I remember as a kid reading Overstreet and Four Color was so intriguing, even for a superhero kid like me, as every issue merited it’s own entry and price. And even then I was like Action and Detective will never get close to that issue number. It would be quite daunting to collect ‘em all.

Love this video - quick correction on the Uncle Scrooge books (I'm less than 30 issues away from a complete run - there are some COOL things in this series)
The "first" issue of a dedicated Uncle Scrooge in the #4, but the first three are not based on APPEARANCES, they are based on the TITLE being Uncle Scrooge, but the SERIES being Four Color.
What this means is that the two appearances you show prior to Four Color 386 (Uncle Scrooge #1) are actually Donald Duck Issues.
    For Uncle Scrooge:
Four Color 386 (Uncle Scrooge #1)
Four Color 456 (Uncle Scrooge #2)
Four Color 495 (Uncle Scrooge #3)
Uncle Scrooge #4 (Uncle Scrooge #4 ... and so on)
Those Donald Ducks? Well ... that title "started" with "issue" 26 = with issues 1-25 being other series - MOSTLY Four Color, but also a nn and a title called "Large Feature Comics"...
Yeah... I'm a bit of a fan of these :)
Wonderful that you covered them. It's one of my favourite series because it really captures what was happening in the culture at the time. MANY of these books will very likely never be reprinted because of licensing and such. So it is definitely a commitment to try and collect them. To make it even more fun - there are TWO series of Four Color comics - the first series wasn't that many books.

    • @MintHunterComics
      @MintHunterComics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Right you are! There were three uncle scrooge four color books (but were still four color) so when it was time for his own title they just continued off of that! Cheers my friend! Cool collection!

Nice! As an owner of more than a few Four Color comics, very happy to see this. For those wondering why Dell stopped in 1962 with this series, they split from Western Publishing which owned the myriad of licenses composing so many of the 4 Color books. Dell continued to do movie, TV adaptations, as well as forays into horror and superheroes, while Western Publishing turned their licenses over to their in house Gold Key Comics.

The Carl Barks-stories from "Four Colour Comics" (and "Scrooge" + "Donald Duck") in Danish "Donald Duck & Co."-magazines are (like) "keys" here in Denmark.

Absolutely love the comic history videos you do and all the research and references you employ as backup. I know they involve a lot of work for you, but man this stuff fascinates at least a solid minority of us out here who don’t care as much about variant jockstraps worn by Venom or Steve Ditko’s collectible snot residue. You should be a teacher, James, as you really have a gift for communicating in such inspiring and engaging ways. You take little known or virtually unknown facts and figures and translate them into blizzards of mind candy. My only complaint is that this video and others like it aren’t longer. Keep ‘em coming, my friend. -Glen

Trust me, I have done extremely comprehensive research on this discrepancy between the popularity of your videos and it has taken me years (i.e. seconds) to reach an absolute scientific conclusion regarding same. I can now unequivocally and unconditionally state that these comic history videos you produce are fantastic and you should continue doing them. In other words, you and I and anyone else who enjoys them are right and the folks who don’t are WRONG! This is an undisputed fact (which I just made up) and you can’t argue with facts! The end.

My impression of Four Color has always been the literal definition of pop culture. Dell was publishing weekly books with chart topper cartoon and movie characters, in a haphazard approach, slapping on whatever number was next. It was meant to be a comic for what today's kids liked most.

I'm about 700 issues into the 4 Color Volume 2 Run. It's fun. I've found at least one dell book that was had a 4 digit issue number blocked over in black on the cover. I'm assuming Dell was originally going to use it as a FC Issue but gave it it's own title instead. I've also picked up a piece of OA from Spaceman #2 which was originally supposed to be FC 1340 and is noted as such at the top of the page. So much history in this series. I have been collecting them for 25 years since I first found out that Turok #1 and #2 were actually Dell FC 596 and 656. THANKS VALIANT!

Didn't know how the numbering worked at all but now that makes sense. My older comics are some of my favorites. From my Winsor McCay collection of little Nemo and sammy sneeze from 1904-1925ish then my Terry and the pirates collection from the 30s and 40s to my dells and gold keys from the 50s to the 60s like Donald Duck, Henry, Timmy the timid ghost and my favorite comic I own Jonny Quest #1 from 1964. Good stuff I love along side my horror comics and underground Indies.

By far the hardest part of collecting this series is the fact you can't go to the "four color" section in your LCS and sadly most LCS's don't know the difference between Popeye 113 and Dell Four Color 113 (which incidentally is the first original Popeye stories in comics.) The first 100 issues actually had "Four Color Comics" printed very small on the cover. I wonder why they decided to forgo that on future issues? It's not as if it detracted from the title within. Maybe they knew they would make the life of a collector miserable in the future.

Hey I wanted to say thank you for doing this important video. I don't think that Dell comics get the love that they deserve. I'm trying to collect all the Four Color comics volume 2 and I have messaged other podcasters asking them to make a video highlighting Dell comics and I have even found an owner of my LCS who never heard of them. The fans of gratuitous violence in the MCU are a dime a dozen where Dell collectors are a specialized market. Don't get me wrong, l love the others too but I'm afraid the history is being lost in the shuffle. I've had a Facebook member on one of the comic groups who said they weren't real comics and he would throw them in the trash if he was given any as a gift including the Four Color 16 Porky pig and my 386 Uncle Scrooge. I hope to see more from you and would be more than happy to assist you with any information that you could need to do so

Hey Jim do you have any four color comics for sale? I'm one of those nuts trying to put together an entire run of volume 2 and I've gotten a good chunk done in the past two years with many of the key issues you discussed and it's at the point to where I don't collect other titles any more. I'm all in with the Dell four color volume 2 where I can focus all my attention to that solely. I also must say that these books don't get the love or respect they deserve in the comic community. I've had an asshole on Facebook say they're not real comics and if they were given to him he would have thrown them in the trash. I'm sure the guy who made that idiotic statement probably read his first comic book in 2008 when he saw iron man in the theaters and probably laughed at anyone who read comics before that time calling them geeks or whatever, total bandwagoner. I'm rambling on so I would love to request an even more in depth video on the Four color series in the future and I'm local to you and would be more than happy to help if you decide to do so
