Schuyler, I like how you kept the part where pin #3 fell back down in the video, helps newbies realize that sometimes the pins down stay set and that it doesn't mean they are doing it wrong.
As a clumsy beginner, a lack of precision is more often helpful. Often when I set a pin I will also set the pin next to it, and sometimes multiple without even noticing. If I feel I've messed it up I just gradually release some tension, and sometimes an overset pin will fall nicely into place, else just go back to before the error and I can continue without needing to start from the beginning again.
Brilliant. I locked my keys in my room and just managed to pick my way in with a Swiss Army knife and a perfectly straight paperclip. The lock was upside down too. Took me 45 minutes, probably half a life's worth of luck, and my wrist aches like hell. Sure wish I had seen this video first.
try your key. If you feel more friction at that spot then you just need to add more tension when you get to that spot when your picking. There seems to be a lot more friction when the bolt begins to move. Of course if you have the cylinder removed like Schuyler does then...
@flydragon247 Yes, It would be, some methods will use a rake to set most pins and then a hook to set any security pins/pins that didn't set, as long as you are applying the tension when you swap picks over it should be fine.
You mention right before using the deforest hook that the regular hook type would interfere with the 4th pin. I can't quite visualize that, can you elaborate on why the thinner hook is preferable?
@SchulyerTowne at 2:08...what if the fourth one wasn't already set? How would you pass the third pin with your hook in order to reach the fourth pin? Wouldn't the third pin be in the way?
Hey Schuyler, thanks for all your vids. The De Forest seems the can-pick-anything pick including those with non-extreme bittings... your thoughts on that?
The lock is only half cut. There is enough metal casing left so that everything is still working as intended. Look at it again, it's like cutouts have been made.
has anyone had a go at picking padlocks ?? it looks like an awesome skill to have. a bit like solving a puzzle. ihave you learned to do it and how lond did it take ??
This is going to sound dumb but how do you know when the pin is set? What exactly should you be feeling or hearing to know it is done. Also how do the pins stay set when you move on to the next one?
A set pin will be loose (if you are able to shake the lock it should rattle). It should click into place and not feel any more very solid or very springy. The hole below it has moved slightly sideways, so it can no longer be pushed back through.
Also you may notice a slight rotation of the core when a pin is correctly set. Or you may not, don't worry about that. :) But if you do you know you're getting there.
Question: Are the graphics you add showing the different Hooks, Rakes, etc roughly to scale? Or rather more for visual purposes? Great work by the way, thanks.
Hey i was having trouble picking my standard schlage deadbolt, I dont know what is going on but when i do try to pick it the cylinder is able to turn clockwise to about 10 o clock and then binds up and can not turn past 10 o clock what is happening?
Just feel your way along, and if necessary put marks on your pick to tell you how far along you are. In my experience as a beginner, deeper inside the lock than the second or third pin I tend to go a pin too far as also it seemed happened in the video for a moment. If I am confused I stop and count along the pins. Also the pins at the back can seem hard, but I have gone too far and am pressing on solid metal behind them.
Thanks for your videos they are helpful. I have a question though, I know it may seem like a n00b question but why does a pin that has already been set, come unset? like what is mechanically occurring that makes the set pin drop down again?
If the tension is released the driver pin can drop back down - the core rotates back a little so the holes line up again and the spring pushes both pins down, maybe loose or maybe with the driver pin still bound. Alternatively if a set pin is pushed up further with enough force the key pin causes the rotation again, forcing its way through too high and bound in place. The way to avoid it is to just be precise and careful, and practice that moment of setting, instead of pressing harder, try and keep constant pressure and position and release the tension instead.
I have been having great success on my locks by raking with a hook. Now I have to buy new locks because mine are too easy for someone to break in. And the key pad locks for homes unpick able? Also I had a hard time in the beginning because I was using way too much tension. Folks, you should not make an indent in your finger. Light, light pressure.
How much effort would be to pick a star lock, or maybe have another name. A four sided lock. The key has 4 blades to each direction, UP, Down, Left and Right. In those videos i only saw locks that uses a key 1 blade. Also there are the car keys which has 2 blades(UP and Down) Note each blade has its own different code from each other. How about those?

I viewed a LOT of PICKING vids- this was the BEST for me as a newbie.
I subscribed- Thanks.

Picked my first lock after watching this video. Fun!

These vids are giving me creepy ads of parents spying on babysitters.
This video, as well as the previous two, should be viewed before episodes 8-11.

Awesome!!
think of which way you would turn a key and pay attention to which way the bottom of the key would be turning

How would I know that if I couldn't tell the action of the cylinder or what pick I should use? Does the brand name give you a clue!
Hi I really love the videos, very informative but I was wondering, how did you take apart that lock and leave it so that nothing fell out? Thanks!
The lock is only half cut. There is enough metal casing left so that everything is still working as intended. Look at it again, it's like cutouts have been made.

I haven't, but I'm about to try. Tell you how it goes
Qwerty ASDF Thanks, will be interesting to see how you get on. I might have a go sometime when i buy some pick hooks
Great vid
you can turn the lock down that the pins may fall and make free area to pass the hook
A ping sticking on top in its right ("open") position.

@SenorAplin
not sure but it would depent on the size of your screen pixels and if he scaled it to the resolution of the youtube player

where did you get the cut away lock?
Help.. Plz. How do you know which pin your at? Does it matter?

When I use a tension wrench, how do I know which way to put pressure?
Same way you would open it with a key

oh and also: how do you avoid having that happen? so you dont make the pins become unset?
If the tension is released the driver pin can drop back down - the core rotates back a little so the holes line up again and the spring pushes both pins down, maybe loose or maybe with the driver pin still bound. Is the binding pin lock specific or different every time.
sounds like a false set
you may have some security pins
he customized th lock of their hous lol

Yah me too! Love rakes. Which do you Mainly use?

Short hook, standard hook, medium hook, - for real, it seem like it depends on who your are asking, as to which hook will get which name.
