Basics of Tube Flies: Making sure that our tube flies swim upright

  • If you have ever had problems getting your tube flies to ride upright, this video is for you. Even when we think that the wing and the hook will hold our flies upright in a fast current, we can still see them roll on their sides. Tie your tube flies as shown in this video and that problem will be a thing of the past.

Great tip...just started tying tube flies but I haven’t used them in the water yet to see how they swim. Will definitely start all and finish all my tags on top from now on.

That is very confusing in that, you would think the extra weight on the top it would invert. I thought you were saying to change the shape of the tube itself. I believe you that it works it just doesn't seem it would. All the best, Sean

The effect of the shape is so powerful that it even swims the fly upright when we use a hook with the point set up. That puts far more weight above the centre line than does the tag ends of the material.
To illustrate how powerful this 'righting' effect is, when I was first introduced to tube flies I had a devil of a time getting them to ride upright. The guy who had introduced me to tubes, suggested a strip of lead along the bottom. So I added lead and in the process, created an even more pronounced upside-down egg shape in the cross-section of the tube body..
My tubes still rode tipped over. The force of this 'righting' tendency was so strong that it worked against the weight of the lead.

I thought this the standard way of tying. At least, when I learned fly tying, I was taught to always tie the tag ends on top of the hook. Besides cosmetic reasons, what would be the motivation for tying materials on the bottom of the hook in conventional flies?

When tying on hooks, from a hydrodynamic point of view, there is no functional difference where we place our tags as the hook diameter is so small. I always put my tags on top as well, until I was exposed to the tying of classic salmon flies where the tags went underneath. Look through TH-cam tying videos and you'll see lots of "tags on bottom" with classic patterns.
It doesn't matter with hooks, it matters with tubes.

Thanks for explaining. I see what you mean after looking at flies like the blue charm.
Anyway, I tried this out this tip a few days ago and it worked very well. The orientation is basically the same as when I tie the same flies on a standard hook. Should be very effective for coho this season.

Is a drop not round when falling?...

I was completely unaware that there was any other way to tie..

There are quite a few ways to tie a fly. Watch some videos on traditional patterns and see how differently the tags are handled. When we tie on hooks, we don't have to worry too much about how the fly will ride, but it becomes important for tube flies.
