    Adventures of Dino Riki was played on a Retron5 and recorded on a Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket. All music comes from the game soundtrack.

    Back in like early 90s this was the jam. Played it religously! You have to have super ninja skills for this one. Its utterly brutal and unforgiving. Which was exactly what the NES enthusiasts like me loved! Back in the day, you had guys (and some gals of course) memorizing the timing of everything in every level, every boss. If you messed up once, you knew you messed up and accepted the defeat. It just made you that much better. It truly was a different time. :)

    Dino Riki, a game I've been pronouncing "dyno reekee" as in tiki torch, was an excellent game, especially for the year it was released. The game could be memorized, like many other games, and completed after several attempts. The jumping was the most difficult part but when I learned to control the distance it became fluent and a part of the game. There were no major glitches or "impossible" parts. After a few attempts you learn were the invisible power-ups are because they are uncovered by your weapon which is being fired almost constantly, they are always in the same place. The game play is challenging but simple, and fun enough to keep you engaged through gradual progression. I was given the game shortly after its release and have since finished it multiple times, on console, pre game genie.

    Dino riki is a great game from my childhood since I loved dinosaurs. The trick is to find the hidden power ups. To find them you have to watch your shot. You shot will stop like your hitting something and sometimes make a chime sound. Shoot that area a few times and the power up will show. Collect the wings but make sure you have fire shot. That way you can fly around and have an auto shot. Also, if you have the wings and find more wing power ups, not only will your wings grow but you can take a hit and still be able to fly. The first level will gives you every power up you need to become stronger. Even the macho riki power is there.

    Oh, man. I have a lot of happy memories of playing this game when I was a kid with my other friends, but we definitely gave up on it before long. We really liked the graphics and the fun power-ups and the dinosaurs enough that it briefly made the insane difficulty worth it (we were big fans of the very silly Macho-Riki powerup), but yeah, not exactly a classic, and I've never gone back to replay it.

    As a fan of NES games, this was one of the toughest games I've played in my childhood. Only 2 times I had made it till that last boss of 4-4 (took me nearly 6 months of playing the game) but didn't manage to beat it. Both the times I entered that last cave with either the level 1 ammo or the level 2 ammo. Ultimately wasn't enough to beat the boss😅

  • @prometheus6474
    @prometheus6474 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This game is my favourite on the NES - believe it or not. Some of the issues you describe have in-game solutions. For example most of jumping can be avoided by using the (sometimes hidden) wings powerup. Some invincible enemies can be destroyed by picking up the hand powerup when your weapon is highest level (or a star). There are plenty of hidden caveman powerups which also help although I had to find them through guides. There are many secrets. There is a cheat which lets you continue levels. It's got some genuine issues nevertheless but please keep in mind that it's been released in 1987. The reward at the end is actually good for someone who likes the game. It doesn't just loop - it loops but with a higher difficulty level! To someone who enjoys the game it's a good thing. I think when given appreciation this title shines and is very fun but I can see why it may not be for everyone.

So, if anyone is playing this game NOT in the late 80s at the age of 16-95 - your opinion means little to nothing to how hard this was as a kid. Hudson soft also created one of the greatest games on the NES, Faxanadu. I can even hear some of the soundtrack similarity between them; I'd definitely say that the music of this game is its only redeemable aspect. But it certainly isn't at the quality of Faxanadu.

      @@Cannotbetamed1 what? How is that possible? It's easily one of the greats. To this day I'm not aware of a game that so thoroughly, and eerily, cements the mood of an environment. The visuals, music, and even different sound effects make each of the 4 regions feel unique and captivating, not to mention the unique dungeon types in each region. I was always baffled that there was never a sequel on the SNES with expanded story lines and mechanics. My only complaints are that there is a bug with the Pendant item where it actually makes you weaker instead of stronger, (so you should always avoid it), and the end section can be a bit confusing if you've never played it before. Oh, and also the password system is annoying. I would recommend Faxanadu above Legend of Zelda, and probably equal footing with Castlevania 3 and Metroid, except better music. You gotta play it.

  • @npc.retro87

    It's not that bad. The worst part definitely is the jumping. But every long platform area there's a flying power up. There are multiple macho Riki powers up throughout the whole game. First level just after the lilly pads off of a rock i believe. Yes it sucks that theres no ending. Makes me believe it was intended as an arcade game.

    😂 At first I thought: well, this looks like it should be fun, like Knightmare on the MSX or Elemental Master for Genesis.
