Depends on what you already have. The ones I suggested are smoother than a rtr traxxas esc as an example. You can race with whatever to start though. RTR Reedy esc is great as well. You are much better off buying tires that work at the track you are racing at. Tires are more important than a new esc for sure.
Don't buy no name anything, just buy from reputable companies. You may have to pay more, but you will only have to buy once. If your electronics are going to shit on you, it will be when you are having a good day.
