You're right. I think the fact that he wasn't completely cemented in as a demi-god of comedy yet had something to do with it. He still was sometimes nervous when "roasting" certain celebrities and politicians, etc.. It appears to be more nervous laughter than anything else but you are correct, he laughs more during this gig than any other in memory. He will never be replaced.

There was a time that Johnny and Ed had divorced their first wives, and Don had not yet married his wife Barbara. The three of them supposedly painted the town red, once The Tonight Show was taped. I heard Don say to Johnny several times Johnny helped him break into television. Of course, that was usually followed by a wisecracking that had Johnny laughing.
The humor and the Roasts are all classics not but I can't watch them anymore because it hurts too much. They were all part of my childhood and though it would honor their memory to enjoy them it just reminds me of how many great talents we lost and that my parents are gone now too. My parents and i always watched Rickles on the Carson show and in a few movies and we loved these Roasts dearly. I hope that Rickles is having a huge huge party and Roast up there reunited with all his friends and like minded late comics: He's with Johnny Carson and Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers, Shecky Green, Rodney Dangerfield, Marty Allen, Buddy Hackett, Sinatra, Martin, Davis Jr. all gone now :( Mannnnn, do I feel old.

My family watched all of Dean Martin's roasts on tv, whenever they were on. The roasts that weren't Dean's, many times were not on the 3 channels we got back then. This program must have been during the late 1960s or early 1970s as young as everyone looks.

Just love the way Groucho won't crack a smile. The man was a comedic genius, yes, but he couldn't stand not being the centre of attention. Just look at his appearances on "What's my line?" to see what I mean.
Now that is how to do a roast of people, with class. It is a shame that we lost all of them, people now days don't know real comedy, they think that comedians have to cuss all of the time.

I think he may have had a couple of vodkas. He seems relaxed yet slurs a bit. Still awesomely funny tho.

Hard to believe it’s been 7 years since this debuted. I’m showing my age here but I would’ve placed this at 10 years old.
Some of his jokes don't seem that funny if read on paper but he energizes and punches up the delivery so well.
