If you want a cheap laugh and somehow haven't already seen it, I *strongly* recommend looking up "The B*tch Fight of Canary Wharf." Here on youtube. I didn't think it was possible to make that scene funnier, but someone did!
The "get out of me pub" part was from a British soap called Eastenders. Barbra Windsor (the woman) was on the show for a couple of years from the 2000's till the 2010's. Love it when DW gets actual British shows to tie in.
Barbara Windsor wasn't just on Eastenders, for about 20 years she very much was Eastenders. She was also in a number of the Carry On films back in the 70s and 80s.
What's even better is that the character referenced as a ghost - "Dirty" Den Watts was a great villainous character who got (apparently) murdered by his wide- who was played by Tracy Ann Obermann who is in this episode.
The shot of the Cybermen ripping through the plastic construction sheets is an homage to a classic Doctor Who story “Tomb of the Cybermen” where the 2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton ) watched a group of Cybermen break out of their tombs in a similar manner
The cliffhanger after this episode is perhaps the best cliffhanger there has been since 2005. Music plays such a big part, with the Cybermen theme playing before the ghosts are revealed to be Cybermen and it seamlessly segues into the Dalek theme just before they are revealed - it’s series 2, so most viewers are the time would not have recognised the music only having heard it a few times last series! Doctor Who is amazing at cliffhangers - this one is my favourite!
It's kind of crazy seeing your reactions to certain things, because you actually have fewer spoilers than we did when we watched the shows at release. For example, it was always big news when an actor stepped down from a major role in Doctor Who, like with Christopher Eccleston, so we knew that David Tennant was replacing him at the end of the season well in advance and it wasn't a surprise to anyone when he regenerated.
Yeah, another example is in this episode, the Daleks were spoiled by the next time trailer from the previous episode because it had a shot of someone being exterminated
SPOILER S2 E13 (next episode) Of course, after having written the earlier comment really carefully to avoid giving away any hint about Rose's departure in the next episode, it now occurs to me that Emme is actually several weeks ahead on Patreon and has in fact, already seen it.
Your first reaction to the beginning with Rose saying how she died was just like those of us watching for the first time. With all the surprises in this episode it keeps you on the edge of your seat, and without giving any "spoilers", there will be even more. Can't wait until you start "Torchwood".
3:29 - you kept your computer on for the same reason why people watched the movie about the Titanic. Everyone knew what would happen to the ship, the story is what happens before. 9:25 - you should watch the first Ghostbusters film (1984). It is a classic, combining both horror and humor. 19:19 - your expression! 24:00 - Why do they keep surviving? Because you can't keep a good villain down
I absolutely adore these reactions, I love how much you’re enjoying this show mate! These first four seasons especially have such an unbelievably special place in my heart, getting to share someone else’s first reaction to it all is so cool! Thanks for doing what you’re doing!✨
Just so you know, the Cybermen are one of the big recurring enemies from the original series, so, yes, lots of people expected they would show up again.
"Mickey Smith, defending the Earth." I love when glorified background characters (as Mickey was in the first episode) get heroic character arcs. Even Jackie's getting a little of that treatment, starting with her huge construction machine she got a hold of in The Parting of the Ways, the previous series finale, and continuing in this episode with her gaining confidence walking in the Doctor's world.
Seeing Mickey with all that bravery and courage make me wonder how long it has been for him and how long it been since we last saw him and he last said goodbye to Rose and The Doctor. It look like it been years now. The Daleks are like when the hero defeats them, they somehow get lucky and find a way to survive. That why they keep coming back.
Why the Daleks keep surviving is down to the small fact that those willy little pepper shakers are the fan's favorite baddies. And you gotta admit, they are cool bad guys, especially now that they have master stairs. 🤣🤣🤣
3:07 they do a great job of creating anxiety right away. It’s just mean. lol. 23:48 one more thing to worry about. You were so done with it Enjoyed your reaction.
I have seen these episodes when they first came out, but the appearance of the Daleks at the end gave me goosebumps... and that almost never happens to me anymore.
"Location, Earth. Life forms detected. Exterminate! DALEKS: Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!" Err, yeah. Daleks and Cybermen, they are screwed. I still remember being completely in shock when the Daleks flew out of the sphere. What a cliffhanger.
This two-parter was my son's favourite when he was 6 or 7, and he wanted to watch it over and over, which meant I got to see it over and over as well. The amazing thing is that I still enjoyed it afterwards, even when I could quote it word-for-word...
3:23 The fact she's narrating should give you hope, no? 7:20 No, their shape shoved into the universe looks humanoid. It doesn't mean they're faking anything
As it's currently the Euro's, and we're at these episodes, it sparked a memory of back when I was 10 and these were 1st airing. Don't know if they still do these for the show, but most weeks the 'Radio Times' (TV Guide) would dedicate their cover to that episode. Anyway.. on the week that 'Doomsday' aired, the anticipation was already high since the Daleks and Cyberman, despite being 2 of the Doctor's Top 3 Big Bad's, would be encountering each other for the first time *EVER* in the history of the show. There was also probably a Football tournament going on at the time too, because that week you could get a variant cover of either Daleks OR Cybermen, both shown as opposing teams. Just one of those iconic images that's stuck with me ever since, can remember finding it so cool and funny at that age😄
Hello Emme, nice to see you continuing your Doctor Who adventures!😊I am pretty sure this is the first time the Cybermen and Daleks have appeared together. Definitely on this scale, at least. Great reactions to part one of this crazy episode, Emme!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This was the biggest cliffhanger at the time and the start of a bigger shared Doctor Who universe. The monster of the week never shared an episode! This was a huge crossover of villains. And next episode is amazing. The ending is classic.
Doctor left Rose in the TARDIS because he trusted her to handle herself and investigate while everyone is focused on him. I always forget that Freema Agyeman is in this episode, before she becomes a companion. Not the last time that happens. The Fires of Pompeii has two actors who return for major roles.
The Daleks have seemed to be wiped out 6 times, I believe, over the years from their first appearance. Every time the Doctor beats them, somehow enough of them escape to rebuild the race. There is always an explanation why the Doctor thought they were all gone and how it is that they aren't. I guess the fans just love them so much as the bad guys, that the writers keep bringing them back.
It's a fairly minor thing, and I normally wouldn't bring it up, but this is *Series 2* rather than *Season 2*. For any other show the distinction wouldn't matter but with Doctor Who "Season" is used very specifically to refer to both Classic Who (The stuff before the 9th Doctor), and the new Disney + backed era. So this won't surface as easily in searches for "Series 2" (which is what it is) and will probably be lost in the fairly near future among videos related to the upcoming actual "Season 2"
"Cybermen, who thought they would come back again." Didn't think I'd hear anyone saying this in 2024 :D I guess as a Nuwho first time watcher this is a reasonable sentiment. 😅

Apparently when the doctor went the wrong way that was actually not in the script and David just went the wrong way and was saved from doing another take by the actress playing Yvonne in the moment
Emme: "Why in hell do the daleks keep surviving?" - The Doctor has asked this question many times. The daleks and cybermen are both staples of the classic series, but this is only the second time they've been in the same story.
