Linnell: "DUDE WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY AND WHY IS HE ON THE MOON" Flans, mad chillin': "man idgaf, dude's chillin' on the moon, badass, plus it's not my problem."
Mind-blowing lyrics for sure. I used to think it was "chipped away the line." But after I read this, it blew my mind. You're right. Wow. That's genius. A rock that spoke a word...
“The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, *I just have to chisel away the superfluous material* ” ― Michelangelo
I realize that Wayne Terrell posted his comment 5 years before I read it, but the reason TMBG videos look like Pete and Pete is because Adam Bernstein was a director for both.
The lyrics of this song are literally perfect I am 100% serious this song is absolutely one of the most mind bending pieces of music ive ever heard and its all the juxtaposition of the instrumental to the cryptic lyrics. TMBG for life
I recently tried to send a list of my favourite TMBG songs to a friend to check out and it ended up like 30 songs long and I was sure I forgot some very important songs on there. It's so hard to pinpoint a favourite because a lot of the songs are so different and it depends what mood you're in. I love things like this and you're on fire when they need a good beat and you're in a bit of a crazy head banging mood, then other times some lucky ball and chain or lie still, little bottle just hits the spot for a jazzy or country change then there's like unpronounceable or rhythm section want ad. Lots off nanobots or flood are good to listen to if you want to hear something and go "dafuq does that mean?" I honestly can't pick a favourite but maybe canajoharie? Oh or ecnalubma! I lose my shit when that comes on 😂. Edit: answer and she's an angel are also amazing. For a softer sentimental vibe. And I love "am I awake?" Because it's just sortof depressing and sad and I love the video clip with like the news anchor and that in it.
These lyrics should go straight into the anthology of American literature. Lorenzo da Ponte would surely be proud of these guys who wrote such a masterpiece.
I would give anything to sit in a meeting where they came up with ideas for this. "Well for "the statue got me high" it seems obvious we go for a tea cup and perhaps lots of references to the solar system and astronoughts"
AfromanJon It's the much-coveted Mojo Chessmaster. Flansburgh designed it himself and it was built by Chris Cush of Mojo Guitar Shop (which has since closed).
That is the best guitar I've ever seen. I want to know where they find their instruments the mutes on the trumpets in "Birdhouse in Your Soul" (that might not be the right title) are awesome too.
The statue got me high The statue got me high The monument of granite sent a beam into my eye The statue made me die The statue made me die It took my hand it killed me and it turned me to the sky The stone it called to me (And now I see the things the stone has shown to me) A rock that spoke a word (An animated mineral it can be heard) And though I once preferred a human being's company They pale before the monolith that towers over me The statue got me high The statue got me high The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie The statue made me fry The statue made me fry My coat contained a furnace where there used to be a guy The stone it called to me (And now I see the things the stone has shown to me) A rock that spoke a word (An animated mineral it can be heard) And as the screaming fire engine siren filled the air The evidence had vanished from my charred and smoking chair And what they found was just a statue Standing where the statue got me high And what they found was just a statue Standing where the statue got me high And now it is your turn (Your turn to hear the stone and then your turn to burn) The stone it calls to you (You can't refuse to do the things it tells you to) And as the screaming fire engine siren fills the air The evidence will vanish from your charred and smoking chair And what they found was just a statue Standing where the statue got me high And what they'll find is just a statue Standing where the statue got you high
At the moment it has two meanings to me... One is quite literally a possibly exaggerated story about a certain "statue". The other is basically about knowing someone is going to experience your bizarre emotions concerning certain events, people, things, situations etc... The same way you did
Think the other car is a Cadillac? Because that would be a hilarious callback to Beep Beep by the Playmates - although the Nash was a Rambler in that one. th-cam.com/video/ayTJtVzHOLs/w-d-xo.html
A llot of their early videos were directed by Adam Bernstein, who did a LOT of work on Pete & Pete. This video has shots that look straigh out of that show.
One of the songs where they both perform vocals which is a huge plus, as well as the big band / ska sounds add an even cooler element than normal. I also love the skateboarding Astronaut, just gonna say it.
It's been twelve years since I posted this, and I can't for the life of me figure out where I made the connection between John Linnell and Rick Astley. If anybody has any ideas, let me know.
I love the skater-nauts! Did anyone else think of Greased Lightning when the two 50's cars took off down the flood channel at 1:48? Was this filmed in the LA river? looks like it...
Same here. My cousin showed me their Tiny Toon videois...I didn;t get into the craze much later though. The same cousin gave my sister A User's Guide to TMBG, which she hated, and I swiped. Molto bene.

i still love the part where John is all "IMPORTANT URGENT STUFF GRARR GRARR" into the phone and on the other end John is all AHAHAHA

Linnell: "DUDE WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY AND WHY IS HE ON THE MOON"

'The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie' is, I think, my favorite line in any song.
It's a brilliant commentary on an artist's intentions for their art.

They continually downplay the genius of their lyrics. That's commendable. So much to love.
TMBG is magical. Because they have never specifically tried to be "cool," they've ironically ended up being way cooler than most.
This isn't my favorite TMBG song, but it's the one that brings me more joy than any other.

TMBG is the greatest group ever. It's that simple.
Still high to this day.
Been learning the accordion part on harmonica for giggles. Dang, what a jam.
I got high with a statue once. ONCE!
The statue got me high
The statue got me high
The monument of granite sent a beam into my eye
The statue made me die
The statue made me die
It took my hand it killed me and it turned me to the sky
The stone it called to me
(And now I see the things the stone has shown to me)
A rock that spoke a word
(An animated mineral it can be heard)
And though I once preferred a human being's company
They pale before the monolith that towers over me
The statue got me high
The statue got me high
The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie
The statue made me fry
The statue made me fry
My coat contained a furnace where there used to be a guy
The stone it called to me
(And now I see the things the stone has shown to me)
A rock that spoke a word
(An animated mineral it can be heard)
And as the screaming fire engine siren filled the air
The evidence had vanished from my charred and smoking chair
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And now it is your turn
(Your turn to hear the stone and then your turn to burn)
The stone it calls to you
(You can't refuse to do the things it tells you to)
And as the screaming fire engine siren fills the air
The evidence will vanish from your charred and smoking chair
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And what they'll find is just a statue
