VLOG 016 - Old school cool! 1984 PA46 Piper Malibu Extensive paint restoration and ceramic coating

  • I first saw this Piper Malibu out in Minneapolis as it was getting some work done, I knew right away that this plane had so much gloss potential. I met the owner later on at the MMOPA convention in Colorado Springs, and I finally made it out to Atlanta to restore the original factory paint, getting it to look better than new!
A quick but aggressive knockdown step removes major oxidation, with a finer finishing step maximizing gloss prior to ceramic coating.

Why not just cut the oxidation with a regular rotary 2in pile pad with some presta ultra polish the go to your foam on the orbital. Just seems like you are making more work for yourself than necessary.

There are many ways to do this, it's best to stick to whatever system you are most comfortable with.

Is there any performance improvement with the ceramic coating?

Awesome job. The owner must be proud of your work and his bird.

Wow! I’m impressed! Any interest in sharing some of your experiences and techniques with a fellow pilot! I’m considering getting into the business. I don’t think I will ever be competition for you since I’m on the west coast. Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated! I would even be willing to fly out and assist you with one of your projects pro bono! Keep up the great work! Looking forward to hearing from you!

We have a 3 - 4 day training course, but it really is more so aimed at someone who is looking to do this professionally. Aircraft detailing insurance (Hangar keepers insurance) is required and not cheap to casually add for a hobbyist. We may hold some owner detailing seminars in the future though if there is a demand for it.

Wow! What a difference! The original owner flew out of Madison, WI (KMSN) and owned a string of hotels, Exel Inn (hence the XL in the tail number). I think the color scheme may have mimicked the hotel brand.

I have some videos on that, but generally its messy and time consuming. Look up PBS boot prep and sealant

Who supplied the propane tank, heater and flood lights? Do you rent these in the area then return or borrow if available?
    Very nice and informative video's.

Owner supplied. For onsite jobs we need a few specific items like ladders, creepers, etc.

How often to you wear ear protection when polishing? I have found I can't polish without it now, the pitch of the buffer is just awful to me and I imagine awful for my hearing.
