I just watched a video that CLAIMS you should use your Instar 4 and 5 as a food because that is the peak of protein, but not prepupae or pupae because he claims the protein content decreases while they are prepupae and pupae. This is if you want to maximize protein content, but I think it would be a lot more work on a large scale. Also, this is assuming what he said is true and also, I don't know how much difference it makes. If the prepupae and pupae had, ... i don't know the real numbers at all, but lets just say half the protein, but require no manual work to sort (using a ramp for automatic sorting) versus hand sorting 1 at a time, it wouldn't make sense to sort for 4th and 5th instars. However, I feed one lizard 1 to 3 BSFL at a time, so it makes sense for me to pick out 1 to 3 that are 5th instar or younger.
