Yes. Definitely it is SM problem. But many k-pop fans are company stan. They view a k-pop group is manufactured. They are not real artist. Of course there are small exception. If you look bigger picture, it is cultural problem. Korean are chaebol (conglomerate) 's slave. Chaebol have power to the politician and law.

I have always thought there should be a Korean Entertainment Union that protects workers rights, but do these young men and women hire lawyers to read the contracts thoroughly before signing? Same lawyer, knowing the contract, should be able to protect client from these abuses and future blackmailing. I must be missing something.

You are forgot about what happened to their 1st gen idol H.O.T. The same case with what happened to DBSK, that led H.O.T been disbanded and 3 members left and made their own group JTL. If you ever listened to JTL's song My Lecon written and composed by Tony Ahn, by the lyrics many have said that song was actually written for SM director who in 2019 also still wanted the money from H.O.T after their reunion. Glad this time they won. They still can held their concert although they should use High Five of Teenagers name instead of H.O.T and they cant use their logo. But at least now they can sing their songs again together.
Tony have said in one of interview from each 100.000 dollars they made they just got 10.000. The company even taken their blood and hair to created merchandise to sell to the fans. They also looks surprised when fans brought the merchandises that they bought in the past because they never knew about those of merchandises, means they never got money from what the company sale to the fans. We can say SM build their company literally from their blood and tears.

I was going to say something about it, too. Because of Kim Hyun Joong and how his reputation got tarnished by lies and how, when he was going through what he was going through because of the lies 501 and his company kinda washed their hands of him, his appearances got canceled, his songs stopped being played and he was cut out of things he had already filmed and was let go. If that is not being blacklisted, then I don't know what is. Also, there was another Idol who was blacklisted and was told they could not even perform under their legal name until so many years have passed, and their 15-year contract expired. Does anyone remember who HE was? I forget, but I read about his story about 4 or 5 years ago.
Sounds like SM Entertainment needs to give up on being an entertainment agency as many lawsuits they have had. If it was a smaller agency, they would have lost their business. To answer the question asked in this video: " Who is the problem?" In MY opinion, it is the Fault of SM Entertainment. For the reason, even after the JYJ law, SM still has illegal slave contracts to this day and if someone says anything, SM makes it a lawsuit against the idol or anyone under their agency, and it also sounds like they also use harsher actions towards non-korean born idols. Kinda being racist towards the Chinese and American born Koreans, and other non-koreans. It is not just in Korea and in The Entertainment business. I have seen it here in America and Korean own businesses. It happened to a family member in the martial arts industry too.

All NCT members have too long lasting contracts, SM saying it's because of the military service. It doesn't make sense because it's the same for girl groups and non Korean members.
It's messed up to force trainees to sign a slave contract in order to even debut. We don't even know how many former SM trainees were blacklisted, how many NDAs were signed and how many regular employees were impacted by all of this.

Thank God Shinhwa moved fast to sued SM in the past and took ownership of their name (Thank Eric for his study),, Thank God Hangeng won the case,, Im sad for what happened to JYJ, their talent wasted in long blacklist period, , and good luck for 3 former EXOs in their case

Maybe SM has just tho they could do what they wanted. Figure after the lawsuits from exo already sm wouldn’t of kept this treatment. I really hope a lot of these groups get out from sm! If SM is to loose NCT,EXO, SHINee they will go bankrupt! Heck just loosing NCT will do it and I kinda feel that’s going to happen. Man...K-fans have been saying this for years! Especially those have been following the genre since the 1st generation era. It's not a surprise to them.
H.O.T, the legends and godfathers of idol groups, still can't even have a freaking reunion concert under their real group name....all because SM was and still is a b**tch. For context, their counterparts like Jinusean, Sechs Kies, god and Fly to the Sky have all had reunions and released music from 2014 to 2016. H.O.T members were on the same page about having a 20th anniversary concert in 2016. SM was really lukewarm about it and they went ahead with the concert but had to market themselves as "High Five Of Teenagers" (the meaning of the group name) instead of just "H.O.T." as they are better known as.

loved JYJ and Hangeng parts but Tao's part was missing information (I'm saying this as a VVHL who's been following him since his debut): Kris and Luhan had to share a part of their incomes with SM which was different from Tao's case as he wasn't bound to pay SM any penny. Also all his activities are in China and he won the lawsuits there so it doesn't affect his career, he's actually doing VERY WELL there. Another important point: Tao endured the most injuries due to his activities under SM (as the member with the most sports capability he was sent to several shows that affected his health and was seen several times on a wheelchair, from back pain to a poisoned leg to a surgery after which he had to perform to a torn ligament and bone pieces falling off with which he still recorded and danced on the MV, music show comeback, concert VCRs... even though his doctor said not to move again and that he might miss the time for it to heal). This is the main reason Tao filed a lawsuit. He negotiated with SM 8 damn times before that but they wouldn't change, and so he had to leave to take care of his latest injury. Also the surgery he underwent before , you can still see traces of it even now.

This is really a form of indentured servitude. These companies are devious. They get these young kids in during their trainee years (some from rural, uneducated backgrounds) and have them sign contracts they don't have the means to understand properly or be able to negotiate. It's criminal behavior. And tbh I don't trust the Korean legal system.

I always find those 'lets throw shit at sm' videos/posts problematic. not because of the content, but because ppl always hate on sm only even though its a kpop business problem as a whole. by now I think ppl are too lazy to get their facts straight and only repost what others post online so the sm hate just increases. even kpop sites jump on the sm hate train and you will see the typical 'sm is the worst company' comments increase with each post. even the 'slave contract' argument is still popular since the jyj lawsuit. by now I think ppl just want someone to throw their hate at without thinking.
as for jyj, as far as I know their contracts was 10 years. but their parents strongly fought for a 13 year contract to be made. the contratcs were not nullified because of the lengths, but for other reasons. court ruled that there was no slave contract, thats why they made a settlement and agreed to a profit share. even if they could not be active for some years, they lived well just from the profits they made. so I honestly dont feel pity for them. yes, there were reason to nullify their contract, but they met a good end with the lawsuit (financially).
as for the exo cbx scandal, that just a big load of bullshit to me. tbh rn I`m on sm side, because what baekhyun is doing is bullcrap and mess around with fans. first he meets with mc mong (which is a highly problematic person). when the conversation gets leaked (in wich mc mong said he wants to bring over baekhyun &kai) he suddenly dismisses purching accusions, just for exo cbx to end up under his label 1 year later. like do they think we are fcking dumb? lol

I don’t know all the details of their dispute with SM, but Baekhyun is a slippery guy, he prepared a platform for his activities in advance, then created a scandal with the agency. And most importantly, he dragged the guys into this litigation; he needed a team for his arguments. I'm really sorry for Chen, but he's an adult who needs to think. I think Baekhyun cares about his personal career, he flirts with fans and does not hesitate to look like a clown at concerts. I'm sure EXO fans will soon realize that he actually destroyed EXO because of his greed for money, even though he has plenty of it. And more than his SM did not promote anyone, let us remember his leadership in the SuperM group and his happy face.@@aniangel07

Honestly, one of the many reason is because they already super popular before throwing a lawsuit. TVXQ are one of the 'kpop god' back then. International fans more familiar with Super Junior while Japan, China including Taiwan, and Hongkong more familiar with TVXQ. TVXQ could randomly throw a big stadium concert schedule in Japan anytime they wanted without need spechific reason and their ticket still sold out. Same like Tao, Luhan, and Kris Wu before jail, EXO popularity is very very massive in SK, JP and China at that time. Special for Jaejoong, he is really something. He tried another field like acting that turns out really good while active with JYJ, then build his own business and becoming one of the most rich celebrity in SK.

They're leader and maknae of legendary TVXQ after all. After JYJ left they still made it to the top in both Japan and Korea (Nissan twice and Dome tour almost every year). I think it's mostly because of the TVXQ label to Yunho. He once said that TVXQ is more important than his own life to him. If they all had left then there will be no TVXQ now, that name belongs to SM. In term of Changmin, he wasn't into idol life at all, not until 2012 that he truly enjoyed being on stage. They used SM to become famous, gets loyal fanbase and then sue SM and planning to take all money...
