Needs to be said...All of us need to fully appreciate the honesty and transparency Yvonne and Friesian Horses Channel presents. Yvonne puts it out there for all to see regardless of any potential negative feedback from viewers. Yvonne could easily have not included the difficult first days of the weaning process and just put out the videos of the " feel good effective results" after the fact. In this way we get to actually see the way it actually goes. As always, Yvonne has stayed true to the goals of this channel. To entertain and educate everything about the Friesian horses. Owning and especially breeding horses is a 24/7/365 job and is hard work and also stressful as so much to worry about constantly. Goed zo Friesian Horses Channel. 👏👏👏
Goed zo pake jeffje. That's correct, and i apreciate yvonne for this and all her videos. I knew nothing about horses, and following this channel and because of this also other channels, i will be an expert in no time. And i understand people to be worried, but say mad and angry things to yvonne and also to mods makes me sad. Lucky she showd already videos from those weaned foals before this heartbreaking moments. And i felt bad only looking them, so i know that yvonne her heart was broken. This because she love all the horses.💞💖💞
@@joannesmartens9442 Thanks Joannes. I am the same. I initially knew a bit about horses as my Uncle always had them, but really fairly ignorant. Though Friesian Horses Channel and some of my own research I have learned so much about horses. I feel I can know carry on a credible conversation about horses with most anyone. And Yes I agree with you about comments. State your different opinion if you wish but without judging or being snarky about Yvonne or the MODS. It is completely unnecessary
PLEASE UNDERSTAND I WASN'T CRITICIZING YVONNE IN ANYWAY!! I SAW THE CONCERN ON HER FACE AS SHE WAS LOOKING AT UNIEK'S FACE - IT'S A HARD CHOICE WITHOUT THE SAD HISTORY OF WHAT BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER TO BEGIN WITH!! I AM FEELING HER CONCERN FOR BOTH UNIEK AND RISING STAR!! I ADMIRE YVONNE SO MUCH AND HAVE A HUGE AMOUNT OF RESPECT FOR HOW GREAT SHE IS WITH ALL OF THE HORSES AND EVERY ANIMAL THAT COMES INTO HER CARE!! I WAS JUST SAYING I COULD FEEL HOW UNIEK WAS MISSING RISING STAR - I MISSED MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE STARTED KINDERGARTEN - SHE WAS THE YOUNGEST AND MY "SIDEKICK" LEFT AND I MISSED HER!! I GOT UNIEK'S FEELING AND LOOK!! SO DID YVONNE!!
Bless her heart. Uniek is not happy to leave Rising Star in the barn. Such a devoted momma. Their relationship turned out just beautiful. Thank you God🙏
I think the way that Yvonne weans the foals is one of the best ways I have seen. The foals were already ignoring their moms in the pasture, the mares didn't seem to care if the foals spent the day playing and not hanging out with them. After separation, the mares were not frantic - yes, they wondered what's going on with the foals & Uniek was a little more concerned than the others - but they weren't pacing or racing the fence line & weren't neighing in desperation. Day 2, the foals were eating, the mares were eating. Horses that are highly anxious do not eat. When they do begin eating, you know they are calming down. The foals/moms are not completely separated - which is a widespread technique for weaning. They could hear & see each other and consequently the anxiety was going down, not up. At their age, that will lower the anxiety rather than raising it. ALSO they are still in the same barn, with the same people - familiar sights and sounds. And as happens sometimes, the foals also look to the humans for familiar company. Great Job - and great that you are willing to adjust if needed.
@@lisajoyaslanis I agree completely. There is no one size fits all in weaning a foal. Yvonne’s willingness to change things up if need be is a testament to her devotion to these beautiful horses.💕
Uniek was SO good and well trained! You could literally see her struggling between wanting to obey Yvonne but also wanting to ignore her and go inside to Risey. Thats how you know she was so well cared for and she respected Yvonne so much. Uniek was so special
Who says animals don't have feelings and special relationships with one another? Uniek loves her little man and Rising Star loves his mom. That's obvious from her returning to the barn time and again to get him and her continued calling to him and RS efforts to join his mother. Heart wrenching, really.
They both were brought together at a particularly vulnerable time - a mare who had lost her foal, and a foal who had been orphaned. Many mares would still not accept another foal, but Uniek is one of the special ones with an abundance of Mothering in her make up!
No more heart wrenching than a mother dropping their kid off at the first day of school. It's an important step for both of them, not an easy step but it's good for them both.
Neither were ready… it’s not a normal bonding. She’s lost her baby and got super attached with RS. Now facing abandonment two. Both are… yes, training begins and Mommies need to be ready for baby coming.
It was sad to see Uniek wanting to go back to her special boy, Risey. These are the hard parts of life where tough decisions need to be made. Reminded me of when I had to leave my son at daycare for the first time when my maternity leave ended at 6 weeks. It's a difficult transition whether it be humans or animals. It doesn't mean we have to like it, it's just one of the hard parts of life. I think it's great that Yvonne is transparent and shows this part of a breeding farm. She could have skipped over this process and just showed us the foals being happy in the pasture but she chose to show us all the process of raising horses and I appreciate and respect her for that.
I also agree...the care and thoughtfulness put into this by Yvonne and the whole staff at Stal G is amazing to me....they are taking each of the involved individual horses and their experience of this into account and lovingly doing what is best for all concerned...we can’t really skip over the hard days we sometimes have in our own lives so blessings to all as we navigate through sometimes tough decisions...thanks for reminding us. The honesty of the horses and the staff is really touching and beautiful...❤️. I cry tender tears...this opens my heart even more in love and compassion to all...blessings always!
And as a teacher who has taught preschool thru kinder of children making those breaks, I can also say for some it’s hard but some take a very long time. I have one who throws up every Friday when there’s a different teacher fir an hour! Her mom comes to help in the process, but for weeks she threw up everyday. One little boy we had to send back home in preschool because even after a month, he was still throwing up from nerves and anxiety every day. Some are just not ready because the calendar says so. I’ve also seen some playing mom and making her feel horrible about her baby behind. I arranged mom to watch secretly to see she really was okay.
Anyone who is a parent knows how hard it is to let a child gain independence. It’s nice to see horses are the same. Everyone remembers the first time you drive away from preschool or kindergarten and you look in the rear view mirror and they aren’t there. But you know you will see them when you pick them up. At least they are in the same stable
@@marleneclough3173 I was thinking the same thing that it might be better that he is being weaned with his friends instead of by himself. Sadly, he will have to separate from them eventually though so he doesn't try any 'funny business' haha.
Marlene Clough That's what I thought he's not but what 5 months old . I keep thinking someone said before we found out he would be staying with stall g that he would return home when he was weaned at about 10 months old but maybe I'm mixing things up with another video . But I still think he needed a little more time with mom in her heart I think Yvonne maybe wondered that to but possibly she is worried about the new baby . It seems like Uniek had a very short time to heal from the still born I wish her well with the stillborn and other health issue and age I worry about her but I'm a pro worry wart not a horse pro and I'm sure they do whats best and safe . Have a great New Year !
So sweet, how Uniek refuses to leave Rising Star behind! Maybe a reminder, that foster parents can love their children at least as much as genetic parents!
It makes me wonder if this is just a little bit harder for Uniek and RS because they lost someone before. I don't know if they remember but horses are sensitive so maybe they do. Looking forward to more of the journey.
Can someone please tell me why they have to be separated? I think I missed that part. Is it because Uniek will be having another foal? Seems like RS was a bit younger than the other foals who were separated.
@@jmartin7345 in my view, even though the foals vary in ages a little, it is better that they are weaned together because they have each other for support, comfort and companionship.
@@jmartin7345 I believe they try to wean the foals by December or January to give the pregnant mares a break before they have new foals to take care of. Generally I don't think there's a problem but sometimes a foal maybe a little too young or just not mature or ready to be weaned or maybe the mare isn't ready to be separated from their foal just yet! The best breeders and trainers and guardians of these Magnificent Friesian Horses or any Horses treat them as individuals and evaluate each mare and foal as unique sets and make decisions based on what's best for both mare and foal!! As difficult as it was for all three of them - Yvonne tried to wean Rising Star so Uniek could have the winter break before she has her new foal in the spring. But it wasn't working well for any of them - so Yvonne did what was best for Uniek and Rising Star and her own heart - and put them back together for now. All three of them look so much less stressed and relaxed - and weaning will be tried again - just not right now!! I hope everyone knows how much Yvonne was struggling with watching both of her beautiful horses struggling with their separation and why she didn't let it go on longer than she did: she LOVES UNIEK AND RISING STAR SO MUCH - HER PAIN WAS JUST AS OBVIOUS AS THEIR'S WAS!! I'M SO HAPPY FOR ALL THREE OF THEM THAT THEY'RE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN AND CLEARLY VERY HAPPY!! GOEDE ZO!! MAGNIFIEK!!
I had a feeling this weaning might be more difficult for Uniek. This whole situation was so different, and after losing her original foal, she is probably more possessive of Rising Star. But weaning is unfortunately a needed part of young foals growing up. And I like that the foals are kept in small groups so they're not in stalls alone during it.
I have a bit of different opinion. The mares will wean the foals when its time on their own, so i am happy to see that yvonne is goving uniek and rising star the time they still need and doesnt go through with weaning when both mare and foal shoe its too early
@@ileana823100 I agree that it shouldn't be done too early, and it seems like it was for these two. Unfortunately I've seen very attached mares who just never wean a foal and have to be forcefully separated because they start dangerously dropping weight. I've also seen foals who play too rough have to be weaned early when their 'play' was actually starting to hurt their mothers (though thankfully this isn't an issue Uniek and Rising Star seem to have). So I suppose in my experience, it really depends on situation. 🤷
@@Caldella While all of that is true, that still doesn't mean it should always be a first resort to forcibly wean in most cases. RS wasn't even 5 months old yet. They didn't even wean Sanne until Sanne was, like, 7 months old already. (Why would they wean one so much later? But wean others so much earlier? Without specifically citing some extenuating situation to necessitate an earlier weaning, like any of the possibilities that you have mentioned or such?) The difference that two months can make is extremely obvious throughout these videos, not just merely in differing personality types alone. If you can see that the weaning is not happening naturally or that there is other extenuating circumstances like the foals being too rough and the mothers not sufficiently correcting it enough to prevent this on their own, then of course it is perfectly fine to intervene in the situation and force a wean when you might not otherwise have done. You do what you must, in the best interest of the wellbeing of both mare and foal. You could also start separation much more gradually to begin with too, rather than completely separating them in the first place and then regressing it only if anxiousness is too high for too long-especially when it was so obviously higher to begin with, but even more so when it was also so incredibly persistent as it was for Uniek. She obviously only ran past the foals without stopping, at first, because she thought the foals would be released with the mares too. As soon as that didn't happen, she immediately went back for him. And when she was forced away, she tried to call RS to come to her himself instead(not just calling out in greeting or whatever), which caused RS to then become upset and anxious as well because he couldn't go to Uniek as Uniek was telling him to do. The fact that different mares and different foals respond to the process differently is precisely why the process should ideally be custom tailored for each individual situation, in accordance with whatever best suits each individual pair's needs to make it as smooth and non-traumatic as possible for them each. Or at least that's my opinion on the matter anyhow. Much like how a foster mom who can actually nurse an orphaned baby is better than bottle feeding whenever possible...a natural/gradual decrease in drinking milk in tandem with a natural/gradual increase in eating solid food and drinking water is the best way for weaning to occur as well. And, not only psychologically-speaking, also physically speaking as well..not every individual creature actually does develop at exact the same rate either, so there could be a really good[ physical] reason why some foals might not wean as early as others, [especially internally ]aside from just psychological dependence. But you'd never be able to tell just from looking at them from the outside of their bodies. And the fact that these videos just keep saying "but this is how we've always done it for years" or whatever really gives me no comfort or reassurance at all. Just because something is done a certain way for years, doesn't guarantee that is the best way to do a thing nor the way that it definitely should always be being done. And just because foals and mares successfully survive the process without becoming so depressed or so stressed out that they just totally stop eating entirely or physically harm themselves trying to bust through fences or such also still doesn't mean it was the best way it could have been done either; that's an incredibly low bar to clear, in my opinion, and a much higher bar than just that alone should probably be aimed for whenever possible. But I guess maybe that's just me. At least they did allow the anxious mares to return to the stable for a while eventually though. Which I suppose is better than nothing.
@@ileana823100 I agree. My friends with farms allowed the Mare to tell them when they were ready. They kept the Foal safe during that time and everything worked out. The Foal still developed friends and remained on the Farm. So their Mares saw them everyday.
Yes, I cried too. I stopped eating dairy when I saw how they take calves away from their mothers. This is just as painful. I am. Glad they put the mares across from their babies so they could see they were okay.
@@GiftSparks Do as I do…find a farmer that calf shares and buy milk from those responsible farmers only. I actually help take care of the dairy cow myself. Her baby is still with her even after 2 years, and now has an 8 month old calf herself. Three generations on one farm. They’re naturally weaned & no harm is done in that respect. Factory farming is definitely more unnatural and brutal, so don’t support it. “Speak” with where you spend your money.
Uniek is a extremely special horse!! Mares never expect another mares foal, and especially without having the placenta smell on it!! Uniek instantly took to Rising Star and you can tell as soon as she saw him, she knew that was her baby!!
@@amberstamp1965 Yes, who can ever forget the moment they brought RS into the barn,Uniek was already calling out to him. Uniek already saying here comes my baby,my boy;so heartwarming!!!
I think Uniek and Risey are having a harder time splitting because they have a bigger connection to each other. They both went through the trauma, confusion and pain wondering and waiting for their loved one to reappear. When they saw each other they were at a desperate moment. When they came together, it was love at first sight. What a beautiful bond. 😢🥲♥️
I will be looking forward to see how the relationship develops between RS and Uniek in future years. I’m so happy RS will stay at the barn!! Aren’t we all lucky? I’m so happy for Yvonne ❤️
Yes, we are extremely lucky to be able to share these experiences..BUT...bottom line, it is not about us, but The Friesians...and a little red colt! Trust Stal G ..it WILL be fine...this is not Yvonne's first Rodeo.... Lisa 🇭🇲🐨🌏. 👑🐎🌟🐎💕👌👏🌹
It's so hard to see them separated. I was thinking though why didn't she give him another month. I know it's gotta be super hard on Yvonne too and she knows what she's doing. It's just hard on everyone including us!
My mom had a plaque made for me with a poem about adoption and one of the lines in it read, " you didn't grow under my heart, but in it." This describes Uniek and Rising Star's relationship perfectly. I know from the previous videos the weaning went fine, but their special bond just makes it that much harder for us to see it. ❤ to you all at Stal G from Minnesota 🇺🇲 love all your videos!
Yes indeed. First day of preschool, seeing that little face in the window calling, arhghhh...I wanted to drive to the police station and have myself arrested. However the pain of not nursing at all is so uncomfortable for any mother, human or animal.
Uniek is such a great mom! Even after having multiple foals, and going through the weaning process multiple time, she still does not like being separated from RS. It is great to see the whole weaning process. It is going to be so great to see RS growing up, he just grew up too fast! I can't wait to see Uniek with her new foal! Just so happy that all the horses are healthy and happy.

This video was harder to watch than the last one. All the calls are heart rending, but we know it will be OK in the end. That was brilliant of Yvonne to give us a glimpse into the future first before posting these weaning videos.
It is difficult. So sad for foals and Moms. So confusing for foals to have sudden change. Different paddock, can see their memories but can't be with her. Can't go to pasture. Stuck in paddock with nervous energy. Nothing g tk take their minds off this trauma. I understand weaning but it just seems that with some planning, it could have been a little smoother. Give the foals something to occupy them, at least for short periods of time

YES! It was Avery intelligent plan, which - with a different person,- may have easily failed...it takes a STRONG woman to take care of these matters...the heart may waiver, but the resolve is strong! ...and so I applaud this decision, whole heatedly... Aww Uniek! That moment she turned around and made a beeline to Risey, I cried for her. Just gotta remind ourselves that it will be okay, they will still live at the same stable and it's not like they won't ever see each other again ❤
This was a channel that youtube recommended to me based on what I watch. Thanks to Yvonne & staff I've come to love the Friesian breed. My area of experience is in hunters/jumpers in the US ( a million years ago) so the breeding aspect of the business is new to me. For those who have no horsey experience and are unsure if they're watching good horsemanship or bad horsemanship, good horsemanship is when the horses are happy and healthy (these are) and the humans handling them are happy, calm and clearly love what they do (again these are). There are a lot of different ways to be a good horseman or woman but to presume that you are now an expert based on a handful of videos would be wrong in the extreme. I love seeing and learning about different aspects of the horse business and I look forward to watching Yvonne & Team Friesian do their jobs even if it's mucking out stalls. It brings back so many happy memories. Sometimes the decisions a barn manager has to make are difficult. Our part (the viewer) is not to criticize but to encourage the team to continue to allow us to watch the day to day operations. Go Team Friesian!
Aww bless Uniek, she's been an amazing mother to Risey , it's so lovely that they came together through sad times. It's always sad when it's time to wean them apart, but it's all part of their lives. Thank you Yvonne and gang for sharing everything you do, even when you are all so busy. x
Uniek is a wonderful mother! Even though she is probally happy that there is no foal following her, she still is concerned of where Rising Star was. It melts my heart!
@@Sathyaana i wasn't happy the first couple of times i droped my child of at pre-school, but hey... it has to be done. And after a while it's all good and, Yes, moms are happy with their me-time. And i a couple of days Uniek will also be very happy with her me-time.
Honestly, it tears my heart out. From the beginning it was clear to me that there was a very strong bond of love between Uniek and Rising Star. So the breaking off is therefore particularly painful for both of them, even for the observer. But I was convinced by you and confirmed by your videos that you are doing everything to make it as gentle as possible. Thank you also for that.
Being a good mem is having to make tough decisions and stand strong through the rough parts. Even when it breaks your heart into pieces. Good job on being a good mem Yvonne. I know it wasn't easy seeing Uniek and Risey upset, but you stood strong and persevered knowing what was best for them, regardless of what was easier.
When I worked at a stable a few years ago, there were 2 horses, mother and son, that the breeder let the son go too long before being weaned. As an adult horse, he was unmanageable and almost unridable unless he was directly with his mom. She was calmer about it, but also couldn’t be separated by more than a couple hours if he was being ridden. They HAD to be put into the stall while they were separate for riding or vet visits or they would run through fences or kick down doors to be together. Weaning is sad, like when your kids leave home and start their lives. It’s sad, but necessary.
You teach them to take out one of them away to ride Early. Then its NO problem. If you Never make a routine to separate them a while per Day, then it becomes a huge problem. They learn that The other is coming back.
Every mare different but that Sounds more like they were horse sour sometimes they just attach to one horse, we had a mare her filly was 3 years old and still on the booby we did not let it go that long we got them from an old man who had just let them in the field alone for almost 3 years it was kind of funny because the mother was a 14.2 hands and the daughter was 15.3 hands so it was odd seeing her drink but they were fine separated for riding and stuff then we separated them finally for the first 3 days they had a fit but then they were over it completely thankfully in a week it was over so I guess we lucked out
@@lauralauren6432 That’s why it’s such a good thing that Stall G. already has a habit of riding the moms. In this way the foals already know what it feels like to be alone.
@@nightlyrowentree6047 I do think you lucked out! My horse’s half brother was as you said, horse sour, he had to be with another horse or he would become a mess and scream the whole time my horse was gone. I think there weren’t knowledgeable breeders in my area when I was growing up 😬
Yvonne, please know that we all knew this was coming and I like others are very interested to see what you do and how it goes. I appreciate that you allowed yourself to show this difficult and painful process from start to finish. I know that you will always rely on your instincts in meeting the needs of all involved. The mares are pregnant and they need to have their bodies back. Most foals are never going to like being weaned. Or most mothers. Inthe wild they are pregnant every year and the same process takes place Your sorrow for Uniek and Rising Star was evident. I can only guess at how much , if its this bad for us. But we know now that everyone is happy again. Thx for posting.
So funny when the mares didn't look at their foals..haha that cracked me up. Uniek really loves RS..the turn around three or four times..aww Bless all of them!
As I have gone thru life, I have always felt that all animals have feelings, experiences and emotions similar to us humans. This is a topic on its own, but why I had to write today was how much Uniek’s behaviour reminded me of my own forced ‘weaning’ when my daughter was 11 months. I had Thyroid cancer and I needed surgery etc. I had so much milk and I was not ready, neither was my baby. In the residential stay I did exactly what Uniek did - the coming back for another look, needing to be close, those nurses were tough. Uniek went into the meadow and I was told to go for a long walk, I sneaked back and was sent away…… so similar Love you Uniek ❤️
I think future videos will show that she will be able to live without him but at the moment she has difficulty to come to terms with the situation, which is a natural thing. It goes to show that she is such a great mother.
For those comparing weaning of domesticated horses to wild horses, our MOD Hennie made a great point…domesticated foals can be safely weaned earlier because lack of food and being hunted by predators are not an issue for them, so therefore domesticated foals do not need that protection from their mothers as long as wild foals. Of course people who choose to wait longer with their foals are not wrong, but neither is Stal G. Just different. Also about comments that separations should be done gradually in short increments…it is. Remember, the foals are left in the stalls while mems are ridden, groomed, see farrier, etc. Uniek has even left Stal G at least twice while Risey stayed behind. The foals are not separated until they are independent in the pasture and are barely nursing. So they are not separated abruptly as some have accused.🧡🧡
Well done Shelly. It is important to apply good reasoning when comparing wild horses and domestic. Availability of adequate food and survival instincts of the herd play a huge role for the wild mares. Obviously if food is plentiful, the foals well developed and the environment free from predators, a wild mare will be inclined to wean earlier...and vise vera. Just common sense and laws of nature.
I am assuming the people complaining don't own dogs. Wolves stay with their families for 2 years helping to raise the next litter or 2 of siblings before going off on their own. Dogs get 6 to 8 weeks. For much the same reasons you mentioned, they don't need to stay that long domesticated animals get all their needs met and aren't at risk of predator's and need to go on for further training and bonding etc so they can go on to live happy well adjusted lives. I am also assuming the people complaining don't drink milk or eat meat because I hate to tell you about the joys of what happens to the baby mother bond there.
Copy that✅I go with Yvonne's method..." The Dutch Way", as Linda might say, but by the success witnessed, I'd say that The Friesian Way, is decidedly good enough for me...and for the horses, after a short while....
Oh Yvonne, this was so difficult to watch but I have every confidence that you do what is in the horses’ best interest. Isn’t it interesting how many feelings we share with them. Happy New Year to you, your family and your colleagues.
Awww! Uniek is such a goed mem! Some of the others don't seem to care as much. This is all part of what makes the Uniek and Rising Star story so special - that deep bond they have.
It’s a heartbreaking part of being domesticated horses. Being true wild or descendants of released, which is what we have in the Americas, is a different life with different hardships. Sometimes foals are lost because stallions force the herd to move before the newborns are ready. They do this because of natural pressures, and because these herds are monitored sometimes the foals can be rescued and returned or raised by rescuers. It’s a different life with different problems and dangers. No matter how hard it is to see Uniek and Rising Star long to stay together they will be fine and their lives are very happy & good. Horses and other animals do feel strong emotions like love for each other and us, and like us they adapt and learn to appreciate new situations just like we did when we left our parents to be adults. Uniek and R.S. are still together just not as close. Yvonne does an absolutely wonderful job with them! And everyone there is so caring. It’s quite wonderful to see. Not every stable has so much heart! 👏🏼🙏🏼❤️
Yes. Thats quite different. In wild only 66 % of all foals survive the first year. And wild horses are rarely older than 12 or 14 years. But the mares wean the foals when its time for this.
Uniek , pulled at my heart on this one. It’s hard to watch how sad she is without her boy. I know it is for the best but it’s sad. Yvonne you and your crew are the best and I’m so happy I found your channel. I’m addicted Thank you so very much.
Uniek is a passionate horse all around. She’s passionate about her food, her foals and her herd. She seems to wear her feelings right on the surface. I can see why Yvonne loves her so much. I agree with Pake Jeffje’s comment below, if Yvonne did not have to be so transparent about how they do this. Kudos to her for doing so. Nonetheless the experience is😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 to watch. I guess kudos to those of us who are willing to bear with the uncomfortable feelings. I wish there was a better way but they seem to be handling it the best way they can. I’m glad that Yvonne is sensitive to the way the horses are reacting.😭😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️
Agree. I have seen cattle be the same way. Cows moo for their babies and babies for momma. Its heart breaking but it's for the best. On my way to work there is a farmer that has a herd of cows on one side of the road, on the other side is the calves. They line up and talk across the road. It seems to comfort them.
@@susanqs5085 How is something so unnatural for the best? It's man-made weaning, not natural weaning. I used to know a couple that raised cattle as a hobby, and they used to wean the calves just so they could artificially impregnate the cows sooner. They used to tell me how the cows and calves would cry. I hated those stories. It's all about the $, not the feelings of the animals.
@@susanqs5085 I think we should question doing something so unnatural and distressing to sentient beings. Not just sit there saying, "Life isn't fair" as if it can't be changed. Apparently she realized it was going badly, because today she put them back together again.

That is exactly what The Queen did...and Rising🌟Star has always been a good " follower" causing his Mem some confusion and distress at the change....so happy it only lasts for a short while! Lisa 🇦🇺🐨🌏
Uniek and Reintje will be completely ok with this in another few days when their milk drys up, hormones, not just emotions are playing a part still in this first couple of days.. Same applies to the foals... just 'not being allowed out all day to the pasture' will be another reason responsible for some of the anxiety they're showing at the moment, Please everyone.. rest assured Stal G are extremely knowledgeable and well practised at weaning. It is the Dutch way to wean their foals all together at the same time, so no foal has to do this alone, this is very important, they have each other, their siblings... that they have spent as much time with as they have their mems, their own bonds become very much stronger through this period. We have watched the last 2 years of weaning and the outcome is always good, you only have to look at the last 2 years groups and see that all young'uns come through this and grow into very well rounded individuals... none of them suffer from anxiety separation past these first few days, because none of them are ever alone. All the doubters will see for yourselves over the next few videos.. Please quit critising Yvonne and Rein and show them the respest they deserve as experienced breeders 🤐
well said! Stal G is one of the top breeding stables and many wait eagerly for an opportunity to acquire one of their mares or youngsters - of course this isn't going to happen any time soon with Uniek or Rising Star as they belong to Yvonne!
Uniek and Rising Star is such a beautiful story. It is a love story for all time. The love they have for each other is so great and Rising Star seems broken hearted. The Queen doesn't want to leave him. It is a sad time.

@@bonniesuetrecker6273 i agree and that fact accounts for Uniek and Rising Star's reactions. However, it is my understanding that Yvonne was faced with a tough choice: wean now when RS will have company or wean later when he won't. I'll be interested in part 5. I think Yvonne is handling this process brilliantly!
At first when the mares left the barn I thought ‘wow…this is going to be easy’. And the Uniek came back….and then she just stayed up by the wire….and then she called out to Risy and my heart sank😢 But things will settle down and get better each day and life goes on…all children must grow up and move on. It will be interesting to see what connection there will be in the months to come. Uniek and Risy had a very special attachment from the beginning. This is why we love this channel! We all feel such a part of the herds lives!
I thought most horses were more than happy when their foals are weened to give there udders a break but I have only had puppies and the moms after 5 to 6 weeks don't want to nurse anymore. RS was never an arms length away from Uniek where as the other foals would wonder without their mom. When Uniek and RS figure out that they are still going to be on the farm they will be alright. I learn something new on this channel so thank you Yvonne for posting and being a breeder that cares more about the horses than how much money a horse will bring.
Thank you for showing the positive outcome of the weaning first, and now these videos of the process! Because we know that all is well, and everyone is happy. Viewers should know that you always put the well-being of the horses first and foremost, and wouldn’t do anything to harm them. 💕
She came back... like the other mares, Uniek was excited to go out to the pasture, but once she realised that her Star was not coming with her, she came back. And she was the only mare to do so.
The girls are doing a fantastic job of weaning. It’s a heartbreaker for the girls, too, but it has to be done. It helps the mares to have the girls working around the stalls and the foals right across from their babies. Good job!!!👏🏻
Such a great perspective. It is so clear that you guys do everything you can to make this process easier for the mare and the foal. From letting them come in some times to see their foals, to keeping them out to prevent udder issues. Even the thoughtfulness for the foals to see their mothers even if they are out in the field or inside. Such a caring method during a difficult process.
O poor Uniek and Risey, it's heartbreaking to hear their crying out to each other. Uniek is a really good mother. An extra special bond. And Reintje and her Reine also unhappy at parting. Glad you have put them in opposite stalls so they can see one another, I'm sure it must comfort them all. So many tears!
Is this the only time Uniek has been upset? I can't remember. The other mares seem "done" with it all. I can't help but wonder since she bonded the way she did with Rising under those circumstances that this weaning might be tougher on these two. Bless them both (and you as well, Yvonne) as you all move through this transition. Rising will be a big boy before you know it.
Makes you wonder, if she had something like PTSD from loosing her foal and if that made it harder for her, to be separated come weaning. But likely it's just Risey being the youngest of the bunch. The foals becoming increasingly independent (and the mares increasingly fed up with them) is a natural, gradual process, after all. It stands to reason, that the mare who gave birth last, would be the most upset.
@@oOKomuiOo except for Reina who's bit younger than Risey, Reintje seemed bit upset with the weaning as well 😢 The 7 month-olds were already independent and will be good calm company for the younger more spooked foals
Thanks a lot Yvonne for filming this emotional part to us! We know the foals must be stronger , and moms must be tough to continue their mom’s duties! I shed my tears when Uniek is walking back to see her foal. Very touching scene here! Can’t stop watching it ! Love Yvonne and teams , you are excellent managers. Love the moms, they are cooperating despite their feeling! Love the sad foals , they deserve big hugs! ❤️ ❤️
Let's all keep in mind that this is a breeding farm and Yvonne is an experienced horsewoman. The average age for domesticated horses to be weaned is 4-6 months but they can be weaned much earlier.

Yes😍
Mama wants her baby ❣️
Yes, she kept returning for him.
Priscilla......
Indeed, good that Yvonne is open to change, Should it be needed!!!
@@lisajoyaslanis I agree completely. There is no one size fits all in weaning a foal. Yvonne’s willingness to change things up if need be is a testament to her devotion to these beautiful horses.💕
Priscilla, thanks for the explanation. I know nothing about horses so your taking the time to explain is much appreciated.
I agree with Sue Zoo that your explanation is appreciated. Thanks bunches!
Don't rush this. Really. In nature it takes a year to wean a horse. It doesn't have to 6 months, I have weaned many horses. Don't rush this.
My middle name is Louise.
@@janetregan2382 my mom's middle name too🙃
They both were brought together at a particularly vulnerable time - a mare who had lost her foal, and a foal who had been orphaned.
I agree.
I know I cried
Watching Uniek looking for Risey made me tear up. She did not birth him but he is tied to her heart.
He is very young, younger than the others but I suppose they will form their own herd now anday nit accept him if he joins later
@@marleneclough3173 I was thinking the same thing that it might be better that he is being weaned with his friends instead of by himself. Sadly, he will have to separate from them eventually though so he doesn't try any 'funny business' haha.

That's what I thought he's not but what 5 months old .
I love the way you acknowledge all the animals, the cat, and the dog. You're very connected to the animal kingdom and that is so beautiful to see
So sweet, how Uniek refuses to leave Rising Star behind! Maybe a reminder, that foster parents can love their children at least as much as genetic parents!
I was so proud of Uniek. I totally understand her missing her boy. Weaning is difficult. Every day is one day closer to the good days
GOEDE ZO!! MAGNIFIEK!!
@@boomslangCAIt is said horses have long memory and that they don't forget. The know who is good to them and who is not
I had a feeling this weaning might be more difficult for Uniek. This whole situation was so different, and after losing her original foal, she is probably more possessive of Rising Star. But weaning is unfortunately a needed part of young foals growing up. And I like that the foals are kept in small groups so they're not in stalls alone during it.
Weaning should be a natural process. This isn't.
So their Mares saw them everyday.

i personally do not think it’s for the best.
@@terrishepherd3266 it’s not necessary, it happens naturally. Humans always think they know what’s best.
@@GiftSparks Do as I do…find a farmer that calf shares and buy milk from those responsible farmers only. I actually help take care of the dairy cow myself.
The love between these two is heartbreaking and heart warming at the same time. They will always be close.

Yes, it might be tough in the beginning but there’s no denying that weaning is the healthy thing to do.
Inthe wild they are pregnant every year and the same process takes place
Your sorrow for Uniek and Rising Star was evident.
I can only guess at how much , if its this bad for us.
But we know now that everyone is happy again.
Thx for posting.
Poor Uniek and Reintje. I half expected Uniek to handle the separation better than Rising Star, but it just shows what a good mama she is!
What a wonderful mother Uniek is to Rising Star, such a special bond. Pray for R/S to heal❤
Eine fürsorgliche Mutter , nun ohne Fohlen. Das hast du gut gemacht, dem Kleinen das Leben gerettet.
Uniek went into the meadow and I was told to go for a long walk, I sneaked back and was sent away…… so similar
Love you Uniek ❤️
Sure feel for you.... 😖🌷

Uniek really bonded with her orphan foal. Animals are so beautiful, they are so pure of heart. ❤️❤️❤️
Oh I cried to see Uniek so upset She loves Rising Star so much, and he loves her too! I can’t imagine how hard this was to you.
Uniek mother's golden heart is very sweet she does not want to move away from her baby, she is so tied for she cannot really live without him 🐎🐴🙏❤️
I think more so it’s Uniek being a leader and protector of the herd. Reintje behaved similarly, but passive Sjirke was not bothered.
I think future videos will show that she will be able to live without him but at the moment she has difficulty to come to terms with the situation, which is a natural thing. It goes to show that she is such a great mother.
@Visse264 - Definitely 😊😊.
@@Tenebarum True...The Queen and Reintje are leaders and protectors!!
Awesome post, Shelly!
Thank you.

Even though I know it must happen... I still cried. Uniek thank you for loving and caring for Risey he would not be who he is without you.
Gosh, so many different opinions on how to wean foals. And since we can’t be there to implement each technique, we’ll have to trust Yvonne’s method.
👍👍 judging by all of their horses we have watched for years, it is very safe to say they do a great job!
People just don’t want Rising Star to be weaned at all. Of course that’s unrealistic, as every foal has to go through that.
Copy that✅I go with Yvonne's method..." The Dutch Way", as Linda might say, but by the success witnessed, I'd say that The Friesian Way, is decidedly good enough for me...and for the horses, after a short while....

Awww... Uniek wasn't ready to let go. What a good mama she is. Even though it's best for her, it's hard to watch. They have such a special bond.
Oh Yvonne, this was so difficult to watch but I have every confidence that you do what is in the horses’ best interest. Isn’t it interesting how many feelings we share with them. Happy New Year to you, your family and your colleagues.
How is it in the horses best interest?
Hollyebn......
Very well said...thanks for that!
I knew Uniek would turn back for her boy... she's so beautiful inside out
Uniek , pulled at my heart on this one.

It's so sad to watch this 😞😥 but I know it's for the best. What a strong bond between Uniek and Rising Star 💖
What a great mother Uniek is! The other mothers left like, finally I get some time to myself! But not Uniek; she came back to make Rising Star follow.
That is exactly what The Queen did...and Rising🌟Star has always been a good " follower" causing his Mem some confusion and distress at the change....so happy it only lasts for a short while! Lisa 🇦🇺🐨🌏
It's a lot of work to care for horses. You guys are awesome.
Uniek and Reintje will be completely ok with this in another few days when their milk drys up, hormones, not just emotions are playing a part still in this first couple of days..
Same applies to the foals... just 'not being allowed out all day to the pasture' will be another reason responsible for some of the anxiety they're showing at the moment,
Please everyone.. rest assured Stal G are extremely knowledgeable and well practised at weaning.
Well said Karen. I just hope all the critics take note.
well said! Stal G is one of the top breeding stables and many wait eagerly for an opportunity to acquire one of their mares or youngsters - of course this isn't going to happen any time soon with Uniek or Rising Star as they belong to Yvonne!

What a wonderful mother Uniek is. It is very moving. She and Rising Star are closer than the other pairs, its remarkable.
Uniek and Rising Star is such a beautiful story. It is a love story for all time. The love they have for each other is so great and Rising Star seems broken hearted. The Queen doesn't want to leave him. It is a sad time.
I have to admit I shed a little tears for the mothers and foals. I miss my mom too!❤️

5 months was very young for weaning
I am always afraid of being kicked when horses are in front of me. 😬
They are beautiful creatures! 😍
This video series has created more tears than I would ever expect. It must be terrible on the staff. Yvonne bless you for your strength!
Thank you for showing the positive outcome of the weaning first, and now these videos of the process! Because we know that all is well, and everyone is happy.

*Uniek wants to make sure Rising Star is alright. She may have a memory of having lost one baby. She is an incredible mother. GOD BLESS !!!*
Get well soon Yvonne
She came back... like the other mares, Uniek was excited to go out to the pasture, but once she realised that her Star was not coming with her, she came back. And she was the only mare to do so.
...which is why she is named Uniek...because she IS..unique! Lisa 🇦🇺🐨🌏. 👌👑🐎💟
The bond is greater because she knew he wasn't hers but knew you replace with an angel.💝💝💝💝 Beautiful story🌹
Uniek's reluctance to leave Risey behind reminds me of when I became an 'empty nester'. 😥 Sad, but inevitable, a part of life.
The girls are doing a fantastic job of weaning. It’s a heartbreaker for the girls, too, but it has to be done. It helps the mares to have the girls working around the stalls and the foals right across from their babies. Good job!!!👏🏻
So heartbreaking to watch how they want to be together. Great idea putting them across from each other! Sweethearts all! 💙
Love these stories
It stands to reason, that the mare who gave birth last, would be the most upset.
the others are ~2 months older so that's why
@@oOKomuiOo except for Reina who's bit younger than Risey, Reintje seemed bit upset with the weaning as well 😢 The 7 month-olds were already independent and will be good calm company for the younger more spooked foals
