Unless Shell is the same price or cheaper than your cheapest local gas, you're overpaying for gas. You probably have an older car with carbon buildup on the injectors/spark plugs. All you need is a $5 fuel additive once in a while that will give you the same results.

You missed his point. Scotty’s point is you don’t have to worry about getting bad gas in the USA usually because if you did it would mean the whole refinery was contaminated which isn’t likely. Additives make a difference but no gas company is going to sabotage their gas. His point wasn’t that additives and gas companies are the same, it was that you’re not likely to get bad gas bc most of it comes from the same play within a specific area.

@@captinbeyond Gas has a shelf life. If the gas was old, it probably would have been pumped out. The tanks might have even been cleaned before reopening. Depending on how fast the station turned over, it could potentially be "blended off" with incoming fuel deliveries that would be dosed with the proprietary Exxon additive package onsite. Scotty: Thanks as always and keep up the great work!! Having worked in the oil refining business for a major firm plus have known many friends in the oil industry would disagree somewhat with your take on this. You are correct as to gas quality from the major refiners. The key difference however between the majors and the "no names" is the additive package. One reason the gas from the "no names" is cheaper is this gas is often missing many of those additives. The so-called "Top Tier" gas (all major refiners such as Chevron, BP, Exxon, etc.) will give you cleaner intake valves with less deposits according to a friend with AAA when they evaluated different gasoline brands.

I always use the no ethanol premium for my small engines. Lawn mowers, boat motor, weed eater, etc. When that ethanol gas evaporates in the carb between uses it leaves a hard residue that builds up until it clogs jets and the carb in general.

I'm a Shell V-power (93 octane) fan and various stations around the Midwest have always performed well.
I tuned my SVT Focus with it and filled up with 93 from another (admittedly not popular brand) station once on the other side of Chicago and was pinging like crazy to the point the knock sensor was backing off timing to save the motor. Had to detune and run through the entire tank before I could reload the custom tune...and yes I tried an octane booster was a complete waste of 5 bucks did nothing even after driving a bit to prime the fuel line.
Basically if you tune a vehicle on the edge of 93 octane (or using fuel that actually measures beyond 93 since that is only the MINIMUM guaranteed rating) you risk issues if you go to shitty fuel that is even slightly less octane than what you are tuned for.

If it all comes from the same distribution point, how is it more " top tier " over others that put additives into the fuel like Chevron? If I run am/pm Arco in my carbureted vehicle it'll be black sooty inside. If I run Chevron, it'll be spotless clean. I would think that wouldn't be too good for injectors over time.

@@MrDLRu top tier is an industry standard that most but not all gasoline qualifies. Look for the symbol on the pump "Top Tier". Basically it just ensures that it has a "good" additives package. Costco gas is a top tier detergent gas at the cheapest price! Win; win! Costco is the best!

I commute 40K+ per year. Half the time I fill up at Costco. Occasionally, my car runs rough after filling up. I have never had this problem with Costco gas.

There is some kind of difference. My 2024 Crosstrek 2.5, will run on even the crappiest regular with 0 pinging, although it gets slightly better mileage on Chevron. My mother's 2018 Sonata 2.4, loves Sinclair or Pilot for some reason.
Years ago I had a 96 Dodge Dakota and it liked Chevron the best, notably smoother idle and would ping like crazy on the "same" mid grade Shell or anything like Arco, Mobile etc.
My mother had a used 98 Monte Carlo from Hertz and it also ran on anything. That Monte Carlo got an honest 30mpg from the 3.1ltr V6, but typical of GM, it needed the top end taken apart and new gaskets installed at 120k miles... 🙄 Lots of those late 90s, GM V6s did that.
A 2007 Ford Focus, didn't like anything... It pinged on anything. Special Note: Thank you Ford... for putting the alternator only 1/2 inch / 12mm from the exhaust manifold, to insure premature alternator failures...

I learned my lesson taking my vehicles to Fast Oil & Lube places they over torqued my drain plug and stripped it..I called corporate and they sent me a check for the cost of a new oil pan & labor ($500.00) went to Pep Boys & bought a oversized threaded drain plug for $4.00..

Go to stations that carry Top Tier rated gas. It has the most additives and highest quality.

I never could disagree on that. On my facebook group, a lot of members there are having fuel system problems (with the injectors i suppose) but only with 50k-60k miles on them. When I asked them about the fuel they use, neither of them used top tier. So I guess it has something to do with the fuel.

Scotty. I'm 16 years old and I want to invest in a car. The thing is, I don't have much money. I did one summer job and earned about $2k USD. I don't care about if the car is a truck, sedan, or a coupe, just want something that I can get around with. How much should I spend?

As much as you have or can save. 5k would be better, but you may find a good buy at 2 to 3k from a private party. Ask your family members if they know anyone wanting to get rid of their old car. You might be able to pay then more than they would get for trade in value at a dealership.

I think more people should read their car manual to see what gas they should use I mean when I got my car I checked it and it said don't use gas using MMT and use top tier detergent gas in north america and after some research shell plus mobile one gas station have some detergents in them prolonging the life of the engine
