I love that you talked about growing your flock through improving the flock and not just increasing numbers. This is true for so many things in our lives and many different careers. If you take the time and put out the energy to improve what you have, everything improves.

I wish more people would think ike you about expanding, too many think size matters, but it doesn't, I truly believe you are on the right way in making more out of what you have instead of putting more animals in, quality before quantity, and you need to be able to enjoy what you are doing, otherwise you loose more than you get, believe me when I say it is better for the soul and the heart if you can stand there and watch your friends running and jumping around for an hour, instead of you running and jumping to get them feed and taking care of, you have the right head on your shoulders, be happy this way, and wish Mark a safe trip for me, I bet he is comming back as a shepard from New Zealand hahaha

Sandy, I think the “sandy room” NEEDS to be done because you spend so much time there during lambing-you could get more rest, thereby giving you more man hours of work :)

A key part of that room could be a nice set of binoculars or video camera with closeup options available.

Thinking the Sandi lounge sounds like a nice idea. I also happen to believe you are right if you had that you would never go into the house.
Upgrading your equipment is a smart move, but you should also every once in a while give into your wants verse's a need. It is nice to treat yourself sometimes. You work very hard to make sure your part is being done. You can see when you have a mishap you take it very hard. Thank you again for sharing you life and animals with the rest of us.

I was watching a few of your lambing videos with my daughter and she asked me what happens with the stillborn lambs or the lambs that just don't make it. I wasn't sure what to tell her... she's six so she looked at me, and said in a very mature voice, " oh, I betcha sheepy Sandi (that's what she calls you) must cry when she has to do all those lamb funerals cuz you can tell she really loves the babies." Keep doing what you do Sandi, you are reaching and teaching so many of us! 😁😁🐑🐏

Hi Sandi, I'm new to your channel and I have found it to be very interesting. I don't farm or raise anything up in years now so just enjoy watching and listening to different individuals. The best part on this video was toward the end where you said if people would concentrate on quality rather than quantity....that pretty well sums it up truthfully. So many just want to brag how much and how big their business is without thinking about what their end results are. As far as your sheep farm if you enjoy what you're doing that's all that really matters. So a big pat on the back young lady, enjoy all the videos that I've watched so far. Probably have a lot to catch up on but that's OK. So now you have a follower down here in Oklahoma. Best to you always Rusty.

Sandi, first off, your VLOGS are wonderful and we look forward to each one! We play with a heard of about 30 goats, mostly just for fun.
We are binge watching your videos but admittedly we are still watching baby videos 😃
However, at my day job, I work for the USDA in SC. We administer farm bill programs to address resource concerns by offering both technical assistance as well as financial contracts. I was curious if Canada has anything similar to what we have.
In your case (if you were in my state/county at least) we could try to get funding for a waste storage shed to temporarily store your manure until (I assume?) it can be spread on crop fields. The justification (from our standpoint) for the shed is that it protects water quality.
We don’t do much (if any) silage production in my county, but I suspect other states have something to address resource concerns w silage.
Secondly is that if you were my producer, I would use something like a livestock health resource concern to try to add circulation fans to help w the condensation (?) in the winter and the tendency for heat stress in the summer during breeding. Our state currently only has the option to change existing fans (confined poultry operation) to more efficient fans (energy savings), but again, some of my confined animal operations in other states may have a lot more experience with this.
This is getting lengthy so I will stop. I WAS curious as to what sort of programs you (And other viewers) have used in their states/countries!
Please know you are a huge bright spot so many of our lives! Please start an internship for experienced livestock operators to come for an immersive month on the farm! You can build your Sandi-shed, and a tiny “bunkhouse” for your intern to live in!
    Cheers,sue

You are so right in your improvement philosophy. More is not always better and your thoughts about maximizing the flock size you have is good common sense. You just need the same energy drink your dog is using!

As a fellow sheep producer, I enjoy your vlog and I find it interesting to see different ways of doing things.
Maybe I missed it, but one thing I haven't heard you mention, is what you do with your mortalities? Do you compost them in the manure pile?
I also notice that you don't scrub up before going in to help a ewe give birth or give her anything for prevention of infection afterwards.
    Cheers!

I once heard a joke that went something like this....An old farmer hit the jackpot and won a million dollars playing the lottery. Upon being interviewed he was asked " What are you going to do with all that money?" He replied " I guess I'll just keep on farming till its all gone." 😏 I heard this when I was a kid. In today's farming economy it wouldn't take very long to get rid of a million dollars.😖.

  • @robynmorris2408
    @robynmorris2408 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you get the “ridge” fans installed and the chimneys reinstalled will that take care of the winter condensation problem too, or at least greatly reduce the condensation? Cooler rams in summer and dry sheep in the winter should equal a good investment.

BOBCAT FIX...maybe. When we were stationed overseas, had a window broken out of our vehicle. As we had an American made vehicle, and couldn't find a replacement window, we used a piece of plexi-glass in place of the window. It was difficult to cut (didn't have the proper tools) though we made it work. Maybe you could use that as a temp fix for your Bobcat machine.

I used silage and haylage from bunker silos for years to feed sheep. To make it work, a lot of silage from the edges had to be fed to cattle to keep the spoiled silage away from the sheep ration. I have gone to ag bags the last couple years thanks to your videos, and so far I think it has been an improvement. I think you had a video about dealing with listeria? If you were to go to bunker silos I would bet you would have to deal with more listeria problems. Its my least favorite sheep disease, pump a bunch of expensive medicine into a ewe and then they still die.

Oxytocin shot for retained placenta. It’s what we do with our dogs the day after welping as a just in case. Not sure if it would cost effective for you to do it that way. But maybe just for the ones you don’t see lamb or if you have your suspicions they have one. I’m not sure if it works the same for sheep but maybe something to talk to your vet about!

if you google concrete bunker blocks, they are in essence concrete legos. They can be used to make bins for the manure or whatever you like. Then if your needs change, you can reuse them for something else. They should cost somewhere in the ballpark of $100 ea plus trucking, but if you find a construction job or a concrete plant with extra they may just want to get rid of them. I was looking a few months ago to give a bunch away but the trucking to Canada from California would have been cost prohibitive.

Bunker. Having grown up on dairy farms I've used Bunkers, Ag bags, and upright silos. I disliked the bags the most. I found them hard to feed out of. And the plastic was always getting in the feed wagon. The Bunker was the easiest to fill (with dump wagons/trucks) and feed out of. especially for large volume feeding. There are advantages to upright silos. But if your thinking about just hiring the crops harvested Bunkers is they way to go. They will be able to fill faster with simpler equipment. in and out quick and easy.

Could build a ramp to let them in and out with.

Your Clostridial immunity is passed on in the colostrum so if your bottle babies get colostrum they should be fine. I do mine with Heptavac (in the UK) and do it when the youngest is 3 weeks old and then 4 weeks later as the bottle says. Then a yearly boosted 4 weeks before lambing. :)

Our County fair ground got those Big Ass Fans last year and during check in for goats I noticed the name and thought it was funny and of course I had to show it to my kids so there was a lot of giggling about it.

Krystel Hardesty Hey. I make similar videos with my farm animals and I’m not sure what video I should make next. Any recommendations?

Hi Sandi. I'm really enjoying this series of vlogs this week as it helps us get to know you better. Regarding the automatic addition to your handling system. Whether you feel it would be a worthy investment against flocknsize or not, think of the time it could save you. Why not contact the manufacturer, tell them who you are, your situation, and see if a on-the-farm demo could be set up? If you offer to make it one of your vlogs with a product review, I bet they be willing to work something out for you if purchase cost is a concern. Just food for thought. More and more companies are looking at sponsorship options for youtubers.

"that I would never come back home"....That's why my husband took the lights off my Bobcat in my big horse barn! Rather be working in the barn and stirring the big manure compost piles than watching TV. Love, love love my Bobcat!

We having a feed mixer for our dairy farm that chops the bails and it’s a patz too. Have you tried breaking the bale up with the telehandler before you put the bale in their, we tried this and it works well. But I don’t know anything about sheep so maybe you need it ground up finer than I do?

Double down on another barn to double your ewes, and add a 3 or 6 way sorting weigh scale.
