  • OLYMPICS 2024: "We are a country that no longer values performance" - Germany's sporting decline
In an interview with WELT, Thomas Sattelberger, former Parliamentary State Secretary of the FDP, criticizes the poor performance of German athletes as a reflection of Germany's general downward trend in economic competitiveness. Sattelberger sees a connection between the lack of importance of competitive sport in Germany and the nation's decline in international comparison.
A major problem is the inadequate funding of sport. While countries like Great Britain provide significant funds for certain sports, German sports funding is comparatively low. Sattelberger warns that this trend has been going on for decades, with the expansion of the welfare state and the reduction of funding for competitive sport and the economy. He stresses that it could take at least eight years, i.e. two Olympics, before Germany can catch up with the top again. A key point here is the appreciation and remuneration of coaches, who are currently often moving abroad because they find better conditions there.
It is clear that extensive reforms are necessary to bring German sport back to a top international level. The question is whether Germany is ready to tackle these challenges and make the necessary changes.
