AEMO needs a 'complete restructuring' and must be brought back into the 'real world'

  • Former ANSTO chief executive Dr Adi Paterson slams AEMO, calling for a complete restructure.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced the Coalition’s nuclear policy last week, including the seven proposed sites for the nuclear reactors.
“My view is that AEMO should be completely restructured,” Dr Paterson said.
“It should be brought back into the real world, not animal farm.
“I think the Australia that we love is on the edge of a cliff.”

Yes the CSIRO Has been an utter failure to Australia. If you are given a task and you don't know how to di , speak up. It's criminal to turn info received from any Tom, Dick or Harry into such so called "factual" information. So many countries have people with the intelligence about Nuclear power, think Canada, France, Saudi Arabia. They may have had build delays, but that is more of an indication that they would be wise to real figures now. And on that, I most think that NoBaseLoad Bowen restricted the CSIRO, Financially or in scope of their investigation. It's the same old , same old with Bowen, failure after failure in positions of trust. Immigration minister, shadow treasurer to Shorten, single handily giving Shortens chance at PM to Morrison. He just isn't capable of a big project.

    • @tassied12

AEMO's reports are based on real world data. Real world data tells us that every western nuclear project over the last 20 years (Hinkley, Vogtle, Sumner, Flamanville, Olkiluoto,) has gone way over time and budget.
They also make the point that every country is different in its particular circumstances so what works in one country may not work so well in another. Australia for example does not have access to large amounts of hydro to balance its nuclear (eg Canada, Sweden, Finland) or connections to a wider grid (eg France)

The median age of retirements of its reactors is 42 years, even if every single reactor still operating has its life extended to 75 years, less than ten of them will be operating in 2050. That means it will have to build 278 AP1000's by 2050.

To AEMO's credit it called out Labors' rush to close coal Power Stations. warning that renewables would not be able to cope, issuing warnings of blackout risks this summer in Vic and NSW due to reliability risks because renewable infrastructure has not been built or advanced enough.
AEMO plans to bring in if required rotating grid area shutdowns to shore up power NSW and Victoria over summer, with schemes such as such as paying for additional generation from existing coal and gas plants and for large energy users to voluntarily reduce demand.

Australia is flush with yellow cake. SMRs are great but still not up to spec for all purpose. Two thirds of Australia is uninhabitable. Except the workforce, but we are close to India. If politics was eliminated, FNQ could be nuclear powered silicon valley. We have, food, water, space and resources. I've heard quite a few self-appointed experts tell us over the years that what the power system needs is a cabal of 'real' engineers in charge of planning. When they are asked if we don't already have the best engineers at [insert name of system operator], they say that this cannot be the case because we aren't going in the direction they would have chosen (eg no self-respecting engineer would employ wind turbines). In other words, the engineers in charge cannot be any good if they don't agree with the person making all the noise, usually an old white dude with doctor as a title wanting to take things back to the way we did them in their time (ie nothing new is any good). The only way someone like this gets what he wants is to put him in charge of choosing the people in charge AND of making sure they don't think for themselves...
