    In retirement, I’ve adopted the “zero drop, wide toe box” philosophy. I’m approaching three years into a complete transition to ZD shoes. The “five finger” approach I’ve adopted for backpacking, in socks only….I really like Injini socks. Shoes? Not so much….but, watching your light-hearted video, is making me rethink that! Bravo-Zulu, amigo…great video….well done!

    I was forced to go on a 6 mile hike in my VFF when I forgot my boots. It was over all types of terrain: dirt, concrete, sand, rocks, forest litter. My felt amazing afterwards; not tired at all. It took some getting use to, just becoming aware of your foot feetplacement

    Yes to the toe arguments. I started my minimalist shoe journey with VFFs in 2006, and after trying various brands and styles, I recently completely came back to FiveFingers. The plus in freedom and feel is just so fun and rewarding.
    Personally, I try to avoid laces, and always looking for the most minimal offerings. Therefore my favorite pairs of all time are EL-X for sports, and CVT LB for everything else. Successfully ignoring that winter is coming. I seriously wish Vibram would release a true winter FF, withstanding cold, snow and water.
    Great and charming video! Cheers!

      Never thought of that, but yea, slip-ins would definitely speed up the toe shoe putting-on process. Have some slip-ins from Vivo, and they're great. Ditto on winter. Winter-proof Vibram's would be the ultimate holiday present. Sigh...

    Bodyworker here with a PSA. Please remember to use a transition period when switching to a barefoot shoe. You wouldn't start a new gym routine of multiple 100 lb. dead lifts on day one. Don't expect your underdeveloped foot muscles to support more weight than that 24/7, without working up to it over a few weeks or more 👍. Have a good journey.

    I too have the same shoe, it's a great shoe and I agree with everything you said here. Although mine seems to have some kind of extra cushioning for the arch. The bottom reads "arch protection" or something to that effect, it's just a bit thicker at that point and it can prevent a badly placed rock or root from doing damage.
    The video reminded me of the "slush problem", I wish it weren't a thing. The feeling of the shoes sucking in cold water is so annoying I chose to get another model and now I use both depending on the day and weather.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndrewFolts I currently have the Merrell Move Glove as my second shoe. It's not got the same amount of feel as the v-trek but being a more conventional shoe it's more resistant to water.

    Thanks for this review. Your review is one of the reasons I ended up trying the V Trek and now they are my go-to shoe. The only time I don’t wear them is when I need a safety toe or a dress shoe.
    To address the water absorption: I found that a layer of beeswax based leather protectant can help it be more water resistant. Still not waterproof by any means, but it’ll help with a brief splash. Just don’t go too heavy or it ruins the breathability of the mesh.

    I think a better way to look at this would be that barefoot shoes allow your feet to develop sufficient strength, usually takes around a year to two at this point you should transition to five finger shoes which is as close to barefoot as you can get. Once you wear five finger shoes you will notice just how much softly you walk and how clunky barefoot shoes are.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At first I thought the separate toes were a gimmick, but even compared to my Wildlings, which are .5mm thinner, the Vibram's just feel better. We have separate toes for a reason, I guess. (:

    I think I'm sold and I haven't even finished watching. Thank you. Been increasingly aware of the need for even greater toe freedom since I first went to barefoot shoes. Even my wide Softstar Sawyers, probably the widest shoes in the world, could do with at least a couple more millimetres.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, I heard Softars were nice and roomy. Can't beat the separate toes, tho. My feet are narrow from soccer shoes, and they stretch my toes out a bit, which feels great.

    • @JohnMoseley
      @JohnMoseley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndrewFolts I have a little theory that a lot of people need more width and toe stretching than they realise even when they go barefoot. It would take some work to prove this, but here's my logic so far: despite my wide caveman feet, as someone puts it elsewhere here, I wore regular sneakers for decades without realising they were way too narrow for me. I only switched when I started getting chronic pain and the doctor offered no help. Then I did a little mindfulness excercise about my feet, finally noticed they were being pinched by my Pumas, and went and bought my first barefoot shoes, a pair of Vivos. It took care of the pain, but there was still some discomfort because they still weren't wide enough to let my toes splay.
      The point is, as I say, I'd worn Adidas, Puma and New Balance forever without noticing the constriction. If I'd switched before I started getting pain, all I would have noticed was how wonderfully roomy the Vivos were by comparison - without even realising that I still needed more space to let my poor constricted feet really spread out and for the toes to become strong and active in my walking and running.
      The Softstars have really been great in helping me understand this. Before them, I was focused on getting more space for my little toes, and thought shoes were fine as long as my big toes weren't forced inwards. The wide Softstars go further, allowing the big toes to really splay away from the other toes and follow the line of the metatarsals - at least on a wide, fan-shaped foot like mine.
      I know I'm going on a bit, but I'm sort of obsessed because this big toe splay capacity seems to have finally corrected my gait, getting rid of knee pain, hip twinges and lower back soreness, and making the whole business of walking such a pleasure.

      @@JohnMoseley I reckon your theory is totally spot on. No one realised how much their feet are squished in normal shoes & they think their (now) deformed feet is how they’re supposed to be.
      I too have wide feet and I try to wear my VVF every time possible when I have to wear shoes except for occasions out to a bar or pub etc, which is when I’ll wear my one of my vivo’s which are foot shaped but still only”just” wide enough, but miles better than a standard shoe.

    I love my V-treks, had them for over a year. My one problem was that my big toes went through the side of the fabric (made holes between my big and second toes on both sides), this happened when they were only 6 weeks old. I used shoe goo to repair the holes, and other than having to do this a couple of times (when the old goo came away), they've been great. I'm keen to get another pair, but at £90, I really want something I don't have to repair or modify so that they last. Have you had, or heard of this issue?

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In five years I've never had any tearing, other than when a thorn snagged the top. Might have to do with your foot shape and/or toe splay. Sometimes toenails can poke through fabric as well.

    • @chrismcdowall5134
      @chrismcdowall5134 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had the same issue with lots of vibram trail running shoes. Mud and grit would get between the toes and knacker the fabric. Fast downhill running might also have been a factor. But the newer vibram v-trail 2 shoes have a rubbery skin around the two big toes on each shoe - this has completely solved the problem. For me the main issue now is the durability of the soles - especially for running on gravel. The sole will wear through under the outside edge of my feet, just down from the small toe, after 7-9 months. This is where I tend to land on my forefoot when running fast downhill, so there is a lot of abrasion going on. Would be great to have a little kevlar plate or something there to soak up some of the damage

    Hello Andrew,
    Very informative video as always. If you were to choose between these and primus which would would you pick? Also, do you rotate shoes on daily basis - one day vibrams and next day vivo's or stick to one pair for the season? I have couple of Vivo's and always wondered if it would be good to rotate. Thank you once again for the video.

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Formerly I would have said Primus for roads, because they used to be thinner (3mm), but now both shoes are 4mm, so the Primus has no advantage over Vibram's. That said, for trails I'd use the V-Trek, for roads I'd use a KSO, and if you want one shoe for both, then go with the V-Trek.

    I never tried vibram but the other day i had a client (im a PT) put some vibram train 2.0 and even though i find that model too bulky i got curious. I've been investigating my options since i would use it for walking / training only . What i know is that the first thing i do when i get home is to take my shoes off, sometimes i train barefoot and when at work i use birkenstock in summer days .
    I dont fit at all with the hiking/ running population but i am also one of those that like to have their shoes as flat as possible , my walking shoes have been classic chucks for years :) (i got some new chucks and got mad because they increased the cushion, they are hot and i dont enjoy walking on marshmellow)
    I am going to buy second hand the trek anscent, you convinced me ! Can i say that the fact that this model is quite cool / nice too look at has also contribuited ?

    Hopefully you can help, but I’m stuck in between getting either the v trek or the v trail 2.0. I’ll be going to Austin to hike, trail and walk through/get in water, I hear different things between the two. Like v trail 2.0 is better for water because it still hugs your feet once u get out

    • @AndrewFolts
      @AndrewFolts  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The V-Trail is thicker at 5.7mm (including 2mm cushion) with a more aggressive tread for mud and a synthetic upper, while the V-Trek is thinner with a better tread for rocks and a 50% wool upper. Personally I don't like synthetic uppers, because they have poor breathability and get very smelly. The V-Trek's always felt very snug on me, even soaking wet, so I'd say go with what tread you need most (mud vs rock).

Would two shoes work slightly better? Probably. But I love the V-Trek's so much I've never bothered with any of their others. The material's so light the higher top doesn't bother me at all. Would be pretty difficult to waterproof them because of the separate toes, but you could give a try with some spray.

    What most if not all sites do not mention in actual measurements is how wide they can accommodate. I am 4 1/4 inches wide at the ball of the foot and the middle edge of the ball of the foot (big toe) needs to be at the 7 inch mark from the heal relative to a 9.5 inch foot length, most foot ware if not all are about 1/2 inch to high . In addition the shoe needs laces to accommodate foot volume. Marketing terms identifying how wide they are, are meaningless. A lot of interesting shoes on the market, but I have yet to see anything on the market that fits properly. I like the idea of a straight up cut on the inside of the foot with a downward arc shape covering the rest of the toes. One more thing, what I have noticed are 2 types of toe length.......long and short. Mine are short, therefore an other measurement that needs to be taken into consideration when looking at five finger type shoes. I tried some previous 5 fingers and they were nothing but annoying by rubbing and being uncomfortable between the toes.

      Agreed, a lot of brands don't even say how thick they are. I mean...come one, that should be #! for a barefoot brand. My big toes are not cramped but don't feel super comfortable either.
