Add pure gold leaf glitter to whisky and other spirits.

  • And off on another random tangent we go. This video shows how to add pure edible gold leaf to clear drinks. The gold leaf is easily available on eBay, although you have to specifically look for the pure edible gold as some cheaper versions use a base material with a gold layer on it.
    Since it's TT time here on the Isle of Man (Motorbike racing Tourist Trophy) it seems fitting to use a commemorative whisky that was bottled in a limited edition for the Joey Dunlop Foundation. Joey is a legendary TT racer who sadly passed while pursuing the thrills of his sport.
    This is also a good time to mention my brother's whisky channel on TH-cam, which features distillery tours and whisky reviews from "The Manx bothy".
    / ralfystuff
    I'll also include a link to the Joey Dunlop Foundation which continues his legacy of helping people with disabilities enjoy holidays on the Isle of Man.

    The Smirnoff product uses a carbohydrate based polymer called gellan gum to help suspend the gold leaf. You will also find this added to many non-dairy "milk" products like soy or almond milk. It creates what is called a fluid gel which allows suspension with minimal increases in viscosity. It is tricky to get this to work in high alcohol systems. I know since my company assisted Diageo in developing their vodka.

      Gellan gum, eh? Interesting. The first thought that occurred to me was xanthan gum, but then I realized it doesn't do so well with large concentrations of alcohol.

      Gold is pretty non-reactive, absent industrial processes or electricity. I'd say you might just poop a bit o' shiny poop! You might have to spend more time than you'd like investigating the issue to see it, however. There's not a lot of gold involved, after all.

    • @TheJohn8765
      @TheJohn8765 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      mharris1270 Right (thanks for your reply; I just looked this up), but these were gold salts preparations. Those are *much* more bio-available than the elemental form. I'm sure a small amount of Clive's gold was oxidizing and such, but forming a salt with a not-so-reactive metal like gold takes deliberate action and energy.

    • @cardeci
      @cardeci 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      elemental gold is about as non-reactive as it gets. You can probably eat your way through all the gold reserves in the world with no ill effect (if you wash the gold first. Be hygienic!)
      Also, the amount of gold in a gold leaf is beyond tiny.

    So reading up on the reviews for a similar product on amazon, it seems many people are complaining the leaf isn't actually gold.
    Is there a clever way to determine if the sheets are actually made of gold? Perhaps by looking at the conductivity of the sheets?
    The amazon reviews were of burning the sheets, but I'm not sure that's a good way to determine if the sheets are gold.

    The gold "vodka" you described as sold by Smirnoff is actually branded as a cinnamon flavoured liquor on the tag I have had it a few times at parties and it does taste like a cinnamon vodka but I guess they maybe had to call it a liquor due to whatever they did to stop the gold leaf floating up. I have also had it on a shelf in my cupboard for a while and it has stayed very well distributed through the bottle. Great video as always!

    • @thewuurm
      @thewuurm 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the label says "liqueur" instead of "liquor" it just means it's been flavoured and sweetened. Nothing necessarily to do with making the gold float, although a higher viscosity product thanks to sugar could certainly aid in that. Liquor is just a generic North American term for any distilled spirits.
      Frankly it just sounds like Smirnoff's version of Goldschlager, a Swiss cinnamon schnapps with gold leaf added. Not terrible, actually, at least as I recall from being 18 with more money than responsibility.

      Hey, no need to apologize. The distinction between liqueur and liquor is just one that most people I know don't realize exists, so I figured it was that. That's my faulty assumption there; I didn't even think about the possibility of autocorrect mangling the meaning.

    Clive, I've got a bottle of the gold leaf Smirnoff in the drinks cabinet - I haven't touched it since it was bought for me at Christmas 2014 (I'm a big of a vodka snob and so haven't felt the need to drink it - I like smooth vodka, and Smirnoff is cheap and nasty even if it does have precious metals in it). So, just to scotch your theories It looks exactly like it did when I put it in there - the gold is still in suspension and distributed evenly in the bottle...

    I could be wrong but I think a small amount of food grade glycerine is added to some "gold leaf" drinks. I know one of the gold leaf schnapps has 10% glycerine but I'm not sure if that is specifically to keep the leaf in suspension or to give it it's syrupy texture. Maybe try 1% in Vodka or something?

    I never bought or tried Smirnoff's gold vodka, but looking at it on the shelf, it was obviously much more viscous than straight vodka, so they seem to have added a thickener to keep the gold in suspension.

    I was in our local one day recently and I saw a bottle of vodka with gold glitter in it and I thought of Clive because he likes glitter lamps. I hadn't got round to contacting him about it and how he migh like to make it happen, as he does! - but here it is! :)

  • @rdouthwaite
    @rdouthwaite 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Smirnoff gold liqueur has, I think, a higher viscosity due to the addition of sugar. I guess this acts to hold the gold in suspension. I work in a retailer that sells the stuff and I can confirm that, unless disturbed by handling, the gold particles remain in the same relative positions pretty much indefinitely.

  • @noizelab
    @noizelab 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Smirnoff did something to their gold vodka to make the gold float. I have a bottle at home, and it has been stationary on my shelf for about a year now, and the gold still just "hangs" in the vodka.
    Also when using it in cocktails the gold drops to the bottom when you mix any other liquid in the vodka.

    Why not put the gold in the half that you put in the measuring cup then stir and finally pour the altered whiskey back into the bottle?

    I wonder if Ralphie died a bit inside when you carbonated Poundland* wine. (*Probably wasn't but might as well have been.)
    Are you sure that this was actually pure (well 99%) gold? I would be worried about that it the Chinese had manage to "mislabel" it.

    I bought a bottle of the gold flake smirnoff (because shiny things..) and I remember it being slightly thicker. It was a cinnamon flavour if I recall and it was almost syrupy, but only slightly. I thought it was to keep the flakes suspended, but may have been a consequence of the flavouring

    I have a few bottles of Smirnoff vodka with gold leaf. I can confirm that the leaf never settles, and the vodka has a slightly thicker viscosity than normal.
