The silver two cylinder Yamato outboards pull start with a rope, the rope does not rewind back into the motor. The loud 4 cylinder Mercury outboards, some teams have a battery powered starter motor that they place on top of the flywheel and then detach once it's running.
God I miss doing this. Used to race boats in Texas back in the early 80s ran B1 hydro and B1 runabout. 25 horse Johnson on a Mercury lower unit
