Reel mowers give a very clean cut on the grass blades and outperform rotary mowers when it comes to close, short cutting.
Rotary mowers mulch tall grass with ease and reduce the frequency of mowing needed.
Me personally, I use both a gas push mower and a manual reel mower. Sometimes I like to see the grass flinging and mow often, but most of the time I go with the Honda HRX217 on my Kentucky Bluegrass!

I’m looking at the California reel with the Honda motor @ HD for $1200.
Any idea if reel’s can go up a 15 degree hill? Are they only for flat & level?
I am getting the Sun Joe 20-in Reel Lawn Mower for 102 dollars on home depot. I can't wait to use it when it gets here on the 24th or 25th.

Growing up I had a neighbor who mowed his lawn religiously with a gas powered reel mower. I offered once as a kid to mow his lawn with a rotary for 10 bucks he gave me 15 to use his mower 🤣 I haven't been right ever since such a beautiful cut I swear

I'm old school, I was taught by many older guys you don't do a straight run with a reel mower, it's a back and forth motion so it really mows the same patch twice.
Interesting. I've got a gas powered reel now and it does much better, I need to re-do the video and compare gas rotary to gas reel.

Not to mention that rotary mower blades are a heck of a lot easier to sharpen!

The one and only blade on a reel mower is not hard to sharpen at all. Actually keeping it clean will provide a nice cut for a very long time

@grassdaddy i found a way to sharpen manual reel mowers .. you get some oil then apply it the the bed knife (cutting blade) not the reel then push it back and forward a few times it gets sharper

it even works on nicked bed knifes and chipped ones

Nice video. Enjoyed it as always. Us 'Lawnporn' lawnies in Australia really love petrol engine cylinder 'reel' mowers, the most popular being the locally made Scott Bonnar which unfortunately is not in production any more.
Most still use a rotary mower but not too many striping kits, they really haven't caught on here in Australia.

I stick with rotary, as the matter of fact one of my mowers is honda hrx217vka and it does a great job , i want to get a 28" or 30" self propelled and researching now.
The real mower is great too but i have too many properties to just use that.

Mikes Lawn Care haha yeah that is probable. if its a small area you could dig it up and replace the soil.. larger you could try tilling it but might just need to wait it out
I use the reel mower for the front yard and rotary for the back.
My front yard is the face of my house, it should look beautiful. I mow it every other day as it's relatively small.
The best advice I've had with reel mowers is to take it slow. Don't try to cut fast. Just walk at a leisurely pace.

Fiskars has a reel mower that goes up to 4 inches I've been considering. I absolutely love my Honda 216 so it would be a impulse buy
The thing is even at 2 in the Swardman struggles because it doesn't have the suction to pull the grass up for an even cut.
I own a Fiskars reel. Have had it for almost three years now. LOVE IT!! Gave up on rotary cutting years ago and been through a few makes and model. Was real happy with my previous mower but it was to small. We moved to a much bigger yard to cut and the Fiskars was the right price
I like the idea of the exercise you get with the manual reel mower but I’m guessing the gas powered reel mower blade revolutions are much higher/faster and you’ll get even cleaner cuts?

With a reel mower you should mow twice as often as a rotary. But that's twice the workout and you don't have to put up with the sounds of a gas mower. Also, you have a pretty low end reel mower and you are comparing it to a mid level rotary. What did you expect?

I have about a 15 ft front yard, no back yard with Kentucky Blue grass and weeds. If I deweed with some roundup ( city won t let me black tarp) would a weed eater setup to prepare a reel mower usage if it keep it up? The work isn't hard, but I crave short Kentucky blue
Get a good reel like a fiskars. It self sharpens, pushes easy, and can be adjusted to a tall setting. Definitely get a clipping catcher though

You can get very good stripes with a rotary mower, it just needs sharp blades and a metal roller, the brands we swear by are Honda (who sell their top end mowers with a metal roller) or a silver Hayter.

Grass Daddy shame, seeing as Hayter are owned by Toro, believe they are american, old ones have B&S engines, new ones are being rolled out with Honda engines. Here's a link so you can see the machine, can cut all manner of lawn types and manages to polish up even the most rubbish of lawns!

The only problem with the reel mower cannot cut tall grasses or twigs.
The Scott's can cut up to 3". Why not just low frequently on Kentucky blue grass?
The Scott's doesn't have suction, so I find at 3in it just doesn't cut right.
Kentucky Bluegrass reccomended height is 2.5 to 4.5
your demo was hilarious but i use a reel mower for everything cause it isnt noisy dangerous around animals (and toddlers) or use expensive gas.. nothing to start no plugs etc.. its fine use the real. if i have REALLY high stuff i just weedeat first with an electric.. and yeh i own a rake.

I know a professional knife thrower and I'd say he can throw a knife and cut paper just as well as with scissor. I'd think a professional landscaper can do the same
Have you ever cut a new lawn with a rotary mower first, and then went back and mowed it for a real clean cut with a reel mower? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
If by new lawn you mean newly seeded then the benefit of reel is the cleaner cut and lower cut. You could start to cut at 1-2in and encourage growth earlier.

Rotary is much better. The biggest pitfall of reel mower is scissor cutting action. It will leave many uncut grasses sticking out behind the track. I have two reel mowers reclaimed from junkyard. I use fine file to sharpen the reel blades and move away (or remove it if possible) that redundant bottom fixed blade from reel blades to prevent jamming by twigs. The reel can now rotate at faster speed and cut grass with speed (like weed whacker) instead of scissor cutting action. I have half a dozen of hedge trimmers. They are big scissors, right? But none of them would cut grass. For scissor cutting action, the tool must have the precision and the sharpness of edges. The non-contact type of reel mowers work much better. The blade edges can be horned with fine stone and open the reel blade/bottom blade gap to 2mm. To maintain the sharpness of cutting edges, the blades should be made of alloy steel hardened to RC60.
Well that defeats the purpose of the reel ;-) but the key point here is all the twigs etc. If you have any trees, reel can get jammed up.
