    In an interview, Joyce Randolph once said out of the four of them, Jackie Gleason was the only one that really did not know how to skate. And before making that episode, he refused to take any prior skating lessons just so the scene could look funnier.

    • @toussaintlouverture5149
      @toussaintlouverture5149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I doubt that. He had to be an excellent skater to do this scene. You can't act like you can't skate and stay standing erect without knowing how to skate in the first place. A person that can't skate would not be able to even stand up for a long period of time. Gleason was a very athletic man for his size. I can tell he was a very good skater. During that era everyone could skate. They had no video games. No way a novice skater does this scene. They would be injured before the 3rd take.

    • @A2D4
      @A2D4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@toussaintlouverture5149 I tend to agree with you. If he was not a decent skater, the producers, etc., would have considered that he could have been injured in any number of ways if he had a bad fall and I’m sure they didn’t want to have to deal with that…

    • @toussaintlouverture5149
      @toussaintlouverture5149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@keymaninmusic just someone with common sense and that has tried to skate before. There is no such thing as a natural skater. You have to learn. I dare anyone. Especially any adult to put on some skates and try to do half of what he did. You will end up with stitches in your chin. It's kinda common sense. Not much of that is left.

    • @FigaroHey
      @FigaroHey ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He was an excellent dancer and very adept on his feet. Also, it wasn't the 2000s. They didn't worry that if the star got his hair wet everything would fall apart. Also, Jackie Gleason owned the production company and totally called the shots. If he said no rehearsal, there was no rehearsal.

    I remember those skates with hard wheels and no brakes. The wheels were like something carved out of rock. If you rolled over a pebble or a twig at the least your teeth rattled and at the worst you fell. Not encouraging to a physically timid introvert watching other kids from the sidelines. Got a pair for Christmas (I had not asked for them). Barely even tried them as nobody was helping me learn to skate. My mother was so annoyed. About a year later soft-wheeled skates with brakes came in and all my friends got them as their first skates. Of course my mother said I could go skating with my friends: she bought me skates. Use them. They were the metal kind, not boots. You put them on over your shoes and used a wing nut to loosen them and make them bigger as your feet grew. My friends on modern, soft skates were already proficient and wouldn't stay behind for me. So I never did learn to skate. At least I didn't do what my oldest brother did: put on his Christmas skates and promptly skate out the front door, across the porch and down ten concrete steps (after being warned not to try it). He never tried skates again. So my mother struck out both times she bought skates for one of her children.

    The funny part is that the way the 'kids' are speaking has dated more than the way the 'oldies' talk. The Kramdens and the Nortons are more timeless. Also - a 14 year old going out with a guy who's almost 18? That wouldn't fly today either.

      There's nothing special or significant about it. All my aunts and uncles on my father's side, and my father, have the same gesture of sort of clearing the way for themselves with the back of their hand. They also stick out their elbows to get more room around themselves in a crowd or if they felt like someone was standing too close. I'm guessing their parents did it too. They lived on a farm, 12 kids born in the early 20th century, and it's uncanny how they all have the same gestures. If you watch enough old movies and TV, you start seeing that gestures have fads the same as slang. In the 1970s people would put one foot forward, resting on their heel, showing the bottom of their shoe (like in the 'Keep on truckin' poster). If they wanted to show superiority at the same time, they'd put the opposite hand on their hip and possibly snap the fingers of the free hand if they had just given someone a sarcastic put down. I get annoyed when I watch a supposed period film and the characters are waving an upright finger back and forth in someone's face or rocking their head side to side in a way nobody did in the days the film is set. The actors grew up on music videos, and have no idea how people moved or gestured in the period they are depicting. Directors should pay attention to these details. And writers...using the bad grammar of 21st century public school pupils (and face it, teachers) when grammar was very strictly taught up until the late '60s and early '70s and people took great pride in speaking correctly and having a wide-ranging vocabulary. People did self-improvement courses to speak well for success, etc. Then you get some kid writing movies who has people in the 1940s or the Middle Ages saying, 'like whatever' or some other modern inanity. Even pitch and intonation has changed. Go back to the 1970s and no woman would have that terrible Valley Girl nasal fry unless it was put on for comic effect (Myrna Turner in the Odd Couple). Also people didn't use constant rising, questioning tones. But modern actors don't bother to watch newsreels or live tv quiz shows with ordinary people in them and catch the voice and mannerisms of the past.
