- New York singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal first gained attention after appearing on 'America’s Got Talent' in 2016. Her performance helped her score a hit with “I Don’t Know My Name,” and she signed to Simon Cowell’s label soon after. Back in June, VanderWaal dropped “Moonlight” as the lead single for her upcoming album 'Just the Beginning,' which drops tomorrow. The song is about dealing with depression and looking back on how it’s possible for someone to change so much.

Pikachu Thompson, I'm with you. This has been my favorite Grace song since I first heard it, but I really, really love it now. I know I'm in the minority, but when I listen to music, I listen to the music (including the voice as a musical instrument), but not so much to the words. Sometimes I pick up on things, usually not. (I thought Jeremy by Pearl Jam was about an autistic boy who had a verbal breakthrough in class one day. Yeah, that's my level of attention to lyrics.) I have heard a criticism that Grace is too young to understand what she's singing about, but that's clearly nonsense. Now that I know what this song is about, and now that I've actually paid attention to the words, wow. So eloquent, and so expressive! Match those powerful words to Grace's powerful vocal expression, and it's just amazing. In 30 years, this song will still be loved and played on whatever we have for radio :)
She did explain it but he should have titled it Official Lyrics and Inspiration for Moonlight. Some people are more perceptive than others, age has nothing to do with it. Knowing your best friend so well that you can see her personality suddenly change and the final results is hospitalization for depression. The promise of friendship through think or thin and recalling they're good times together
13 years old and not only aware of other people's mental health issues, but truly compassionate about them? To understand that there is no getting around or replacing therapy and counselling for people with mental health issues. To be able to write songs about these problems without making fun of the problems, or the people who suffer from them? At 13?? I suffer from suicidal depression, and my life and my family DID fall apart and break like so much glass. This IS my life in her lyrics. I will respect this human being named Grace Vanderwaal for as long as I continue to live. May whatever Powers That Be bless and guard her, now and always.

Honestly, this makes me choke up. The way she describes mental illness is so true. I had a close friend who just completely changed and no longer wants me in their life. There’s a spark that was lost...and the way she describes it is so accurate. It’s like they’re just gone, lost in their own world. And you can’t do anything to bring them back. It’s something they have to bring back in themselves. But losing that person is so, so hard.

Honestly it’s actually impossible to hate on her. Because she’s never been in love, and she’s a normal 13 year old girl, but in a way she’s different. Love this, all my friends left me when my depression got really bad, they would make excuses and i would hear comments like “dont invite her, its just too much” , all i wanted was support. that ended up in me making horrible choices due to my bpd, i know its a tough condition for other people to see, but the fact that they just had enough without even telling me what was wrong was the worst part. I got a bf a year later and has been with me for 3 years, seen the best and worst and i finally feel like i found someone who will never leave me. Too bad my friends thought that way, but i guess you figure out who really cares for you in the worst times. What im getting at is that if you are a friend of someone with mental illness dont asume they are good cause they are smiling, be there for them, and if they really are your friend, never leave them... it all gets better, but support is needed
Children don't understand depression, they don't even consider that when they deal with an erratic person. Children are cruel because of their ignorance. They can only judge by the knowledge they have. This is a bit different but I was in love with a girl in 8th grade and she was mean to me. I was able to date every girl I liked but her, she was the girl I wanted to be with. I found out years later her father was sexually assaulting her during that time. I would never in a million years consider that being the reason for her meaness
