Charlotte Perkins Gilman's controversial and disturbing feminist parable "The Yellow Wallpaper" concerns a 19th-century woman who, having been diagnosed with a "nervous condition," is taken by her husband to a remote estate for a rest cure.
She is confined to a room on the top floor, supposedly to give her time to recover. However, her confinement isn't voluntary and the former nursery begins to take on a life of its own in her mind.
She begins finding patterns in its yellow wallpaper and eventually becomes convinced that a woman is trapped behind it, later identifying as the woman herself. This unsettling psychological investigation reveals the repressive and chauvinistic views that defined women’s mental health care up until relatively recently.
American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper was first published in 1892. Her own postpartum depression and subsequent confinement became the impetus for writing the short story. Today her story is regarded from a range of perspectives, from feminist literature to Gothic horror (a genre of literature characterized by fear, horror, and death, as well as nature, individualism, and emotion).
The short story contains many powerful symbols, such as yellow wallpaper representing confinement, the moon and womanhood, and being mentally stimulated at night. The estate represents the narrator’s isolation and confinement. Other themes include confinement, mental illness, and women’s roles in society.

Look, everyone interprets things differently but the Asian thing completely came out of nowhere. I think the fact that you briefly mentioned it with absolutely ZERO supporting evidence to back it up proves it’s a moot point. Don’t know why it’s in the video.

Maybe the color yellow refers to the skin color of Asians. The protagonist's hatred against the color yellow is mentioned several times throughout the parable : "The color is repellent, almost revolting, smouldering unclean yellow," "It is the strangest yellow, that wallpaper! It makes me think of yellow things I ever saw, not beautiful ones like buttercups, but old, foul bad yellow things."
@@summerlight2000 I agree that her passionate dislike for the COLOR is mentioned; the problem is that color being associated with Asian culture is something we as the readers can only infer because of history, not because of the book. There's nothing even remotely close in the TEXT to support that the protagonist was referring to Asians. It's just a blind assumption.

yes, they should have really elaborated on the point or cut it. it most definitely was not a conscious decision to have the yellow represent fear of Asian immigration but could be a subconscious choice that reflects the historical context in which Gilman wrote. of course it could also just be completely unrelated and the colour yellow could have been chosen for a different meaning or just chosen at random.
My interpretation that no one asked for. ✨ She’s in a psych ward with postpartum psychosis. Not married to the doctor at all. The room that was previously occupied by children that she hated is her body. The wallpaper she wants to rip off is her skin. She feels trapped in her own body. Rips her skin off to free her self/hallucinations, hence why the doctor passes out. 💅🏻

I was confused as well. Maybe yellow wallpaper, yellowman.
Gilman was not fond of people of colour. Yes she was a feminist but only for white women like her. She was afraid of the "problems" people of colour might cause in society, even writing a book about it called "A Suggestion on the N**** Problem"(1908). The colour yellow is loaded with meaning. During the 19th century, yellow was often the colour that referred to any person of colour or any immigrant. Gilman might have picked the colour yellow to represent these people. How I see it she might have used the yellow wallpaper as a metaphor of wanting to protect women like her from these people of colour and therefore the woman tears the wallpaper away, trying to free the white women she later discribes as being a part of.
My friend recommended this short story to me, and I find it really interesting, but the main character reminds me a lot of my mom and her weird actions

I agree, I strongly believe the narrator has post partum depression, and perhaps she suffers with other undiagnosed things, but PPD explains a lot of her behaviour and she definitely has it.

I know, I feel like this is a bit of a stretch given that race and ethnicity isn't brought up even slightly. Although, there is a fear of the unknown and perhaps in a destorted way this could be interpreted as the mass fear of the unknown.

This was so useful, I was pretty lost by the meaning when initially reading. One issue, the wallpaper being about xenophobia made absolutely no sense though lol. Not mentioned or inferred at all anywhere in the text, felt like you could've just cut that part out.

I did wonder though, while I agree with the assessment that the treatment chosen didnt help, was it the actual treatment, or was it the advancement of the condition due to lack of correct treatment, making it worse? Also in the same sense, was it her obsession with the wallpaper the factor in her hallucinations or was it from sleep deprivation from the condition? Isnt it very possible she would have hallucinations regardless if she obsessed about anything?
I like your questioning, especially because the woman wrote. Even though the treatment wasn't helping, she was still able to write about her reality in privacy. So I guess you could say that the isolation wasn't being administered to the effect that her husband had hoped anyways, because she was still able to exercise thought. It's very likely that her condition got worse due to no treatment rather than improper treatment.
i can't imagine this being a plausible interpretation. if you were isolated in a house with nothing to do, with your family treating you essentially like a child, i am absolutely certain you'd go crazy too.
I think that it was both her lack of proper treatment as well as the treatment they did prescribe to her that amplified her condition. Without proper treatment it wasn’t going to get better, and with total isolation it was probably going to get worse. As for the wallpaper thing, I don’t think it’s what made her hallucinate it more was just the main outlet for her hallucinations. It’s very possible she could’ve hallucinated about something else, the wallpaper just so happens to have extreme thematic significance which is why it was chosen by the author.

This story makes me feel weird because I used or i still get obsessed with certain things I can't hesitate for example a pattern or a texture there was a pillow i hated it's form and especially texture it gives me goosebumps but I used always to stare and touch it a lot even though it makes me uncomfortable

Which for me is not supported by anything in the text or context

i was following along thinking this was very well made untill a reference to xenofobia was made? i read it twice before watching this and the reference of xenofobia towards asians is such a wild assumption that has 0 support in the text and just feels like something you added for some personal reason? Mentioning xenofobia as a result of the character disliking a specific colour is just out of this world in my personal opinion. That comment really has nothing to do in a summary unless its your personal ideology you try to push.

God, we’re not even far from all this nonsensical and backwards thinking and prescription for good health. My father passed recently and I believe his COVID confinement and manual restraints after he removed his feeding tubes 3x are what hastened his death over the cancer and COVID he battled. Family was not allowed in to see him and he rapidly deteriorated in his final days. Hospitals are still getting it wrong. Fresh air, family and friends, options, and respecting the patient’s wishes are what preserves or maintains health - not the opposite!!!

I read and analyzed The Yellow Wallpaper while in high school, again in college and later on my own. NEVER has anything about Asians or any race been included in any analysis I’ve heard. I TOTALLY disagree with this part of your analysis. Highly disappointing!

Symbolizes contemporary Xenophobia...fears of Asian immigration? No! lol I do not like this analysis at all ! I disagree with almost everything she is saying.
I'd argue you can have that take, especially if you understand the cultural significance of East Asian Americans in America throughout the 1850's and up. There are multiple symbolisms in this book, which means it can be taken up to multiple interpretations. Considering how this book was published in 1890, it wouldn't be far fetched to have a xenophobic outlook on the yellow wallpaper itself. The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed almost a decade earlier, as well as the Scott Act being passed two years before the release of the story. Since East Asian hate was on the rise due to Americans being paranoid over them "taking their jobs", it wouldn't be surprising to have this take on The Yellow Wallpaper. The whole "East Asians are yellow" thing was expanded on and basically popularized by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, who, if you know anything about what the man was spewing, grouped all East Asians and some Central Asians under the label "Mongolian Race", and implicating the name "Mongols", which striked troubling and threatening connotations for Europeans (and Americans as I'm sure they had some knowledge of European history through whatever means they had) with their memories of Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, and Timur. The yellow label came associated with discrimination, exclusion, and violence. Again, symbols are always up to interpretation. It's an interesting interpretation, yes, but not completely far fetched to think that it could signify xenophobia. Plus I don't think that it's that hard to assume that the narrator is a white woman, considering I highly doubt that a successful white man in that day and age wouldn't have a distaste for marrying a different race.
