I used to have a puli. He had cords for the first few years, but it was too much maintenance for my family. We had him shaved. Because we then kept his hair cut short, he looked a bit like a Portuguese water dog, only smaller and cuter! We had him groomed about 4 times a year. In winter, we let his hair grow longer in order to keep him warm. On days when the temperatures went below zero celcius, we would put a coat on him whenever we went outside. He was the most affectionate and loyal dog we ever owned. On the negative side, he had separation anxiety whenever we left him alone. He had a gentle disposition - he liked everyone, and everyone liked him. He was great with children and very protective. He lived to the ripe old age of 15. Terrific breed to have as a family pet.

This is a great post for Puli owners so I’m linking it in the Facebook Puli group I belong to for new Puli owners. I love that you also use the “Settle” command and sit him between your legs on the floor, I thought I was the only one who groomed my Puli Lexx like this. We also taught Lexx the command “Shake it Out” to make it easier to dry him when we bathe him, and also to help him get snow or lake/creek water off when we go outside.

Thanks for sharing with the Puli group! And greetings to Lexx :)
Data actually does shake it out after a bath whether or not I tell him to, I actually put him in an old t shirt for a bit so the water doesn't go everywhere.

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing. I have an 18 month old Hungarian puli name, Mazzy. She’s white, and her dirt shows up so much! I try to only be with her every couple of months though. Anyway, that’s beside the point…
My question is whether you take the time to trim the sides of the cords in order to shape them. I know some people do this, but we haven’t for a while. I still separate them and remove debris regularly. But, in terms of shaping, I’m getting a little lazy ha ha. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes, I do try to give the shape of a bit shorter cords near his stomach sloping into longer cords on his front/back leg area, but it's not a science for me, just something I keep in mind when I'm trimming those cords. I also tend to pull the cords away from his body to the sides when I cut them so they get a "layered" look when they fall back towards the ground - something I do when I cut my kids hair as well :)
