“Danish” cake is called Wienerbread in Denmark, which might give a hence where it originated. Back in the 1850s a strike among bakers in Denmark enforced bakers to labor foreign bakers. Austrian bakers came to Denmark and brought with them the Austrian traditions of bread baking, but the Danes evolved the traditional Austrian variant by adding cream, jam and other fillings.
Btw, what I have seen in the USA called ‘Danish’ has absolutely nothing to do with the traditional Danish in Denmark. Absolutely nothing.

Perhaps related the to French word "VIennoiserie" - "Viennese things" - the word use for all flakey type of pastries there.
Also in Norway we call it "Wienerbrød".
Fun trivia: Frankfurters - aka "hot dogs" - we call those "Viennese sausage"...or just "WIener" for short. (however the Viennese call them Frankfurter).

@@persimonsen8792 The "fastelavensbolle" is a bit different (whipped cream, strawberry jam, powdered sugar).
The skolebrød is a fluffy bun like pastry with icing, sprinkled with coconut shavings and the eggy center filling.
God knows why it is called skolebrød - but it is a staple of all cafes, conditors, bakers and cafeterias. Excellent with a cup of coffee.
Technically I would call what we see in the google pictures a "skolebolle" and not "brød". The "skolebrød" is the exact same thing but instead of being round it is a stretched oval about 3x the size. And thus have much more of the yellow eggy goodness.
But now it is becoming very technical! =D

You're cute when you're confused 😂 But for you (and anyone else watching who is as confused as you) here are the answers to all the questions so you don't have to look through several comments to find out (plus a bit of extra trivia because I'm generous like that):
    1. Yes and no. Danishes are made with a yeast dough into which fat, most often butter, has been rolled, ie. a laminated dough. It gets flaky from being rolled out, folded together, rolled out, etc. many times. This concept was brought to Denmark in 1850 by Austrian bakers when there was a strike among bakers and the owners of the bakeries were forced to hire outside bakers to keep the bakeries open. However, the Danes loved this kind of bread so much that we quickly adopted it and made it into a Danish speciality. As a nod to the origins, it's called wienerbrød (Vienna bread) in most Nordic countries. In Austria, it's actually called Kopenhagener Plunder or Dänischer Plunder because the baked goods we know today are fairly different from the original recipes. It was a Dane who brought these treats to the US, and allegedly he actually baked wienerbrød (or Danishes, as they became known there) at President Woodrow Wilson's wedding in 1915.
    2. No, we don't pour water on our rye bread before eating. Unless you're making øllebrød, which is a sort of porridge made with stale rye bread, beer and some water. Yes, this is classically served to children, and no, they don't get drunk because the alcohol in the beer cooks off while it's thickening.
    3. Yes, that Little Mermaid, although with a very Disney-fied ending. Frozen is also based on an HC Andersen fairytale written in 1845, The Snow Queen.
    4. The Golden Tower is a 63 metres (about 207 feet) tall attraction in Tivoli, the 3rd oldest amusement park in the world (the oldest amusement park is also in Denmark, btw, it's Bakken north of Copenhagen). You're seated in a rig that pretty much consists of only the seats, hoisted up into the air all the way to the top where it will pause to lure you into a false sense of security, and when you least expect it you're hurtled towards the ground at 144 km/h (about 89.5 mph). Once it gets going it goes up and down a few times, at some points achieving -1G force, making the guests feel weightless.
    5. The soldiers with "fluffy stuff on their heads" are the Queen's Guard (officially The Royal Life Guard), the "fluffy stuff" are bearskin hats made from Canadian black bears worn for ceremonial purposes and when on guard duty outside the Royal Residence.
And no, Trump still can't buy Greenland 😆

    • @Mike-zx1kx
      @Mike-zx1kx ปีที่แล้ว

The Kingdom of Denmark consists of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. We are family and Americans need to realise that the POOtin puppet Trump gave a colonial offer (!), something the world have not seen in hundred years and that should have been a closed chapter in human history. It seems many Americans do not understand the shame this has cast upon your nation. History books do not forget and this will stay as a historical stain forever. Imagine if Denmark offered to buy Florida because they would like to have Cape Canaveral, never taking Floridians into account. Trump said it was "a real estate deal really". NO, it was colonialism! USA are filled with people that are victims of slavery and colonialism. Does not seem like Americans takes lessons from human history. That is more than sad. ANY European government that had suggested same (would not happen) would immediately have been replaced by their populations demands. Denmark are an ally to USA and co founders of NATO. When nuclear and ballistic technology made it possible for Russia to reach mainland USA with long distance missiles, The staunch US ally, Denmark offered USA a spot in Greenland to monitor and counter this threat, free of charge. I can understand POOtin wanted to create a divide between USA and Denmark. Trump was and are HIS weapon. Wake up USA!

Not that I entirely blame him for it, Victorian literature really, really had a thing for pretty young dead women. You know: pale, fragile, silent, in-active and won't ever grow fat or old.
Biased perception on my part probably, but I think I prefer the story where the heroine struggles through some hardships, marries the prince and lives happily ever after. If you feel the story would improve with a cute little boy profoundly dying of hypothermia , okay, whatever rocks your boat.

@@Julia-lk8jn a young woman who perseveres and gets a happy ending is the plot of the Snow Queen. Also there's no pretty young corpse in the Little Mermaid, she turns into sea foam when she dies.
Additionally, snarking on religion for being an opiate of the masses while championing Disney and happy endings is just ironic in the extreme. Like hilariously ironic.
Finally, I recall the deceased protagonist in Beneath the Willow Tree as being male, and that's probably one of the most pitiable and miserable deaths he wrote.

With the little mermaid, Disney took inspiration from H.C Andersens fairy tale, they just made more kid friendly. In the on H.C Andersen wrote, the little mermaid has to make the prince fall in love with her, but the prince falls in love with another person. So instead off making him fall for her, she has to kill him before the sun rises or she will turn into sea foam. Of course she can’t get herself to kill her true and only love, so before the sun rises she jumps into the ocean, and turns into sea foam. Disney made the movie seem like the little mermaid got a happy ending, but she didn’t.
And to the rye bread, I myself is a Dane, and never and I mean never have I seen someone put water on their rye bread.
But we do have something called “Øllebrød” which is this kinda porridge made out of rye bread, water, beer, sugar and cream. To make “Øllebrød” you have to slice the rye bread into smaller pieces, and put it into a bowl. After that you put the water and beer into the bowl. You have to let the rye bread be in the bowl for one hour minimum, it is also fine to let it soak longer, you can put it into the fridge over night, that can make it even better. When it has soaked long enough put up into a pot and cook it up, then you put the sugar in, to get as small amount of lumps use a whisk to stir with. You have to let it cook for at least 20 minutes, you can taste it to see if it needs more sugar, and if you wish it to be thinner put more water into it. Then it is done, with the cream you can make whipped cream to put on top of it. If you want to find a recipe you can look the Danish word up, and translate the ingredients and directions in how to make it, or you could search rye bread porridge then there should come some recipes up in English.

The Little Mermaid is the same as in the movie, correct. Hans Christian Andersen, the guy who write the original Little Mermaid, has also made many other famous fairytales. Probably one of the most famous ones, along with the Little Mermaid of course, being the Ugly Duckling. And no, we don’t put water on rye bread. However we do sometimes mix them to create something entirely different called Øllebrød.

  • @skakdosmer
    @skakdosmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, the two hosts are very Danish!
No, we normally do not put water on our rye bread! If the rye bread (or any other bread) is totally dry, and you have none fresh, you can try a little water and warm it in the oven, and it might become eatable.
I don't know the Disney movie about the little mermaid, but as he was an American my guess is that he's given it a happy ending. The fairytale is very sad.

im pretty sure the water on the rye bread part was just to make a point of the ridicolous long word.
nobody actually pours water on rye bread and then put on toppings like that.
the only time rye bread and water are mixed is when you make øllebrød.
which is delicious with some whipping cream and sugar.
bear is involved if made correct :)

As to my count, there are 46 clips by now. Maybe Amy can react to that series as well. Europe, Africa, South America, The Middle East, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and MARS are in the race. Germany is on No. One (3 clips: Germany, Baden-Württemberg and Ostfriesland)... so that means that you can take part as a Continent, a Country, a Bundesland, a Region or a Planet...
I'm still hoping on contributions from Mexico (as it get's roasted continuously), Pakistan (as India is taking part), North Korea, Russia (as Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia and Lithuania are in). Also more Muslim Countries (so far Morocco, Egypt, Iran). No Country from the Caribbean, none from Central America, none from the South Pacific/Oceania. And what about Microstates? So far only Malta. Also Anarcho Republics/Micronations would be cool, like Christiania, Sealand, Transnistria, Northern Cyprus, Molossia...
