There are many different Patchouli oils from many regions of rhe world. And they are all so different from slight differences to vast differences. Some smell dark, earthy and dirty and some can smell like fruity chocolate. And you are correct. It is one of the most extensively used oils in Perfuming. It is a base note classed as a woody earth note, even though Patchouli is a leaf. And it is a fixative so it anchors down the more volatile oils.
The clean Patchouli you describe could be the reconstituted oil called Clearwood. It has all the dirtiness, leathery earthy nuances removed so you are left with a clean, softer more forgiving material that blends really well with musks and woods as it is a woody ambery note. It even acts as a blender between mid and base notes. Another is Limbwood Base. A woody amber note with strong nuances of Patchouli and very diffusive. Alot nicer than the neat oil. Patchouli happens to be my least favourite oil. To me it smells very medicinal like some kind of woody herbal medicine. BUT it does remarkable things in a formula and impossible to avoid using it sometimes.
I believe the longer the Patchouli has aged, the more beautiful it becomes. A bit like aged Mysore Sandalwood..I havent personally smelled a good aged Patchouli but I hear its heavenly. Not one of my favourite materials but certainly a must have in a Perfumers scent library.

Patchouli from Nobile 1942 is also my favorite so far, with Patchouli Noir from Il Profumo a not-far-off second. I've had FM Monsieur and sold it, because I didn't want to be hit over the head with a highly-synthetic based patch strongarm fragrance. I can see why folks love the Jovoy's but find them a bit over-saturated if one likes that style. I agree with you entirely that the Patchouli from Nobile 1942 is perfectly blended, ultra-refined, smooth and elegant, and the patchouli has little to no trace of the dirty and rough-edged aspects, while also seamlessly integrating just the right amount of warmed-congac booziness to elevate and give all the components a beautiful richness and background amber hue that offsets the restrained dry, slightly green vegetal accords. I got my Patchouli from Nobile earlier this summer and can't wait for fall and winter to wear it more often. Great that you included it here in your review, as the Nobile Patchouli is highly overlooked and underratted.

Great explanation and list of patchouli scents.
My favourite, where it's a main player would be Battaniye by Pekji. It's an amber fragrance with patchouli and some honeysuckle that makes it an extremely cozy and elegant smell.
Since earthy, soil heavy fragrances are my favourite, patchouli tends to be a significant part of those accords in them. Some that come to mind are: the original Zoologist Bat, Fathom V by Beaufort London and Chypre Mousse by Oriza L. Legrand. All earthy and with patchouli but extremely different.

Good video. As for Jovoy, I get a huge vetiver from Incident diplomatique, more than patchouli.. It's Psychedelique that's the patchouli bomb. Great stuff.
It's funny because I didn't used to like the smell of patchouli at all, when I got into fragrances. It took a few years but it changed.
I remember how Sebastian was talking about this in one of his videos.. and he said something like If you're a true fumehead, one day you'll wake up and you'll love the smell of patchouli. 🙂

I have tested some that you mentioned (Sticky Fingers, Noir Patchouli and Patchouli Nobile) and have a few more. I like Chypre style and have Chypre 21 by Heeley and Une Rose Chyprée by Tauer Perfumes that both contain patchouli, Murmur by Pigmentarium also has it and so does my favorité Nobile 1942 Malia, the only niche fragrance I have that I would call feminine. But the one that seems closest to Patchouli essential oil in a 80ties rocker style is Patch Flash by Tauerville.

I received a bottle of reminiscence patchouli today and wow !!! Have you tried this ?? I had heard a few rumblings and was looking to get a new winter staple in my collection alongside my favourites (Dior homme parfum, Dior eau sauvage 2012, Gucci guilty absolute and vintage LIDGE)
This has gone straight in at number 1. I have always been after Chanel coromandel but no longer , this is very similar and exactly the kind of earthy wet patchouli that I adore. I urge you to try it if you haven’t already. Hope you’re keeping well. All the best mate. Paul.

I used to call them, those who over wore patch, The Patchouli People.
In some regards , it was a way to identify or locate/draw those of similar interest.
I always thought that they must have become immune to the patchouli itself, thus over spraying .
With the dirty hippy's , I don't think they could afford better blends, thus the $2 patchouli oil.
The Patchouli People along with the Dirty Hippy's both wore beads boutiques cheap patch oil.
How do I know this, well I bought a small vial of it once, and it gave me a headache along with the people around me.
About two years ago , I wore i Profumi di Firenze Patchouly Rosso . My friend said I smell like a bag of
wet mulch that you put in the garden.
I said, yes, " that's the vibe you're supposed to get " . He then said _WHY !_
I never bought a bottle. It was overpowering and , on me lasted forever.
It reminds me of Lorenzo Villoresi's Patchouli. Lorenzo's is that damp basement type for the first hour or so.
I like Von Eusersdorff Patchouli more . There's like a dry seeds and steams to it in the opening.
There's a nice patch by Al Haramain called Arabian Treasure. I got compliments wearing it.
Il Profvmo has a nice patchouli with soft edges to it. I don't really care for much else from that house though.
Patchouli Leaves from Montale has avery nice fall appeal to it. Then it goes into a sugar bomb.
Still haven't upgraded to a full bottle of Nobile 1942's Patchouli, but the 19ml will do. I really like that one.
I haven't even opened up Profumum's bottle of Patchouli , nor the bottle of Ambre Aura from them.
I have a good number of patchouli's that I love.
I would like to recommend *Areej le dore's Grandenia* .
If you get a chance to sample it , please do.
    Wonderful patchouli dry down.
I'll be getting a partial of that.
BTW, Pep, I can still smell Ambre Fetchie on my skin from yesterday. I didn't spray a lot.
Now, has there been a dumb down of AF from when I got this 5ml decant ?
    I hope not.
    Wonderful wonderful wonderful.
    Jez I love this stuff.
On the hunt my friend .
I would like more single not exploration uploads if possible.
