Gibson High Output Humbuckers: 498T vs 500T vs Dirty Fingers (orig.)

  • I always wondered how Gibson's most common high output humbuckers compared to each other...so that's what I set out to do.
All three pickups are in the same guitar, same strings, same distance to the strings, same riffs, same amp and settings etc.
The only variable is the pickup (and the playing obviously, but I tried to keep that consistent).
    The pickups are:
    498T
    500T
    Dirty Fingers (original from 1980)
Guitar: 2013 Gibson Les Paul Traditional
    Amp: EVH 5150 III
Cab: Engl Pro with a single sm57 (my IR in 2n Torpedo Live)
1 track on each side, zero post processing

I have a 498t in my Paul and have played all three of these and the 498t is the most amazing sounding pickup for medium to high gain I have ever played. The tone is absolutely perfect and HOT. Wylde style Pinch harmonics are easier to achieve with this pickup than any other pickup I have ever played including emg. It really lets all the strings come through without being stale or flat like ceramics or active pickups. Such a great pickup for classic rock all the way to the most brutal metal. I wish more people would give the 498t a shot they would be so glad they did.

I love the 500t. It's my favorite pickup other than the seymour duncan distortion. Or alexi laihos signature. I'll for sur have to give the 498t a try.

    @JACKPAVAL 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

That 500T had some kick ass sustain.
Much of the time the Dirty Fingers had trouble cutting through the mix on stage when playing in other than a three piece. Thats why so many players in the 80s always changed them out for Duncan's.,and DiMarzios. .Trust me ik i was there!
Just because they are a little older, and from the 80s doesn't make them great.
They weren't that great then, and they still aren't. But there are many other great Gibson humbucker pick ups available. And other hb PU brands as well.
This was a great comparison video, you did a good job!

I have 496/500 in my Paul but I also have a volume knob. 1 for each pup. This seems ,at least to me, to work with high gain. I make any p/u work in any situation. My other main guitar is a Strat w/ Lace Sensors. So my amp, a Boogie Mark, is setup for both guitars. Kinda a compromise of sound. With a 12 pedal board right there I feel like I can get whatever sound I need.

Have all, love them all. I like the sustain of the 500T which you don't really get from this video. Great for heavy distortion solos with long single-notes. 498T is my favorite for more open, gritty sound. Dirty Fingers is my favorite neck pickup. Great for jazzy stuff. Very clear and punchy. Really isn't right to say one is "better" than the other. Just depends on the style of music and tone you like. I also have the 490T and it's a nice pickup as well. The P94's are really good too.

Kept repeating between 498 & D'F, at various replay speeds, still find the 498's a bit more musical. 500T still a great ceramic performer if maximum clarity is uppermost factor. Thanks for a clear, uncluttered approach its vastly superior to the punks trying to be movie stars.

They all sound the same to me. I had a Les Paul Studio that came stock with the 498T and 496R. I hated that pickup set so much, it was one of the reasons I eventually put that guitar down and moved on to something else. I don't play hard rock or metal but I will give credit there, the 498T is a face melter for playing that kind of style and it can totally nail those classic metal tones from bands like Priest, Maiden and Mercyful Fate.

498 hands down in this solo guitar setting. It's richer, thicker, and more harmonically interesting than the other two contenders. I'd rank the Dirty Fingers next and the 500 last, with a complete lack of depth. It would be interesting to see how they compare in a mix, though.

The dirty fingers are the best of those pickups. The high output higher end ceramic humbuckers were the original pickup metal was invented with. If you to sound like randy rhoads or early metallica then dirty fingers and super distortions is the way to go. High output alnico v just dont sound like the old school metal. I only like paf style alnico 2 or high output crunchy ceramics like super distortion. My opinion.

To me, the 498T sounds the best. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between the 500T and the Dirty Fingers.

Dirty Fingers sounded really together on this video

I have three guitars with 498t, one with a 500t and one with a pair of Tony Iommi Gibson pickups. I love them all. I don’t have any Dirty Fingers yet, but that would be a good escuse for a new Frankenstein project.

How do you compare the Iommi bridge with the 498 and 500?

Great comparison! I'm having a real hard time deciding which one I like the best. I've got 500T/496R in one of my Les Pauls and want a slightly less high-gain tone in one of my other guitars that has coil splitting. Would you say that the Dirty Fingers set fits my application?

Oh and also, stellar riffage, bro!

Yeah, the dirty fingers should fit that description imo. And thanks!

Great comparison. Do you have 500k or 330k pots in there?

With that distortion setup I bet a Fender SSS Stratocaster would sound pretty similar. Very processed-sounding distortion.

498t then dirty fingers close , 500 t was too muddy for my taste... i have a set of dirty fingers on my sg (extra info... swapping out the shitty quick connect electronics

Not much difference between the 498T and the Original Dirty Fingers... they both sound great.

The 498t sounded a little fuller than the 500t, which was almost too tight sounding. The Dirty Fingers sounded fuller too, but I can't say it was better sounding than the 498t. It might feel more compressed as it reacts to your playing though, which the feel is impossible to translate in a demo.

Great video, How far from the strings would you suggest as a go to for the dirty finger originals
