This is one of the most honest reviews that I have seen, thanks….it is not just me having these problems. I tend to make bound button holes on coats now, I can’t cope with the stress of the buttonhole function…
Bella I nearly cried when I watched this video. YES THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS! I felt like I was being gaslit by Bernina and the internet about easy, perfect buttons every time even on fussy multiple layers of fabric. My testers were perfect and I unpicked 7 or so messed up buttonholes on my actual coat. Unlike you I didn't get to a good one so I've hung it up and will revisit when my frustration subsides! Thank you for your honesty - it has validated me and given me hope. 💜
Great review. I have just returned from a three day jacket tailoring workshop and made bound buttonholes for the first time. I have a Bernina too and found making a buttonhole running up to the edge with thicker fabrics a bit hit and miss. I have not got this aid so will buy it to try but I’ll definitely be making bound buttonholes on my Freddie jacket.
I wonder if you put a piece of fabric- the same thickness of the coat - underneath the front part of the foot so there is even pressure along the whole length of the foot. May provide smoother feed of fabric. Similar concept to the “hump jumper” for thick fabric.
If you have another straight shank sewing machine, you could quite easily find a vintage singer button hole attachment, they make beautiful button holes with ease. I have always used one. However, I have never made a coat. They work on a straight stitch machine, the attachment moves the fabric from side to side to accomplish the stitch. I really love your videos, thank you.
First of all, your coat is very beautiful! I also have the attachment and have never figured out how to attach it. Now I know it will be fiddley, and perhaps I should do bound buttonholes on a coat like this. BTW, your patterns are wonderful. Thank you for the video.
Can you lower the pressure foit pressure? That might help and you would not need to to slightly push the tool. Thanks for the great video, your coat is beautiful
Buttonholes are the most frustrating part of garment making. I don't know a single machine that makes perfect buttonholes every single time. Picking them out is crazy-making. On a side topic, I just bought your Freddie Jacket pattern and am hoping for a full tutorial since there are a Lot of steps. Can't wait to make it up from my abundant boucle stash.
Bella, I had similar problems with the fabric feeding aid. The feeding aid got stuck at the bottom of the first buttonhole side and wouldn't back up to sew the second side. It made perfect buttonholes on flat practice fabric, but I wanted to sew a buttonhole on a narrow waistband with seam allowances underneath the top and bottom. I was so hopeful the fabric feeding aid would solve my buttonhole problems, but it doesn't look like it's going to help much on uneven surfaces.
Hi Bella, thank you for the video, it was really helpful! I recently bought a Bernina machine and was contemplating whether I needed this to help with coat buttonholes! Can I ask what machine you have?
