as gensets. Nothing is wasted, parts locomotives go toward refurbishing other units: none die in vain. True, gensets are stupid for long distance trains, but a few smaller engines on one of those GP9 bodies would work well, they can even save most of the shell.
Really. No offense, but I think they could have made an effort to preserved Metra 610 considering that their are only 2 of that class of locomotive left.
The SP Geeps probably booked it up Tehachapi too. I've been driving by this facility since I was born and I still recognize some of the units here so yeah, some of the power has been hanging around for awhile.
Does NRE still give permission for folks like us just wanting to capture history in the lens while they still exist access to their properties? I REALLY need to get to their many shops and get as many shots of the goodies as I can before they're gone or too deteriorated to tell which is which. lol.
what are the NS C38-8's(?) doing there, they can't be that old? none of that stuff works does it? they've all come to die. Although it's a nice collection of motive power. nice video
Can you tell some of those locomotives haven't been moved in awhile? You know it's been awhile when you see vegetation overtaking the spot where the locomotives are sitting. I bet you anything the SP high nosed GP7 there worked the Siskoyou Line in Northern California at one time. When you see international locomotives you know a facility like that one even if it is a little run down is known throughout the world. Cleanest untit not getting rust was Metra there.
I'm not the first to put a video from Dixmoor up here. EJE665 has one and I'm sure if you look around, you'll find more. There's also plenty of photos from here on the railpictures and rrpicturearchives websites, among others. If my video alone did something, thats pretty ridiculous.
David Kamptner most were retired or scrapped, but two remain on Metra property and are used during the winter when locomotives break down or when units are out for rebuild.
You may have signed in at the door, but you have done something to piss them off. Now all railfans are banned! I dont understand why the younger railbuffs have to put everything on here? What is the big deal? Why cant you keep your vidios at home? Keep up the good work Frank....soon we all will banned from every aspect of railroading....very soon!

I’m pretty sure it’s has been scrapped
they should really consider turning this into a railroad museum
INDEED.
Yea, they should
Everything here has been either moved or scrapped, the facility recently shut down
Yesss
@@77_trains I just wished they wouldn't scrapped good locomotive's that deserved to be restored before they shut down.

Metra 610 has now been scrapped
RIP
The Korean Alco is an RS8 it was repowered with an EMD engine. Awesome video!!
Really cool stuff there... It's surprising that they'll let whoever roam around. I think that's really neat. ;-) I'd love to go there one day. *****
It's not getting scrapped. It was sold to NREX and may be returned to Metra.
The SP Geeps probably booked it up Tehachapi too. I've been driving by this facility since I was born and I still recognize some of the units here so yeah, some of the power has been hanging around for awhile.
Was that an old Frisco behind the Santa Fe unit? This vid really makes me want to buy one and put it in the front yard lol. Nice vid again Frank.
Another fine catch, Frank...keep up the good work.
Those very interesting locomotives 🚂
Should send 610 to the Illinois Railway Museum to keep it preserved and running for excursions!!!!
Wow, those are awesome locomovites 😁

Cool I like the F40C.
NRE does everything from rebuilding, scrapping, leasing, and selling locomotives. They even build their own prototypes from the ground up.
cool video!!
I liked the footage of the old cop cruisers too
The Korean-looking thing has a logo that looks kind of like Amtrak!
wow they had alot of old switchers

nice video
I work for NREC in Mt. Vernon, IL. Can't say I've ever been to Dixmoor.
Can you tell some of those locomotives haven't been moved in awhile?

I'm guessing it's an old National Steel unit. A lot of the old SW types here worked as mill switchers
And to think I saw them leading stack trains on the Transcon two years ago..
3:47 O_o you found a metra!
It's a F40'c
@@bnsfbandit9807 those are rare! Sadly I’m not that rare :(
goodbye to metra f40c locomotives.
No. 2 are still in Metra service, 12 were sold to helm and scrapped.
The stories to be told
Most are built in Mt. Vernon Illinois
no i wont allow that bn unit to sit out there
That kin looks more like a scrapyard. Is it one? Or restoration shop?
Awesome Footage! 5 Stars!!
some of these gp7u are going for $68,000 plus shipping
Well then, glad I can help! The future and demise of many of these units remains uncertain, especially with the economy being the way it is.
why is everybody giving you B.S. about this? this is a intersting video and thanks for posting it!
I dont think that ns 8610 is on the ns roster anymore.
Why don't they gather up that scrap metal that appears to be laying around all over he place and turn it into cash?
They need to hire a summer kid and give him a weed wacker to cut down the brush and weeds.
Is 8601- an early dash-8 Camelback GE
what was the number of the cn switcher beside the #21
ok
i thought i heard that it was getting scrapped!
Hey,
Is this were all the Genset's are made? Cool video!
this is a really nice vid forget what those other guys said
Yeah back in June. If that was the issue, all this would have happened then.
reminds me of the LTEX locomotive yard in mcdonald ohio.
@MrJboog1
An Alco export DL532B (RS8) re-powered in Korea with an EMD 8-V-645E.
what kind of engine is atsf 2024?
I really like your videos, Frank. Why don't you upload them in HD?
Will any of these classics run again?
Chase Freeman it's highly unlikely. I'm thinking of purchasing one or two oldies and restoring them.
They might, but they'll be rebuilt.
I say get the f40 c and keep the metra colors but add a different name
Anyone know what happend to the Metra F40C's or where they are now?
David Kamptner most were retired or scrapped, but two remain on Metra property and are used during the winter when locomotives break down or when units are out for rebuild.
Not necessarily, they could have just found it recently.
The Santa fa locamotive and red white nose

Anyone have any idea how much it would cost to purchase the 610?
$0 because it no longer exists. It got scrapped a few years back.
Hi, is it possible to visit this place? (Or to obtain an authorization)
Nope. And the place is closing down.
ok
why is 610 getting scrapped?
No it's not
Not all of them.
all of these locos will be scrapped and the frames and bodies made into Gensets
You can't get into neither of those though.
I'm going to go see this place
ns C39-8 WOW
is this a scrap yard
IRM should go shopping there.
how hard is it to get permission to tour the property?
I don't think they do tours any more. This video is 7 years old.
EMD GP7u.
thanks you, movies is good, 5★★★★★
Poor southern pacific
Yes, but you're the one who posted a video tour in side the shops. Which is probably a no, no.
