  • VANKYO Performance V600 is an amazing budget projector, BUT after a couple of weeks of usage I found a lot of dust in it, so I wanted to make some fan filter mod. However, after watching some video about other projectors noise level, I think this projector is a little bit noisy. So I wanted to make it somehow more quiet as well.
    Timestamps:
    00:00 Before
    01:42 Disassembly
    04:10 Fan change
    07:15 DC-DC blower fan (8.5V)
    08:45 Fan filter
    10:10 After
    11:27 Comparison
    The changes what i made:
    - change the outtake fan to a "Noctua NF-A9 PWM"
    - change the thermalpaste between the LED and the heatsink (forgot to take a video about this)
    - some cable management
    - add an DC-DC converter to the intake fan (blower style fan)(set to 8.5V)
    - make a cut out on the side and fit the fan filter
    I'm not a GENIUS but because the fan on the heatsink is still running on the max voltage the LED shouldn't overheat and the blower fan can still move enough air to cool down the screen and power supply. IF you like to make this mod make sure the blower fan is running enoughly fast to cool down the screen to avoid burn marks on the protective glass or on the screen.
    (I didn't put any music under the video since the whole video is about less noise)

    Hey man, this is a really great video, thanks so much!
    I was just curious, did you step down the blower fan Voltage from (I assume) 12V to 8.5V just as an additional way to reduce sound?
    If this is the case, is the blower fan really loud by itself?
    I was wondering if it might also work to retain the preset voltage on the blower fan but maybe 3D print a casing around that place to allow air to flow straight from the back of the projector, I imagine that will still do a good job of reducing the sound, but there will be that higher airflow.
    Curious if you have any opinions about this approach?

    • @L0L0K3
      @L0L0K3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello
      Yes mostly just for the sound beacuse yes the blower fan is VERY loud.
      Your 3D print idea could help a little bit because most of the noise generated by the channeles inside the case and ect. but I think even if it's have a better case(like v630) it will be still loud just maybe generate a different humm.
      Thanks for the positive feedback I really appreciate it.

    Hello, thanks to the video it is very informative. As other people on the comments, I am planning to do same thing on my different projector which is Wimius K1. I am just going to change outflow fan with Noctua fan. I have two question actually.
    I am going to use 3pin to 2pin adapter instead cutting 3pin cables, do you think it is okay?
    Secondly, what do you think about put some grease on inflow fan bearing. Would it reduce some noise?
    Thanks!

    • @L0L0K3
      @L0L0K3  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3 pin to 2 pin adapter is good, just make sure its haveing the correct pinout. I don't think some grease would reduce the fan noise. The noise is mainly coming from how the air channels are made in the projector frame and of course from the blower fan.

    Thanks for this video! Awesome. I was hoping you could clarify some things for me:
    The outtake fan is 92mm?
    There is a 2nd intake/blower fan? Two fans total inside the projector?
    What mod did you do to the 2nd intake blower fan? Was the DC-DC converter slowing the blower fan down?
    Thank you!

      @L0L0K3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi
      Yes the outtake fan on the heatsink is 92mm
      The 2nd intake yes is a blower fan 93mmx93mmx30mm
      yes I slow down the blower fan.
      by the way the original fans are:
      the original intake fan is: songlian SDM9330B

    Thanks for the Video,
    Currently i have a Excelvan CL720 Projector, and i did nearly the same modifications like you.
    Outtakefan Noctua NF9 + DC-DC Converter with Potentiometer to control the fan-speed from outside.
    For my Projector there were also a video to change the blower fan to an axial fan, with modification of the airflow (cone funnel), but this damagen my frenel lens or lcd panel (small black spot on one corner). I was also looking for an replacement for the axial fan, but without results. But during my optimization i recognized that the most noise came from the airflow, and not from the fan itself. My setting is also at 8.5V in the winter sometimes lower.
    Now it is functional and stable since 1 year, but the resolution 720p is not optimal to watch pictures from our Smartphones.
    Thats why i think about to change my projector to an Vankyo V630, because its a cheap Fullhd projector with the possibility to reduce the noise.
    Does anybody have problems after the modification?

      I use it often for long gaming nights and movie afternoons, no issue at all but I live in the UK, the average temperature is very low. But I made a temperature test video and I think its still cool enough after the mod so it should survive warmer summer days.

    Is it possible to remove the blower fan and replace it with a regular fan? I suppose in order to do this you would need to cut a hole in the side of the projector so the airflow is in the same direction. I’m not sure if a regular fan would produce enough airflow to keep everything cool. If it did, then that may be a great way to remove a significant amount of noice.

    • @L0L0K3
      @L0L0K3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is possible. But a regular fan cannot provide that much airflow to go through all the components and provide enough cooling. Especially for the display. You can give it a try but more likely you gonna end up a burnt display. You can try anouther blower fan but this size is so odd is very hard to find any other more silent replacement.

    Hey, I'm planning to do the same mod with the same projector. I saw there is a second fan you didn't change in this video, any idea if it's smart to change that one too or any specs on the second fan? Maybe it's also a source of annoying noise? ;)
    Also, why did you add the DC-DC 8.5 V, what does it do?

    • @L0L0K3

      it's hard to find a more silent but same spec Fan, the DC-DC 8,5V it's just make the second fan more silent but still keeps the projector cool enough. but that's can be different, so adjust the voltage for your own need.

    Incredible my friend, I have the same projector model (branded AUN M18, but it's same stuff) and I replaced the original fan with the exact same model of noctua fan you used! I did this hack during the days of lockdown here in Italy, about 10 months ago and the projector still works great! Just I didn't touched the inlet blower because I wanted to avoid the possibility of overheating the lamp, limiting the blower speed as you did (if I understood well). Would like to find a quieter inlet blower as replacement, but it seems to not exist with the technical features of the original one. Anyway just installing the noctua is a great improvement in my opinion. It's really funny to see that in another part of the world a random guy like me did pretty much the same hack I did. Where are you from dear fellow?

    I also have this idea of modding my v630, i started by installing a PWM module on the intake fan and its okay

    • @L0L0K3
      @L0L0K3  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice words, It is possible to change the blower fan but very risky, 'cause the screen can be overheat if not enough airpressure is going though of it. You can try, but I wouldn't recommend it.

    • @juliensimon2000
      @juliensimon2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@L0L0K3 okay I understand that some air should circulate through the projector in order for heat to dissipate and for dust not to stack on lenses and LCD screen
      But as we already decreased the air flow while decreasing fan speed, maybe we could simply change the fan by a much quieter one.. idk
      Also do you understand the difference between air flow and air pressure? I thought both are binded but maybe not..

    • @L0L0K3
      @L0L0K3  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@juliensimon2000 sure you can change the fan but its hard to find a similar blower fan what is quieter simply because how the blower fans work. You can try to change it to a normal (axial fan) but those have less air pressure what is important to have enough pressure to move all the air through the components (display, power supply and the heatsink)
      And yes air pressure and air flow are totally different stuff. Air pressure is sort of how strongly it can move air. Air flow is mean how much air it can be moved. I hope this make it clear 😉

IT took me 2 hours and its causing lost warranty. The main noise its coming from blower fan, but I cant find any good model to replace it. Changing voltage to 8.5v doesnt give significant results. If someone want to do it, be aware that all the glasses and mirror inside must to be placed exactly in the same position it was originaly. You can get ghosting or circle shadow on the screen. All this means you didnt put glass or mirror in correct side. I learned it the hard way, got pain in the fingers from screws LOL. I'm looking really closely and saw that from the four cables in the new fan you have a Red, Yellow, Blue and GREEN cable, mine has Red, Yellow, Blue and BLACK
    Looks like you are completely cutting Blue and Green and connecting Yellow and Black ?
    Naturally, I'd just go for the RED and Black wire of my fan and wire them up with the red and black from the pin of the old fan.
    But you are going for the YELLOW (to red) and black Cable - Should I also go for my yellow instead of the Red? I'm trying to look this up with color coding on wires but it's just more confusing.

    Very interesting, but, a lot of trouble for most people. Put the projector on the ceiling a few feet or MORE behind you the further away the less noticeable the noise. The real problem with these projectors in the long run is not so much the noise-which will always be there, but DUST. They are not sealed so over time dust will invade the unit. The filter is OK but could BE A LOT BETTER. Perhaps a dual filter-now that would be an easier and important mod. Dust? It's EVERYWHERE. Why do you think they have CLEAN rooms in CPU manufacturing facilities? I wonder if running an ionizer in the projector room would help this?

    It makes no sense that a manufacture of such pricey gadgets won't use quiet fans. I'm almost certain that they know they exist. I have a laser projector with four fans: two 95MM fans, one 105MM fan and another that's directly under the laser which looks to be a 60MM fan. Although I am not certain yet. I tried building a hush box but that didn't help. It simply trapped the heat. The noise was still there. I will mod mine as soon as I get those fans in on order. By the way, you can use a 4pin to 2pin adapter for the fans which keeps you from having to cut and solder.

      Did you mod it? I wa thinking the ame thing but you need to get same spec fans or you can kill your projector. If you do get the same spec I wonder if theyll really be quieter
