    Hi Berrie, thanks a lot for the nice video and for sharing your experience, you have a nice equipment! The 3.5V that you mention at around 10:50 for 60MHz signals may be related to the bandwidth of your oscilloscope (50MHz) rather than to the DDS signal generator. Tnx & best wishes!

    Good review .. but people have to understand its ' Not ' a lab grade unit , It's only around £60 , You can't compare it to a Sig Gen that costs £6000 ..... Very good though for the price .

    Hi. Drop in the amplitude due to scoop BW. Reference frequency is not sync to your f. generator.

    From an old Open University program in black and white I saw one Saturday in the 1970s it was said the 19th harmonic is required to have an almost square-squarewave ( 1/19F19 ). Many reviewing products do not seem to know this. The triangle wave will sit between sine and square as it is a filtered square wave ( eg.1/19^2 F19 ). If you use the squarewave make sure in and out look the same mostly is good enough. CMOS 74HC4060 will make very nice squarewaves at almost no money. Likely better than digital synthisis, as said a buffer problem on this unit? I would love to know 1kHz, 10 kHz, 20 kHz THD. One review seemed to think it was very low but gave no numbers.

      hmmm most of my measurement are to get an impression of a situation. Very rarely do I need acurate measurements. I could hook the square signal up to the SpecAnalyser and see how the harmonics drop off, to get an impression of acuracy. Not sure if the 19th harmonic is still above the noise floor, though. What do you think?

  • @nigelpearson6664
    @nigelpearson6664 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's where maths helps. 1/19 is almost 1/20th. 1/20 is 20 dB + 6dB. I would guess - 70 dB or better on noise floor. I have one of these scopes now. The FFT is fun but not very imformative. It shows a pure sine wave , square or triangle as it should. The FFT as useful as a thermometer when Covid. Better than nothing. On the whole a reasonable scope. FFT sometimes works well as Vrms rather than dBs if the dynamic range small enough. Windows 10 hid the drivers. Fun to sort that out. As a doctors bag it's not bad. It's not a hospital. It takes up no room and is instantly available. For a triangle wave it's 52 dB which is pushing hard on this FFT. However, 19^2 is unlikely to be instructive as a triangle wave is already filtered. BTW. The scope is very accurate on all voltage or time domain measurements.

      This evening I've bodged together a quick setup to see what the situation looks like in the time and frequency domain. The used signal was a 5MHz square wave, loaded with 50ohm at the end of the measurement chain. Between the osciloscope and the SA there's about 10dB attenuation. The pictures taken are available on www.sapadappa.nl/jds6600.html
      The odd harmonics are clearly visible (39th harmonic is just above the noise).
      Considering the picture, most distortion seems to come from the even (4rd and up) harmonics that are in the signal.
      So far, I've used the jds6600 mostly for doing quick measurements around filters/amplifiers in the HF range (< 30MHz) using sine shaped signals. So this quick experiment was a nice side step.

    28:25 Some of that might be due to the analog input stage of the Rigol scope itself, would be nice to see if it's any different on a higher bandwidth scope.
    I've got a similar DDS signal generator, I'll run it into my old Tek 2465 with 300MHz b/w and see what I get.

    • @drtidrow
      @drtidrow ปีที่แล้ว

      So I checked out my version of this signal generator (different brand name, but everything else is virtually the same) and got a similar rise time on my 2465, which means that it's the slew rate of the output amp that we're seeing here.

    Put the 50 ohm load at the far end of the cable, NOT at the signal generator end. By NOT terminating the cable properly you will have a mismatched transmission line and your readings will have ERRORS due to standing waves, the higher the frequency the greater the error.

    • @BerrieSchuurhuis
      @BerrieSchuurhuis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you could, but it would take some extra efforts. I liked your question so much, that I've created a little video around it. For me this is just a little experiment to find out and learn more about the making of these videos. I'll post this new video shortly.

    My RD JDS-6600 didn't arrive. I am told my credit card has been repaid from China ( bill arrives soon ) ! If anyone could do a comparison of full output verses 0.5 ohms non inductive I would be grateful ( using this FG ). 2 x 0.6W 1 ohms should be OK. A 1 ohms 7 watt was also 100 uH being a wire spiral. A 1 ohms 3 watt metal oxide 15 uH. The ouput should be 1/100 of no load approximately. My Pintek FG 52 is first class on this. 5.2 MHz is a bit limiting. It's THD at 1% is a bit high. A 50 ohms test is useful in general as it should be 1/2. 2 x100R = 50R. Carbon Composition are low cost if 5% is OK ( it is I feel ), virtually no inductance. CC are used for pulse lasars to have maximum speed and have returned due to this. Peak LCR 45 is a good low cost bridge for resistor inductance. My Multicomp ( Owon ) MP720016 scope is better than I guessed and needs a better FG.

      Hi Sergio,
      This morning I connected output ch1 from the JDS6600 to ch1 of my scope. And output ch2 to ch2 of my scope.
      The JDS6600 configured to generate 50kHz sinewave on ch1 and 50kHz trianglewave on ch2
      The scope is showing both signals correctly and at the same time.
      I wonder what goes wrong on your end.
      - did you switch on both outputs on the JDS6600 (light above BNC switched on, display showing "ON")?
      - Is the output voltage of the JDS configured configured so low, that your scope does not see it? (Be aware of 1x/10x attenuators in your scope probe!)
      - In case you think you see ch1 output on ch2, I would suspect a configuration error more likely than a problem with your JDS or scope.
      Interesting to see/hear what you find out!

      Hi, I assume you mean that you're the manufacturer of the JDS-6600 unit. If so, I'd like to say that I received my JDS-660-15M today. I bought it on Amazon under the name "Koolertron" and I was very impressed with how intuitive the system controls were.
      I watched the manufacturer's TH-cam video for the unit, (th-cam.com/video/Fn76Yp-vATI/w-d-xo.html), and though I'm not a big fan of "Silent Tutorials", I kept my patients and watched the entire video. It was worth the effort because I'm very new to the use of Oscilloscopes and Signal Function Generators.
      I bought my first scope about 1 week ago on eBay. It's an old BK Precision 2120 and after I connected the 6600-15M Generator to it, I was able to assess that it was in good working order. I've got a long way to go but I do want to say that I had a small problem with the software installation.
      I build my own computers and have an above average working knowledge of the more complex computer systems, (PC). I'm 62 years old and I download and install many complex programs at a rate of about 3 or 4 every 3.5 weeks, (I write user manuals for flight simulators).
      My point here is that I don't want you to think I had trouble with the 6600-15M software installation for lack of experience with computers. In fact, the software that came with the unit was on a small disc and was easy enough to unpack to my desktop.
      At that point, I saw three folders and one "Setup" file. I searched for, and found the two PDF manuals in one of the folders. The one with the instructions for installing the software was not very well written. The three steps that cover the installation in the very beginning of the manual was vague and disjointed. It failed to explain that I should only run the "Setup" file that was grouped with the 3 folders.
      Instead, I opened the first folder and ran the "Setup" file that was in there. I thought the other folders were for some other O/S and I ignored them.
      The 'short story' is that the manual should have directed the person to run ONLY the "Setup" file that was grouped with the other 3 folders in the unzipped folder. If you would have included a screenshot of the installer and then indicated that ALL 3 steps in that installer panel MUST be completed in the proper order, it may have been much easier to understand.
      Anyway, I don't know if that makes any sense to you but I did finally figure out what I had to do to install the software. It worked very well once it was correctly installed and I believe it will make a good addition to the JDS-6600-15M unit, (or whichever unit the buyer may have, i.e. 6600-30M, or 60M, etc.).
      Thanks for a great product and very good price!
      Richj

      Hello!
      I wrote that post on the day I received the unit. Since then, I've used it everyday and I'm VERY IMPRESSED! I'm a beginner and very new to the Oscilloscope and Signal Function Generators. I've had no previous training and I'm reading and watching tutorials to acquire a basic knowledge before I continue on with formal training in the future.
      Therefore, I was very happy to see that the 6600-15M control panel was incredibly intuitive and easy to understand! All the selections for using the functions and options were very clear and in just a few minutes, I understood what I needed to push, switch, or dial, in order to get what I wanted.
      I still have a long way to go before I truly know what I'm doing and the way you've designed this unit's control panel allowed me to concentrate on the projects I prepared rather than spending a lot of time having to learn how the unit was operated. I've already created and saved an Arbitrary wave using the software in my computer and then I was able to apply it to the project, no problem!
      The JDS-6600-15M was far easier to operate than I even hoped. There were quite a few reviews in the Amazon website about how great and easy this unit was.
      For those who may need to know, the manual for the 6600 is available on the software disc within one of the folders. I am extremely pleased and happy that I purchased this model.
      EXCELLENT UNIT!
      Thank you,
      Rich

    Hello Berrie and other youtubers,
    I own the exact same oscilloscope as the one used in this video, and I own the FY6600 function generator, also the 60Mhz version. For those of you that aren't aware of this there is a way to turn your DS1054Z into a 1104Z, this making it able to visualize signals up to 100Mhz and also unlock ALL other options this scope has for free, for example decoding digital I2C ... There are way to many options that you are able to unlock for me to sum them up here, and I don't know how to add a printscreen to a comment on here.
    You can find a nice tutorial on how to do this here: m.th-cam.com/video/DXA7Wcvo-2E/w-d-xo.html
    This is completely FREE and RIGOL is aware of this and hasn't taken any steps to block this, I guess its a little present for you for buying their product. Also when this hack was published the sales of this scope went threw the roof, so this may have been a nice incentive for them to turn their head the other way. ;)
    I have done this around 15 august and my scope works like a charm, measuring signals into the 80Mhz range. You have to decide if you want to do this, I'm only sharing my
    experience that everything works great.
    Berrie, thank you for the great movie you posted here. Ik heb me geabonneerd op je youtube kanaal, ben benieuwd wat je in de toekomst nog gaat plaatsen, ik zie in elk geval dat
    je goed bent uitgerust (y)
