    My current razors are the Assured butterfly from Dollar Tree and the Merkur 25c and the Merkur 39c. Yes I'm aware that the Merkurs aren't usually recommended for new shavers but some reviewers /users recommend them because they are efficient rather than aggressive. Thoughts?

  • @nicetna2010

    Useful video. For those interested, TTO razors should be oiled with 3-in-1 oil every three months. Apply the oil at both hinges, on both doors, and through the top and bottom to lube the open/close mechanism. One drop at each location is all it takes. This helps ensure smooth operation and longevity.

    These are very nice razors for beginners (i started out with an Edwin Jagger DE89 Kelvin). I wasn't getting the results I had hoped to get, but after using a variety of other razors wished I had started out with an adjustable razor first. Adjustable safety razors can provide a very mild shave (best for beginners) to a moderately aggressive shave (for those with thicker beard growth). So, if you're hoping to try wet shaving maybe consider these adjustable safety razors --
    Merkur 'Progress' (various sizes) - continuously adjustable safety razor for around $55 shipped from Connaught Shaving UK
    Merkur 'Futur' (various finishes) -- a more aggressive continuously adjustable safety razor for around $67 shipped from Connaught Shaving UK
    Parker 'Variant' (various finishes) -- continuously adjustable safety razor for around $58 (plus shipping) from various sources
    Rockwell '6C' -- adjustable plate system safety razor (which may not be as convenient for some) for around $50 (plus shipping) from various sources
    Viking's Blade 'Crusader' -- Gillette 'Fatboy' inspired continuously adjustable safety razor for around $57 (plus shipping) from various sources
    Ming Shi 2000S -- Chinese Merkur 'Futur' clone -- continuously adjustable safety razor for around $10-20 (plus shipping) from various sources (including AliExpress)
    Ming Shi 3000S -- Chinese Gillette 'Fatboy' inspired continuously adjustable safety razor for around $10 (plus shipping) from AliExpress -- search for 'faroot adjustable razor'
    Of these, I'd perhaps recommend the Parker 'Variant' (due to it's improvements based on the Merkur 'Progress') or the Rockwell '6C' for a beginner.
    Yes, most of these are more expensive than an Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34C (or cheaper clones of those razors from Italian Barber, Maggard Razors, West Coast Shaving and other sources), but adjustable razors will better suit your skill level, beard growth and (in my experience) lessen any need to buy other safety razors -- making it (perhaps) a better long term investment.
    If most of these are still our of your budget, one of the cheapest options is the 'Assured Double-Edge Safety Razor with 5 Blades' from Dollar Tree for only $1 (if you have a Dollar Tree store in your area and they have them in stock). It's not adjustable, but it's a very affordable safety razor to consider.

      @MarkSzorady  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, an adjustable razor is another way to start.:) I especially like using an adjustable razor because, although my shave may be completed after only two passes, I can dial it all the way down and still do an enjoyable third ATG pass.:)

    Hi Mark, thanks for the videos, I'm learning a lot! My issues with the EJ are its high cost for a beginner razor and the screw tends to break off in the handle if dropped ;that's unacceptable for a $30 razor... Schone, high cost. Fatip Grande, there are several reports of QC issues, version 1 heads? I'm in the market for another 2 budget razors and the Chieftain Jr is on the list, along with the Feather Popular, Timor 1327, Weishi,), Lord A6 and the Wilkinson #Sword Classic. Which 2 would you pick and why?

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Duncan Wynn Jr. I'd pick the Chieftain, Jr. for sure.:) Given Vikings Blade's tracke record on quaility, the razor is goingot be spot on for bladd alignment and balance. If not, for whatever reason, Vikings Blade will stand behind it.
      The Lord A6 is nice and mild, but be aware of the lightweight handle. It might throw you off just a bit. I prefer heavier handles so the razor does all the work. I liked the shave.:)
      I've heard good things about the Wilkinson Sword, but have never used one.
      I was also impressed by the mildness of the Classic Samurai CS-201: th-cam.com/video/xgiolDvaUsM/w-d-xo.html
      You can find it on Amazon at: th-cam.com/video/xgiolDvaUsM/w-d-xo.html
      I can't really speak to the Q/C on this one, though. The CS-201 I received gave a nice mild shave. At just under $15.00, you may get one that is milder or one that is a bit more aggressive. But of the four Classic Samurai razors I own, this one is the mildest.
      Lastly, the best bet for a good, low cost razor is to keep a lookout for a vintage Gillette Super Speed at yard sales, estate sales, etc. Some wet shavers come across these at yard sales in great condition for only a couple of bucks. Again, it might take some time to find this kind of deal, but simply keep it in mind and always be on the lookout.:)

    • @bronzedragon18
      @bronzedragon18 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkSzorady So if I understand you correctly, your picks are the VB Chieftain Jr and the Classic Samurai CS-201 with a honorable mention for the Lord A6 and the Gillette Super Speed, if I can find one. You've no experience with the Wilkinson Sword Classic or presumably the Feather z, Timor and the Weishi. Noted and again many thanks.!

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bronzedragon18 Yes, I think that's about correct.. However, I cannot vouch for the consistent Q/C on the Samurai 201. I can state that the Q/C on Vikings Blade razors is quite consistent and with a good track record. Additionally, VB's customer service is excellent. they'll make it right if anything is amiss. Lord A6 is terrific, but has a lightweight handle. So, shaving technique needs to be adjusted for this. Super Speeds are wonderful! I only mention because the trick is getting one in good condition at a good price.

    Hi Mark! Just came across this video. I bought a Vikingsblade vulcan after watching several of your videos. I like the longer handle over the chieftain. What a great razor. It’s considered a mild razor, right? Same head as the Chieftain? I went through trial and error with lots of different blades and finally settled on Astra green. Michael, thanks for the kind words.:) Yes, the Vulcan and Chieftain, as I understand it, have the same razor head. The Chieftain and the Vulcan are rated as Neutral by Vikings Blade. I often refer to them as Goldilocks razors...not too aggressive, not too mild, just right.:) It's great trying out different blades (one of the great things about shaving with a safety razor). glad to hesr you've found a few that pair up well with the Vulcan.:)

    It might be because I had been using straights razor for three years before buying a few safety razors to mix it up a bit but I really can't tell the difference between the supposedly more "aggressive" or "milder" razors. Thank you.:) I own a Baxter of California razor which is a re-branded Mhle R89. A terrific razor for sure. Back when I purchased it, it cost about 50 bucks. The Muhle R89, at that time, ran about the same price. But in this video, I wanted to talk about mild razors at lower, more affordable prices.:) So I discussed razors that were priced between 20 and 30 dollars (give or take five bucks or so.)
      However, in crafting my answer to you, and doing some quick research, I now notice that the price for an R89 is about $35.00. amzn.to/2HdPEJG
      So, next time around, I'l include the Baxter ( to sit in for the Muhle) given the price has changed. Or, perhaps I'll simply get a Muhle R89.:)

    Hi Mark! My experience with safety razors is extremely limited to first few tries as a teen with crappy equipment and few other tries later on with multi blade cartridge razors. All resulted in a horrible razor burn with acne brake out . I’ve been using electric philips norelco for many years (top of the line for -$250-300) . Now that i have a beard (not long) I clean up cheek and neck lines with same electric razor that’s not as efficient as it used to be (replacement blades are horrible for these models). So in order of avoiding buying new expensive electric shaver, I’m thinking of trying safety razor again . Which would you recommend for better maneuvering cleaning up neck line under beard and cheeks. Also fixed head or adjustable? I was looking at Viking chieftain and Edwin jagger . What would you recommend? Or should I consider straight razor for that purpose (like dovo or other German brands)? Thank you! (Ed)

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, azesm.:) Your reasons for leaving the electric razor behind were my exact reasons as well.:) I first used a Vikings Blade Chieftain and loved it from the get-go! Terrific razor. Yes, Edwin Jagger razors are wonderful, too. The Chieftain is more efficient and has more heft which, in my opinion, really helps. My brother wanted a good razor to clean his neck and beard line and chose the Chieftain Jr. He really likes it. It's milder than the regular Chieftain. He wanted the milder quality to avoid irritating his neck. Also, the newer Chieftain 5 BC is heavier than the original Chieftain and really smooth. End tabs of the blade are exposed a bit whereas the original Chieftain encloses the tabs. Personal preference really. Also Globalsh ve.clb has some really nice efficnet razors. The Ice and Steam razors are favorites. They are smooth and efficient 3-piece razors. Ice is more efficient than Steam. And, as GSC claims, both are a bit more efficient than an Edwin Jagger.

      Mark Szorady thank you So much for your detailed response and great suggestions! Are there any particular products that you would recommend for pre and post shave that would make the experience safe and smooth? Thank you!!! Ed

    What do you think about the Van Der Hagen razor sold in stores in terms of how mild it is? I've had about 10 shaves using it with 4 different blades now and am still cutting my neck up despite trying both hot and cold shaves as well as better shaving cream. I'm thinking maybe I need a less mild razor but also it's possible the Van Der Hagen is just as mild as the razors in this video which means my technique is just bad.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adam, the Van Der Hagen razor is a re-branded Wieshi razor. The Weishi runs about the same price, give or take a few bucks and features. Generally speaking, it's a reliable shaver and does a decent job. As I recall from my own use, the shaves were efficient and I never nicked myself. I don't recall it being overly aggressive. It's a reliable razor. Truthfully, I need to shave with it again to refresh my memory of it. But, I certianly don't recall it being overly aggressive and nicking and cutting me.
      However, this is a razor that I place in the bargain category. With lower cost, bargain razors there's always the possibility of getting one that might be a bit "off." Some wet shavers might get a razor that gives an incredibly sooth shave, while others might get one that is only so-so. Also, there's a YMMV component. That So-So razor for one, might be an exceptional razor for another due to skin and beard differences.
      Now, the first question is, are you doing the proper prep? Are you using a good shaving soap? a good brush? Are you using a pre-shave soap or cream? All these elements help considerably. Also, you may want to try a coated blade if not already doing so...something that is platinum coated, etc.
      Astra Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades ,100 Count (Pack of 1): amzn.to/2WtS8LN
      Lord Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades, 100 blades (5x20): amzn.to/3gq2KCw
      If you're doing this, then you may need a milder razor. I can recommend a few.
      the Merkur HD 34C is quite mild and an exceptional razor. The shave angle is a bit narrower than most so you have ot be spot on with shaving angle and technique. But, it does a great job and is loved by wet shavers the world over: amzn.to/2V978gC
      the listing says "Mk" andnot "HD," but this is the razor.
      The Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr. A terrifc mild razor, nice weight, TTO butterfly and deleivers a mild shave. also a bit longer than the Weishi.VDH: amzn.to/3mclTLo
      Edwin Jagger DE89L: Another razor loved by wetshavers all over the world. A bitmore aggressive than the 34C, but still delivers a good mild to mid-aggression shave: amzn.to/33onqqp
      Make sure to check their pricing...all the razors with the exception of thier SS razor, use the same razor head. So, you might be able to save a few bucks simply by selecting a different handle.
      The Vikings Blade Godfather Stonehenge. I love the razor. Lots of heft, stainless steel handle and cap, and a mild, mild shave. The end tabs of the razor blade are enclosed in the razor head. A plus for those who might be concerned with nicking themselves from the blade tab sticking out too far. This razor is afavorite of mine due to it's mild, yet efficient, shave: amzn.to/3fJ6nUV

    I'm surprised you put Fatip in the "Mild " category. I'd at least call it medium I don't believe it's anywhere close to a Gillette Tech and that's MILD LOL

      I have a fatip razor that was made after 2017. As I understand it, the petite razors made prior to 2017 were quite aggressive. After 2017 they became much milder. However, YMMV.:). For me, it's been a mild yet efficient razor.

      Gotcha but since it's an Op n Comb is it safe to say its medium rather than mild?

      It also came as a surprise to me -- I know some gents who consider the Fatip OC too aggressive for daily shaving. There is also a Fatip CC which might be milder -- or not. I think it's an immortal myth that OCs are by default more aggressive than CCs. It may be the design (the teeth or blunt, but they may look scary) or the wording ("open comb" sounds a bit like "open razor", which is another word for straight razor), but there are many mild OC razors. The Merkurs 15 and 25 c are mild. The aggressive Mühle R41 isn't even a true OC in its current version. I have a Parker CC and I cut myself badly with it, repeatedly. Two dots on the leg, both 3 mm in diameter, and a 4 cm scratch in the armpit. It took three months for the one in the armpit and six months for the ones on the leg to disappear. For comparison, I also use a straight razor, and while I did cut myself with it a couple of times, the cuts couldn't hold a candle to those I got from the Parker CC.

    In my opinion the EJ89 is not mild.
    I own at least 20 different razors. And the EJ89 is not mild.
    I am aware that most people think of it as mild and actually that is why I bought it some years back.
    Actually it was one of my first razors.
    Every razor that followed I bought with the intention of being milder.

      Chalk this up to YMMV. or, you could have gotten one tht was out of spec? I own several EJs and they are all consistently the same mild shave quality. Although I've found the short-handled EJs to be a bit more efficient, but no more aggressive than the other EJs in my stable.:)

      I have bought my Gem Micromatic OC after I viewed one of your videos on that razor and I thank you for that.
      I am able to get a better shave and with almost no irritation with the GEM than with the EG89.And the is definitely more aggressive.
      I am an experienced shaver.
      Same thing with the Mercure Progress.No problem. Works every time.
      I actually am a little frustrated because of it.
      The EJ89 is beautiful and am not going to give it away. No chance.
      I’ll probably give it a another chance.
      Maybe even tomorrow.
